남양주 흥국사 萬歲樓房 연구 (The Study on the Manserubang of Heungguksa(temple) in Namyangju(province))

초록

경기도 남양주 흥국사의 만세루방은 그동안 특별한 명칭 없이 ‘대방’으로 불리면서 염불당혹은 왕실여인의 기도처로 창건되었다고 여져겨 왔다. 그러나 1830년 누자리에 들어서면서 ‘만세루방’으로 창건되었다는 사실과, 당시 대리청정하던 효명세자의 허락과 지원으로 창건되었다는 사실, 최근 공연예술학계의 연구성과 등으로써 만세루방의 창건 당시 기능과 그 의미를 새롭게 추론할 수 있게 되었다.
흥국사는 조선후기 왕조의 중흥조 덕흥대원군의 墓寺로 중창된 사찰인데 1830년, 덕흥대원군 탄생 3백주년을 맞이하여 기념행사를 치르고자 하였다. 때마침 능행과 연향으로 왕실의귄위를 회복하고자 하는 효명세자가 대리청정을 하면서 의례전용 공간인 연경당을 창건한 상태였다. 이에 흥국사에서는 대규모 야외법회(의식)을 계획하고 이를 위한 공간으로써 만세루방을 창건하였던 것이다. 이러한 정황은 <흥국사감로왕도>의 만세루전각과 참관하는 이들의 모습을 통해 추론할 수 있다. 만세루방은 이때 1828년의 연경당 처럼 ┏┓자형 평면으로 지어진것이다.
만세루방은 이후 소실되어 1878년 7칸이 증축되면서 현재처럼 H자형 건물이 되었다. 그결과 ┏┓자형이 전후대칭을 이뤄, 앞뒤마당에서 각기 재를 올릴 수 있었던 것 같다. 건축요소를 살펴보면 방·내루·6칸의 통칸·퇴칸 등의 공간 구성과 이익공·화반·운공의 결구가 19세기 후반이후 조성된 궁궐침전과 매우 유사하다. 따라서 구체적인 기록은 없지만 만세루방은왕실에서 금전뿐만 아니라 장인과 재목을 지원하고 건축형식도 허가해 주었던 것으로 볼 수 있다.
한편, 만세루방이 염불당으로 쓰이게 된 것은 1940년 만일회 결성 때이다. 서울경기지역에서 만일회가 20세기 들어 성행하자 흥국사에서도 개최하고 싶었으나 재정적인 문제로 실행하지 못하다가 주지 박범화화상이 자신의 재산을 희사하면서 결성된 것이다. 이로써 대한제국멸망이후 뚜렷한 용도로 쓰이지 못했던 만세루방이 염불당으로 활용되었음을 알게 되었다.
따라서 흥국사만세루방은 19세기 조선왕실과 불교의 관계를 입증하는 사례로 재평가되어야 한다고 생각한다

영어초록

Heungguksa(temple) located in Namyangju of Kyeongki province was rebuilt as Shrine of Deokheungdaewongun's grave in the latter period of Joseon Dynasty(the restoration of the Royal House). This temple has been existing with the constant support of the Royal Family by the Korea empire period. The Royal House of the latter period of Joseon Dynasty built a temple near the grave of the Royal family's people who couldn't be enshrined in the Royal Ancestor's shrine and The Royal House took care of and supported the temple. The Royal family had the priests of these temples concentrate all their energies on looking after the grave as they not only supported the temple but also exempted the monks from labor.
Namyangju(province) Heungguksa(temple) is the representation of these kinds of temples, as it turned out, the records and remains of the Royal family's supports to these temples have been confirmed from Seonjo period to Gojong period. For instance the Buddhist paintings in Heungguksa temple are representative. However, we can only guess the construction of the Buddhist sanctum through the records because we couldn't concretely confirm the supports of the Royal family. However, It is worthy of notice that only the construction style of Heungguksa(temple) Manserubang is very similar to the house containing the king's bedchamber of the Royal palace. Though there were no any records that The Royal House supported wood or dispatched artisans, we could infer that the Royal House supported money and helped the material, human aids.
On the other hand the use of Manserubang was built as the house for prayer to Buddha and the prayer house for the Royal family's women for the first time. However If we think that there is the record that Manilyeombulhoe was established in Heungguksa(temple) in 1940 and there was Gongwonso was similar to Gyujeongso which controled temples in Joseon Dynasty in Heungguksa(temple) in 1792, These opinions could be improper.
Moreover the function of Manserubang was different from the common Daebang in the Capital Area if we look at that there were a lot of similar respects in the king's bedchamber in the moulding of construction and in the buildings of the government offices which set up since the latter of 19 century.
Besides most Manilyeombulhoe in the temples of the Capital area were organized in 20century,Manilyeombulhoe in Heungguksa(temple) was carried out in 1940 for the first time because of space, financial and geographical problems.
In conclusion, If we consider the history of Heungguksa(temple) and the construction form of Manserubang, It is clear that Manserubang was built as the symbol of the temple which the Royal Family support and as the form of the authoritative constructions such as royal palace, government offices. Therefore this construction(the Manserubang of Heungguksa(temple)) was not built for Manilyeombulhoe and should be revaluated as the valuable case which prove the connection between the Royal House of Joseon Dynasty and the temples in 19C.
