조선시대 궁중의례용 쌍용도상의 유형과 함의: 일승일강용一升一降龍 도상을 중심으로 (The Patterns and Meanings of Double Dragons Icons in the Royal Court Rituals of Joseon Dynasty: Focus on the Icons of Double Dragons Ascending and Descending)

초록

중국 고대부터 용은 여러 가지 구도로 표현되었으나 그 중에서도 쌍룡이 일승일강一升一降하거나 혹은 모두 승천하는 도상은 의례적인 성격이 짙은 기물과 회화에 반복 시문된다. 중국 고대부터 두 마리의 용이 오르고 내리는 도상은 천자의 깃발에, 승룡은 곤룡포에 시문한다는 기록을 바탕으로 두 도상은 특히 존숭되었다.
일승일강하는 쌍용의 도상은 당대唐代 동경에서 많이 보이기 시작하며 송과 금대에도 지속적으로 제작된다. 한편 송대의 기록에는 가장 의례적인 복식인 곤면복에 두 마리 승룡의 도상과 일승일강룡 도상이 혼용되고 있어 일승일강룡 도상의 사용이 확산되고 있음을 짐작할 수 있다. 명·청대에는 오르고 내리는 두 마리의 용 사이에 여의주가 삽입된 이룡희주二龍戱珠 도상이 유행하며 오채화룡문대반五彩花龍紋大盤, 금분金盆, 병풍 등 동경 이외에 황제의 여러 기물 장식 및 회화로도 묘사되었다. 이룡희주의 도상은 일승일강룡 도상과 깊은 양식적 유사성을 지니고 있으며, 모두 궁중유물 특히 제왕과 연관된 기물에 시문되는 공통점을 지닌다.
유교적 의례가 정치의 중심을 이루던 조선시대에는 이러한 세 도상이 교명敎命, 보록寶錄, 교룡기蛟龍旗, 어좌의 보개寶蓋, 쌍룡선, 탁자 등 왕이 사용하는 기물에 시문되며 왕의 위의를 상징했다. 특히 이룡희주의 도상은 경복궁 사정전의 벽화인 운룡도로도 그려져 문양이 회화화되는 극명한 예를 보여준다.
한편 대한제국은 지금까지의 중국과의 외교관계에서 벗어나 황제국으로의 쇄신을 이루며 모든 장식과 복식에서 새로운 황실의 이미지를 성립하고자 노력한다. 이러한 작업의 일환으로 고종(1863-1907 재위)은 십이류면 십이장복을 착용하였고 폐슬의 문양 또한 산 위로 화염에 싸인 여의주와 승·강룡을 시문했다. 이는 「명당위明堂位」에 제시된 폐슬의 문양을 형상화 한 『대명회전大明會典』을 따른 것으로 조선시대와는 구분되는 격상된 모습을 보여준다. 면복과 보록에는 두 마리의 승룡이, 교명, 정전의 천정 등 왕과 관련된 의례적인 기물과 장소에는 일승일강용과 이룡희주의 도상이 선택되어 조선의 전통을 잇고 있다. 창덕궁 신선원전 당가 천판, 황궁우皇穹宇의 천장, 덕수궁의 정전인 중화전 천장 중앙에 마련된 부당가 안에는 황룡으로 채색된 이룡희주상이 장식되어 건물 천장의 중심에서 새로운 황제국의 면모를 직접적으로 시각화한다. 이러한 도상은 황룡기에도 나타난다. 황제의 거동때 세웠던 황룡기는 이화여대 박물관에서 소장하고 있는 <대한제국 동가도>에서도 확인할 수 있다.
이렇듯 조선에서 대한제국까지 세 가지 쌍룡의 도상은 의례적인 기물과 회화에서 왕의 위의를 드러내는 특징적 도상으로 사용되었다. 특히 일승일강의 구도를 중심으로 하는 이룡희주식 표현은 승룡상에 비해 여러 의례적 기물에 사용되고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 이들은 여러 의례적 기물에 공통적으로 사용되며, 각각 다른 제재로 만들어졌으나 같은 메시지를 전달하고 있다. 이는 단순히 대상을 장식하는 단계를 넘어, 감상자가 고정된 이미지를 통해 그 함의를 인식하도록 기능한다. 즉 예적 질서를 상징적 도상으로 끊임없이 주지시키는 것이다.

영어초록

The dragons were composed in many different illustrations since ancient China. The icons of double dragons ascending and descending, or ascending together had inscribed repeatedly in the ritual objects and paintings. The records showed that the icons of double dragons ascending and descending together were inscribed in the Emperor’s flag, and the ascending double dragons on the ritual costumes. These two icons were especially adored.
The icons of double dragons ascending and descending were found to appear since Dang Dynasty, and they were continually appeared in the Song and Jin Dynasty. In the written records of Song Dynasty, the double dragons ascending only, and ascending and descending together were mingled together in the ritual costumes. Therefore, it is inferred that usages of icons of double dragons ascending and descending were widely spread. In the Ming and Ch’ing Dynasty, the double dragons with magic stones were popular and inscribed on the various decorations of utensils and paintings of Emperor. The icons of double dragons with magic stones and double dragons ascending and descending had very close similarities in mode. They were inscribed in the ritual objects, especially associated with Emperor.
In Joseon Dynasty when the Confucius rituals were a center of politics, these three icons were inscribed in the king’s decree, wrapping cloth of king’s seal, king’s flag, ceiling of king’s chair, etc… and the objects used by king to illustrate the magnificence of king. Especially, the icons of double dragons with magic stones were painted in the king’s office of Gyeongbokgung Palace which represented as a vivid example that the pattern became a painting. Otherwise, the Korea Empire strived to break away from the previous influences from China and wanted declare itself as an independent empire. It had altered all ornaments and costumes in order to establish a new image of empire. The Emperor Go-jong (1863-1907) wore the ritual robe with twelve pattern icons and the knee covering cloth decorated with pattern of double dragons ascending and descending with magic stones in the flame over the mountain. It was illustrated to express an upgrade from Joseon Dynasty. The double dragons ascending together were inscribed in the ritual robes and wrapping cloth of king’s seal. The icons of double dragons ascending and descending, and the double dragons with magic stones were inscribed in the king’s decree, ritual objects and places associated with king to continue the tradition of Joseon Dynasty. The ceilings of numerous royal palaces were decorated with golden double dragons with magic stones in order to illustrate new aspects of empire.
As explained above, the three types of distinguished icons which were used in the ritual objects and paintings from Joseon Dynasty to Korea Empire were to emphasize the magnificence of king. Especially, it is discovered that the illustrations of icons of double dragons with magic stones ascending and descending were inscribed in more ritual objects than the icons of double dragons ascending together. It means that icons were more than decorations of objects. The observers were recognized the meanings of ritual orders through the symbolic icons.
