일제강점기 재난 극복의 메타포: 蔡龍臣의 《三國志演義圖》 (Metaphor of Weathering Catastrophe during the Period of Japanese Occupation: The Illustrations of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Chae Yongsin (1850-1941))

초록

삼국지연의도는 조선시대 관우 신앙과 『삼국지연의』의 유행 속에서 애호되었고 조선 말기에도 지속적으로 제작되었다. 관우 신앙이 왕실과 민간에서 모두 호응을 얻게 되어 삼국지연의도는 궁중 양식과 민화 양식의 양갈래로 제작된다. 이러한 흐름 속에서 채용신의 삼국지연의도는 독특한 위치를 점한다. 채용신은 도화서 화원은 아니었지만 도화서 폐지 후 어진을 포함한 궁중 소용의 회화의 주문에 수응하였던 것으로 보아 이 작품도 왕실의 주문으로 제작되었을 것이다.
채용신의 《삼국지연의도》는 지역 관왕묘에 걸렸던 것으로 추정되지만, 내용은 궁중 장식병풍 형식의 삼국지연의도와 공유 비율이 높은 것이 확인되었다. 그리고 현전하는 삼국지연의도를 기준으로 볼 때 여타 삼국지연의도에서 확인되지 않는 관우 관련 에피소드가 다수 그려졌다.
그리고 양식적 측면에서, 궁중 장식용 병풍 형식의 삼국지연의도인 국립고궁박물관본과 서울 지역 관왕묘 소용 액자형식의 서울역사박물관본, 국립민속박물관본은 같은 양식과 내용으로 그려졌고, 비슷한 장면 구성과 채색이 도식화가 진행되었다. 그러나 채용신은 삼국지연의도에 그의 개성적 화풍으로 독창적인 양식과 구성을 창안해내었다.
채용신은 일제강점기 국가적 위기가 극에 달하였던 상황에서 관왕묘에 장식되는 그림 속에 충절, 군신, 조선의 군주의 상징인 관우를 부각시키기 위해 삼국지연의도에 남다른 의미를 부여하였던 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Guan Yu cults have prevailed throughout the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), bringing pictorial illustrations of the novel a great deal of popularity that has persisted until the late Joseon period. As the hero of the novel Guan Yu was deified and worshipped both in the royal court and by common people, the illustrations of the Romance saw a stylistic division into court and folk painting styles. In the course of its development, the Illustrations of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Chae Yongsin occupies a unique position: Chae was not a member of the Royal Academy of Painting, but he has worked for commissions from the court—King’s portraits, for example—even after the dissolution of the institution (1896). His close relationship with the royal court increases the likelihood that this painting was produced at the request of the court.
Presumably the Illustrations by Chae were housed in a local shrine dedicated to Guan Yu, known as Temple of King Guan; and yet its pictorial contents have much in common with those shared by a group of Illustrations of the Romance in folding-screen format made for the royal court. It is also notable that Chae’s Illustrations include a bundle of Guan-involved episodes that do not appear in other extant examples.
The Illustrations disclose Chae’s individual style, distinctive mode, and peculiar composition. The painter’s creativity becomes apparent when his work is compared to other surviving illustrations of the Romance that show the recurrence of the same style and contents, similar scene organization, and formulaic color schemes. The conventionalization is observable from a court decorative folding screen (now in the National Palace Museum of Korea) and two works made for certain temples of King Guan in Seoul (framed and housed in the Seoul Museum of History and the National Folk Museum of Korea).
Chae Yongsin imbued the illustrations of the Romance with another layer of significance. He seems to have aimed to highlight the symbolic role of Guan Yu as a manifestation of loyalty, the exemplary relationship of sovereign and subject, and even the monarch of Joseon, while producing the paining for a local temple at a time when the national crisis reached its catastrophic apogee over the period of Japanese Occupation.
