방정환의 번역 양상과 내러티브 변형의 특징--「산드룡의 유리 구두」를 중심으로- (Bang Junghwan’s Translation Patterns and Characteristics of Narrative Modification--Focused on “Sandryong yuligudu”(산드룡의 유리구두)-)

초록

이 글의 목적은 방정환이 번역한 「산드룡의 유리 구두」를 통해 그의 번역 양상과 내 러티브 변형의 특징을 분석하는 것이다. 이 작품에 관해서 많은 논자는 방정환의 번역 양상을 일본어판의 중역이라는 범주 안에서 논하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 방정환의 「산 드룡의 유리 구두」 번역이 먼저 그가 일본 동경 유학 시절에 경험한 엄청난 독서 체험 의 결과라는 점에 주목하였다. 또한 본 연구는 2000년대 초 방정환의 중본 발굴로 인해* 경희대 박사과정 수료, [e-mail].66 8호방정환의 번역이 일본 아동문학으로부터 영향을 받았다는 기존의 ‘이식론의 관점’에 의 문이 제기되기 시작한 점에 주목했다. 이러한 배경 하에 방정환의 번역양상을 독자적인 관점에서 「산드룡의 유리 구두」에 나타난 방정환의 번역 양상과 내러티브 변형의 특징 을 고찰해볼 필요가 있다.
본 연구는 페로 원본인 「상드리옹 혹은 작은 유리구두」와 방정환이 번역한 「산드룡 의 유리 구두」의 서사 구조를 분석한 결과 도입부와 결론 그리고 이야기 말미의 교훈 부분에서 큰 차이를 보인다는 점을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 도입부와 결말부를 중 심으로 방정환이 원본에 대한 의도적 변형을 통해 어떠한 메시지를 전달하고자 했는지를 분석하였다. 특히, 본 연구는 방정환이 도입부 변형을 통해 어머니를 잃은 산드룡과 조국 을 잃은 조선인의 공감대를 형성하고자 하였고, 결말부 변형을 통해 암울한 조국의 현실 을 타파하여 새 시대를 열 새 일꾼 어린이상을 제시하고자 하였다는 점에 주목하였다.
분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 방정환은 식민지 조선의 아픈 현실을 겪고 있는 어린 아이를 포함한 조선 백성들에게 위안을 주고 많은 공감을 불러일으키기 위해 페로 버전 의 「산드리옹 혹은 작은 유리구두」에 주목했다. 방정환의 번역본은 식민지 조선 백성들 에게 타자의 고통을 인식하고 연대의식을 형성하는 데 적합한 작품이었다. 둘째, 방정환 은 불쌍한 산드룡의 감정을 고조시키기 위해, 페로의 원작보다 ‘울음’을 다섯 번이나 더 묘사했다. 또 그는 「산드룡의 유리 구두」를 통해 ‘지상천국건설’을 주도할 ‘새 세상의 새 일꾼’이라는 어린이상을 제시하고자 했다. 마지막으로, 방정환 번역은 일제 강점기라 는 제한된 문화 환경에서 ‘같이 울어 주는 문학’으로서의 독특한 글쓰기 지평을 보여주 었다. 종합적으로, 본 연구는 「산드룡의 유리 구두」가 페로 원작의 한계를 뛰어넘으려는 방정환의 강한 주체적 의지, 즉 ‘민족의 계몽과 해방’의지를 주도적으로 투영한 작품임 을 밝힐 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate Bang Junghwan’s translation patterns and the characteristics of narrative modification, focusing on 「 Sandryong yuligudu」(산드룡의 유리구두). This translated version has been discussed in the sense that his translation is a relay translation of the Japanese version. Therefore, this study focused on the fact that Bang Junghwan’s translation of 「Sandryong yuligudu」 was the result of the his extensive reading experience in Tokyo. In addition, this study paid attention to the fact that, due to the discovery of Bang Junghwan’s relay translated version in the early 2000s, the ‘transplant theory’ that Bang’s translation was influenced by Japanese children’s literature began to be questioned. Hence, It is essential to examine Bang Junghwan’s translation pattern and the characteristics of narrative modification in 「Sandryong yuligudu」 from an independent perspective.
As a result of analyzing the narrative structure of Perrault’s 「Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufleverre」(산드리옹 혹은 작은 유리구두) and Bang Junghwan’s translation of ‘Sandryong yuligudu’, it was confirmed that there is a big difference in the beginning, ending, and lesson of the story. Therefore, this study analyzed the message that Bang Junghwan would intentionally convey by modifying the original work, focusing on the beginning and ending part. In particular, this study demonstrated that he tried to form a connection between Sandryong, who lost her mother, and Koreans who lost their nation, through 투고일(2022년 7월 27일), 심사일(2022년 8월 25일), 게재확정일(2022년 9월 1일) 96 8호modification of the beginning part. And, this study focused on the fact that he intended to present the image of children which is new workers who open a new era by overcoming the terrible reality of the nation through the transformation of the ending of the story.
The results are as follows: First, Bang Junghwan paid attention to the Perrault’s version of 「Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufleverre」 in order to comfort and arouse sympathy for the people of Joseon, including children, who were experiencing the painful reality of colonial Joseon. His translation made the Joseon people feel an understanding of humans and compassion for life. Also, this translation was suitable for recognizing the suffering of others and forming a sense of solidarity. In addition, he described five times more ‘crying’ than Perrault’s original work, increasing the sadness of Sandryong. In addition, he tried to suggest the concept of a child, which is ‘a new worker in the new world’ who will lead the ‘building of kingdom of heaven on earth’. Lastly, his translation opened a new horizon for the unique writing style of ‘literature that cries together’ in the limited cultural environment of the Japanese colonial period. In conclusion, this study was able to reveal that 「Sandryong yuligudu」 is a work that proactively projected Bang Junghwan’s strong will, that is, ‘enlightenment and liberation of the nation’, which was beyond the limits of the original work.
