초록

장료씨는 살아서는 료성을 사용하지만 죽으면 위패 등에 장성을 쓰는 대표적인생사이성 종족이다. 현재도 장료씨는 張廖, 張, 廖(雙廖)로 표기되면서도 ‘생료사장’ 을 종족의 상징으로 삼고 종족 결집의 핵심 요소로 전승하고 있다.
명·청대를 거치면서 장료씨는 인구가 증가하고 경제력이 상승하고 신사층도 성장하였다. 하지만 장료씨는 단일 성씨의 종족과 달리 구심력이 약하고 지파가 세분되었을 뿐만 아니라 방어가 편리한 토루에서 각 지파들이 거주하면서 독립성이 강하여종족 결집이 쉽지 않았다. 명청교체기를 거치면서 전란 속에 보인 친청과 반청의분열과 갈등을 극복하고 청조 질서 속에서 종족을 결집해야 할 필요성이 증대했다.
특히 청 중기 과거 응시자가 증가하고 사회적 유동성이 심화되면서 장료씨 전체를통합할 필요성이 제고되어 통합 족보를 편찬하고자 하는 인물들도 나타났다. 건륭연간 족보 편찬이 시작되면서 생료사장 이야기의 문자화도 진행되어 ‘생료사장’이장료씨의 핵심 조규로 자리 잡았다. 이에 장원자의 희생, 우래공의 효도와 헌신, 료씨 일족의 쇠퇴가 부각되고 생료사장이 장료씨의 핵심 조규로써의 정당성을 확보하였고 이를 통해 각지에 흩어진 장료씨들이 다른 종족과 차별화하면서 종족을결집하고 지속하고 확대할 수 있었다. 생료사장과 같은 개별 종족의 다양성과 특이성은 개별 종족을 결집하는 상징이 되었을 뿐만 아니라 나아가 전통적 종법이 가진 통일성과 보편성을 상대화하고 중국 종족에 유연성과 다양성을 부여하여 세계에서유래를 찾기 어려운 중국 종족의 지속성과 탄력성에도 일조하였다.

영어초록

The Zhangliao(張廖) is a representative clan ‘with a different surname of life and death’ who uses Liao in life but uses Zhang when he dies. Although the Liaozhang is marked as Zhangliao, Zhang, and Liao(雙廖), he uses the ‘shengliaosizhang(生廖死張)’ as a symbol of the clan and transmits it as a key element of clan unity.
Throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties, Zhangliao's population increased, his economic power increased, and the gentries also grew. However, unlike the clan of a single surname, Zhangliao's centripetal power was weak and subdivided into several branches, as well as the development of Tulou(土樓) and strong independence, making it difficult to gather the clan.
Through the Ming-Qing transition period, the need to overcome the division and conflict between pro-Qing and anti-Qing during the war, and to unite the clan in the Qing Dynasty order increased. In particular, as the number of applicants in the past increases, the need to erase the traces of anti-Cheong, which the Zhangliao clan has, is also increased. As social mobility increased in the middle of the Qing Dynasty, some people wanted to integrate the entire Zhangliao clan.
As the compilation of genealogy began during the Qianlong period, the story of shengliaosizhang was also written, and the shengliaosizhang became a key rule set by Zhangliao's ancestors. It is almost 400 years old when Zhang Wuanzi(張元子) became the son-in-law of Liao Sanjiulang(廖三九郞) and his son Youlai(友來) used the Liao. However, even in the 21st century, there is no official genealogy that integrates the entire Zhangliao clan.
As the Shengliaosizhang story was written, the sacrifice of Zhang Wuanzi, the filial piety and dedication of Youlaigong, and the decline of the Liao clan were highlighted, and Shengliaosizhang also secured the legitimacy as a key rule set by Zhangliao's ancestors. And through this, the Zhangliao clan scattered around the region were able to unite, sustain, and expand the clan while differentiating it from other clans. However, the scale and form varied depending on the local situation and the composition of the clan.
The diversity and specificity of individual clans, such asZhangliao's Shengliaosizhang, have become symbols that unite individual clans such as Zhangliao, and further contributed to the sustainability and resilience of Chinese clans that are difficult to find in the world by relativizing the unity and universality of traditional Patriarchal clan system and giving flexibility and diversity to Chinese clans.
