기하학의 인식론과 교육학적 함의 (The Epistemology of Geometry and Its Pedagogical Implication)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 기하학의 인식론의 역사적 전개들을 역사-비판적으로 재구성하고, 여기서 내재된 교육학적 함의를 도출하는 것이다. 이를 위해 전반부에서는 기하학에 대한 칸트의 인식론과 이를 둘러싸고 진행된 논리적 해석과 현상학적 해석 사이의 논쟁을 재구성하고, 후반부에서는 필자가 지지하는 구조-구성주의 인식론의 입장에서 양자의 논쟁을 종합하려는 의도에서 헬름홀츠, 리, 푸엥카레, 피아제로 이어지는 공간에 대한 이론을 “운동학적 인식론”(kinematical epistemology)으로 특성화하고, 이를 구조-구성주의 인식론의 논거로 수용하고자 한다. 그리고 결론부에서는 기하학의 인식론에 내재된 교육학적 함의를 도출하고자 한다. 기하학의 인식론에서 도출할 수 있는 교육학적 함의는 매우 많다. 그러나 여기서는 두 가지 문제를 특히 강조한다. 첫째로, 기하학적 인식은 수학의 다른 모든 영역을 통합하는 토대적 사고를 마련해 준다는 점에서, 수학뿐만 아니라 다른 모든 과학적 개념 교육에 필수적으로 활용되어야 한다. 왜냐 하면, 모든 의미 있는 인식은 그것에 상응하는 직관 내용을 가져야 하는데, 여기서의 직관은 대부분 기하학적 직관이기 때문이다. 둘째로, 다른 모든 교수모델과 마찬가지로, 기하학적 교수모델도 관련된 지식의 인식론적 사실에 근거하여 설계되어야 한다. 이런 점에서 반힐의 기하학적 교수모델은 다시 수정되어야 한다. 왜냐하면, 이는 기하학적 인식의 발달에 관한 피아제의 모델에 일치하지 않기 때문이다.

영어초록

The goals of this paper are first to analyze the epistemology of geometry from the historicocritical perspective and draw its pedagogical implication. To do this, I would reconstruct the argument between the logical interpretation of Michael Friedman and the phenomenological of Emily Carson about the position of intuition in Kant's theory of geometry, and then synthesize the two interpretation by Helmholtz-Piaget's kinematical epistemology. Friedman asserts that the first role of geometrical intuition in Kant's theory of geometry is inferential, for it generates objects such as singular term that we could represent today by existential instantiation in the context of mathematical inferences. In other words, kant was dependent on monadic logic which can not deal with infinity. we today can represent the denseness condition formally by the axiom, "∀a∀b∃c(a<b →(a<c<b))". But Kant could not capture the idea of infinity formally but only intuitively. So the intuition in Kant's theory of geometry plays the role such as the existential quantifiers in formulas expressing the property of denseness. But Carson asserts that Kant's intuition is to provide us with certain phenomenological or perceptual spacial facts which could function as evidence for the axiom of geometry. In this context, I would like to synthesize the logical interpretation and the phenomenological by conceiving the formal structure of perceptual space as fundamentally kinematical in terms of the group of rigid motion that Helmholtz and Piaget have justified. The formal procedure of geometrical construction is based on the structure of possible transferring and rotational motions of his body, as the perceiving subject moves in and through space so as to put itself in perceptual contact with all possible spatial objects. I should stress two facts as to the pedagogical implication drawn from the epistemology of geometry. The first truth is that the geometrical cognition provides us with the foundational thought integrating the various domains of mathematics. Just like other teaching models, geometrical teaching model should be designed according to the epistemological facts of geometrical knowledge.
