    초록

When we diagnose Korean Protestant churches in terms of doctrine of salvation, two problems come into mind. The one is the acceptance-centered understanding of salvation. It is said that those who confess with mouth, will be saved(Rom. 10:9). The second is the narrow justification-centered doctrine of salvation. Those who is forgiven do not care about their sins. But this is a misuse of the doctrine of justification.
The objective of this study is to set forth a biblical soteriology, struggling with the above two understandings of salvation. To overcome the acceptance-centered soteriology, we deal with Luther's doctrine of justification. To correct the abuse of the justification-centered one, we deal with Calvin's doctrine of sanctification. And with the physical healing ministry and the inner healing ministry of Korean churches in mind, we explore holistic soteriology.
On the basis of Augustine's teaching of sola gratia, Luther understood faith as fiducia, and salvation as justification. For Luther, justification by faith meant to be forgiven through the cross of Jesus Christ and to enter into the right relationship with God. From Luther, we learn that both God's justifying grace and gift of faith should come ahead of our acceptance of Jesus Christ.
With Luther's doctrine of justification, Calvin emphasized the doctrine of sanctification, which had both the inner side of repentance and regeneration and the outer side of obedience of law. From Calvin, we learn that justification could not be without sanctification.
The 20th-century Ecumenical documents developed the holistic soteriology, which comprehended soul and body, individual and society, and humans and creation. Understanding human being as multi-dimensional unity, they explored the physical, psychological, spiritual, social, and ecological dimensions of salvation. This view corresponded to the biblical understanding of Kingdom of God.
However, the ambiguous relation between salvation and well-being made holistic soteriology irrelevant to our experiences. Actually, although salvation includes well-being, salvation and well-being cannot be identified and confused. They can be distinguished, but not separated from each other.
Therefore, this study drew a distinction between the essential dimension and the other comprehensive dimensions of salvation. Specially, this paper saw the essential dimension of salvation as Luther's justification by faith. Because justification is to enter into right relationships with God. This means that all the other dimensions of salvation, such as sanctification, healing, well-being, would be the comprehensive dimensions of salvation. Second, we took eschatological reserve into consideration for holistic understanding of salvation. Because the Kingdom of God has already began, but not yet completed. On the basis of these reflections, we argue that the holistic soteriology which recognizes justification as the essential dimension of salvation and takes eschatological limits into consideration, might deserve to be recommended as an alternative soteriology for Korean churches today.
