운초 장사훈의 한국전통음악 음조직론 (Tonal Organization Theory of Korean Traditional Music by Jang Sa-hun(張師勛))

초록

한국음악학의 전개에서 운초 장사훈 박사가 이룬 음조직론의 배경과 특징, 내용과 의미에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 운초는 여러 고악보와 문헌에 근거하여 전통음악의 음계와 선법을 밝히고 요성과 퇴성 등 선율과 연주기법상의 특징에 주목하여 악조의 특징과 변천을 설명했다. 운초가 한국전통음악에서 가장 특징적이고 중요한 연주기법으로 연구한 주제가 요성(搖聲)과 퇴성(退聲)이었으며, 이는 현재 한국음악 음조직론의 중요 개념과 용어로서 정착되었다. 현행 음악 및 구전음악의 채보와 분석을 문헌 연구에서 도출된 음계 및 선법 이론에 적용하여 설명하고 있는 점은 운초만이 해낼 수 있었던 빛나는 업적이다.
운초의 전통음악 음조직 연구는 기존 이론에 대한 반성에서 시작하여 거문고 연주법을 통한 연구로 점철되었고 여기에 가악(가곡․가사․시조)과 민요․산조․판소리 등에까지 확장하여 이루어졌다. 방법적으로 역사적 접근과 분석적 연구를 모두 아울렀으며, 정악과 민속악을 통일적으로 인식했다는 점, 한국적 선법 이론을 도출해 낸 점에 의의가 있다고 보았다.
운초의 음조직론의 독창성은 선법론에 연주적 특성이 결합된 형태로서 음계라는 하나의 작은 단위에 음악의 선율적 특성을 집약해 담고자 한 데 있다. 또한 ‘변조(變調)’ 개념을 비롯하여 『악학궤범』으로부터 한국음악의 모든 갈래를 아우르는 통합된 이론을 세우고자 한 데 의미가 있다. 운초 이론은 한국음악 음조직 이론의 원형으로 작용했으며 이후 등장한 다양한 음조직론의 모체가 되었다. 특히 이보형의 토리론 및 오용록의 동적음계론과 상통하는 부분이 큰 점이 주목된다.
다만, 악조의 운용과 분석적 측면에서 운초 세대에서는 통용되지만 이제는 다른 시각에서 바라볼 여지가 있는 부분도 발견된다. 이러한 지점과 더불어 운초가 제기한 중요한 문제에 대해서는 앞으로도 활발한 논의가 계속되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In this article, I have considered the background, characteristics, content and meaning of tone organization theory achieved by Dr. Uncho Jang Sa-Hoon in the development of Korean musicology. Uncho explained the characteristics and transitions of musical tones by illuminating the scale and method of traditional music based on various old scores and documents, and paying attention to the characteristics of melodies and performance techniques such as vibrating tone(搖聲) and sliding tone(退聲). The themes that Uncho studied as the most characteristic and important performance techniques in Korean traditional music were vibrating tone(搖聲) and sliding tone(退聲), which have now been established as important concepts and terms in the theory of tonal organization in Korean music. It is a brilliant achievement that only Uncho could achieve by applying the transcription and analysis of current music and oral music to the scale and tonal organization theory derived from literature research.
The study of the tonal organization of Uncho's traditional music began with reflection on the existing theory and was followed by research through Geomungo performance method, and was extended to classical songs(Gagok, Gasa, Sijo), folk songs, Sanjo, and Pansori. It was considered meaningful in that both historical approaches and analytical studies were combined, and that classical music(正樂) and folk music were uniformly recognized, and that the tonal organizaton theory of Korean traditional music was created.
The significance of Uncho's tone organization theory is that it is a form that combines the performance characteristics with the music mode, and intends to contain all the characteristics of music in one small unit called scale. It was a result derived from the Korean tonal organization theory, and it is meaningful to establish an integrated theory that encompasses all branches of Korean music. In a word, Uncho theory became the mother of Korean music tonal organization theory. In particular, it is considered to have influenced the formation of Lee Bo-hyeong's Tori theory and Oh Yong-rok's dynamic scale theory.
However, in the operation and analysis of mode(樂調), it was common in the Uncho generation, but now there is room for looking at it from a different point of view. I hope that active discussions on the important issues raised by Uncho will continue in the future.
