조동일의 소설 장르론 전개 양상과 의의 (The Progress and Meaning of Cho Dong-il's Genre Theory of the Novel)

초록

조동일은 대표적인 ‘문학사’ 연구자라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 한국 문학사를 통시적으로 기술하면서도 작품들의 공시적 의미를 놓치지 않으려는 그의 작업은 현재도 왕성하게 진행 중이다. 그의 방대한 연구사적 이력 중 본고에서 주목하고자 했던 것은 ‘소설 장르론’에 관한 것이다.
조동일이 스스로 언급했듯 이른바 ‘소설 시대’에 도달하기까지 문학사적 전개는 무척 역동적이었으며 그것은 한국문학만의 특징으로 설명될 수는 없는 것이었다. 조동일은 문학사적 전개의 추이를 포괄적이면서도 세심하게 따라가면서 소설 장르론의 토대를 마련했고, 그 전개 양상은 세 가지 시기로 구분할 수 있다.
첫째, 우선 그는 신소설에 관한 성격을 규명하기 위한 초기 작업에서 시대적 구분, 장르의 단속(斷續)에 주목하기 시작했다. 전대소설의 ‘구조’를 검토함으로써 조동일은 소설 장르의 본질과 그에 따른 변동 양상을 추적할 수 있는 근거를 확보하게 되었고, 또한 그것을 이기(理氣) 철학에 바탕을 두고 분석하여 서구적 번역어로서의 소설의 개념을 재검토하려는 작업도 시도했다. 이러한 과정을 통해 조동일은 특유의 4분법 장르론(서정·교술·서사·희곡)을 구성해냈다.
둘째, 조동일은 소설 장르론을 위해 역사적인 접근이 필요하다는 점을 강조하는데, 그 결과 이루어진 후속 작업이 『한국문학통사』였다. 그는 서사 장르의 시대적 변천을 두루 고찰하면서 조선 후기에 민중을 통한 문학의 확대에 이르러 소설이 성장하게 되었다고 주장했다. 특히 ‘전(傳)’과 소설의 관계를 해명하는 것이 문학사의 시대 구분의 기준이 된다고 역설하면서 ‘근대로의 이행기’를 설정했고, 근대소설을 두루 검토하면서 기존의 문학사적 기점으로 여겨졌던 작품을 비판적으로 읽어내기도 했다.
셋째, 서구 이론가들의 소설론을 비판적으로 검토하고, 특히 제3세계 문명권의 작품들을 두루 읽어가면서 소설 장르론의 외연을 확장하는 작업을 이어갔다. 세계문학론의 관점에서 안과 바깥을 두루 들여다보며 소설이 사회와 어떻게 관련을 맺으며 장르적 성격을 형성해 나갔는지 폭넓게 고찰했다.
이와 같은 조동일의 작업은 방대한 문학사적 자료를 실증적으로 검토하면서 동시에 이론적 논거를 마련했다는 점에서 경이로운 성과라고 보아야 할 것이다. 하지만 실증적 검토의 폭이 다변화한 것에 비해 이론적 틀은 초기 설정된 개념에서 거의 변화하지 않았다는 점, 또한 그가 상정하는 근대소설이 결국 서구적 ‘사실주의’ 소설에 가깝다는 점은 한계로 지적될 수 있겠다.

영어초록

Cho Dong-il is a representative researcher in the literary history. His work, which describes the history of Korean literature diachronically, and tries not to disregard a meaning of synchronic in texts, is still going on enthusiastically. Among his extensive research history, what I wanted to focus on in his treatment is a genre theory of novel.
Literary development was very dynamic, as Cho himself mentioned, until the so-called "the age of novel," which cannot be explained by the characteristics of Korean literature alone. Cho Dong-il has laid the foundation for the genre theory of novel while following the historical developments of literature in a comprehensive and detailed way, and the progress can be organized in three phases.
First, he began to pay attention to the division of the period and the rise and fall of the genre in his early work to identify the character of SINSOSEOL(新小說). By analyzing the "structural" of the previous novel, Cho Dong-il has a basis for tracing the nature of the novel genre and its changing patterns. He has also attempted to reexamine the concept of a novel, not as a Western concept, by analyzing it based on the Li-Ki(理氣) System(Yul-gok's philosophy). Through this process, Cho formed a unique four-part genre theory(Lyric, Narrative, Didactic, Drama).
Second, Cho emphasizes a historical approach for genre theory of novel, and the resulting follow-up was A Comprehensive History of Korean Literature(『한국문학통사』). Taking a overview the historical changes of the narrative genre, he argued that the expansion of literature through the people of the late Chosun Dynasty led to the growth of novels. In particular, he set up "a period of modern transition" by stressing that by explaining the relationship between the novel and JEON(傳) was the basis of the separation of the period of literary history. He also reviewed modern novels critically that were considered as a starting point for literary history.
Third, he has continued to review the novel theories of Western theorists critically and expand the scope of the genre theory of novel, especially by reading the works of the Third World civilization. He looked inside and outside from the perspective of world literature to see how the novel connected with society and shaped its genre.
Cho Dong-il's work should be regarded as a remarkable achievement in that he has prepared a theoretical basis while conducting an empirical study of a vast amount of literary historical data. However, the limitations can be pointed out that the theoretical framework has hardly changed in the initial set of concepts, and that the his concept of modern novel is, after all, more like a Western 'realism' novel.
