정진권의 수필문학론 연구 (A Study of Essay literature theory of Chung, Jin-Kyon)

초록

본고는 이론의 체제와 내용에 대한 미비와 모호성 때문에 문학으로서의 정 체성을 끊임없이 의심받던 수필문학의 비평적 상황을 보다 일찍이 인식하고, 기존 수필론을 비판적으로 검토하여 수필을 언어예술의 측면에서 조명하고 나 선 정진권의 수필이론과 한국 현대수필에서의 문학사적 의의를 고찰해 보고자 한다. 정진권은 시나 소설과 같이 수필도 ‘언어의 특수한 구조로서의 문학작품’ 이라는 관점에서 그 이론적 특성을 천착하였다. 아울러 체험의 문학 혹은 일인 칭의 문학을 철칙으로 여기던 당시 수필문단에 정면으로 배치되는 ‘수필의 허구성 도입’을 주장함으로써 적지 않은 파란과 쟁점을 불러일으켰다. 특히 그는 수필에서의 삼인칭시점 수용과 동수필(童隨筆)의 창작을 주장하며 수필문학의 창조적 영역 확대를 위한 새로운 이론을 제시하였다. 또한 그의 저서 『한국현 대수필문학론』은 학문적인 수필이론에 근거한 작품창작과 비평활동이 자리잡 지 못한 1980년대 초반 문학예술로서의 수필의 이론개발을 앞서서 수행했던 주목할 만한 수필이론서다. 이 책은 다른 문학장르에 비해 그 이론이 매우 소략 한 수필문학의 한계를 극복하고 나아가 영역 확장을 위한 시도를 개진하고 있 으며, 수필론을 연찬하는 연구자의 논문이라면 어김없이 언급될 만큼 상당한 성과를 거두었다. 그동안 우리 수필론은 수필을 창작하고 전공한 논자들에 의해 개진된 본격 담론이기보다는 문학론의 언저리에서 해석된 문장론이나 수사론, 외국의 것을 소개한 단편적 이론에 불과한 실정이었고, 평론 또한 시평이나 소설평의 여기 정도로 썼던 평자들의 비평이 대부분이었다. 그러나 수필이 발전하기 위해서 는 이론정립을 위한 연구자들의 논의와 함께, 기준이나 이론에 근거한 바람직 한 평론이 모색되어야 한다. 본격적 혹은 새로운 수필이론이나 평론가의 발굴 이야말로 한국 수필계가 관심을 기울여야 할 중대한 과제의 하나다. 이런 맥락 에서 정진권 수필론의 탐색은 고무적이다. 특히 그의 수필론이 한국 현대수필 의 문제점을 일찍이 파악하고 실제 집필활동을 통해 수필의 틀과 의미를 기술 하고자 했던 자생적 이론이며, 그가 보여준 끊임없는 실험정신의 진폭이 나름 의 체계와 방향을 가지고 수필문학의 영역 확대를 위해 구축되고 있다는 점은 의미가 있다. 수필의 특성들이 다양한 수필쓰기의 창조력을 구속하는 규제로 작용하고 있 다면 이는 재고되어야 한다. 더욱이 현대는 영역 간의 경계가 허물어지고 장르 에 관한 통념이 해체되면서 타 장르와의 융합, 결합, 연합, 제휴가 활발하게 이 루어지고 있다. 수필의 가장 두드러진 특성 가운데 유연성은 이러한 미래문학 으로서의 가능성을 보여준다. 미래문학으로서 수필은 전통적 문법의 파괴와 전도, 고정관념의 탈피에 의한 신선한 문학적 감수성이라는 새로운 형식의 필 요성과 맞물린다. 이런 점에서 실험수필의 창작은 유효하다. 지금은 탈 경계를 통한 혁신이 요구되는 시대다. 수필작법의 변화는 결국 수필장르의 미래와 정체성을 구심점으로 하여 진행되어야 할 것이다. 이를 위협하는 실험은 가치를 상실하기 때문이다. 수필문학 고유의 원리에 의해 실험다운 실험이 이루어질 때, 한국 수필문학의 확고한 위치와 문학적 영역을 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 정 진권과 같이 수필문학에 대한 진지한 고민으로 새로운 기법의 전략과 범주를 모색해 가는 이론가이자 전문수필가가 있어 우리는 이 희망을 여전히 결집시 킬 수 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, I will highlight the critical situation of the Korean essay, whose literary identity has long been suspect due to the inadequacy and ambiguity of the system and the contents of the theory underpinning it. To this end, I will examine the essay theory of Chung, Jin-Kyon and analyze the significance of literary history for the modern Korean essay. Like poems and novels, the essay also strives to achieve the theoretical characteristics of literary works, i.e., a special structure of language. At the same time, Chung insisted on introducing the fictitious essay, which was placed in front of the essay paragraph at the time when he regarded the literature of experience or the first person as literary. In particular, he proposed a theoretical acceptance of the third-person viewpoint, which expanded the creative genre of the essay. His book “The Contemporary Korean Essay on Literary Theory” proves that he is a remarkable essay theoretician. Its publication preceded the development of the essay as literature in the early 1980s, when the creation of works based on scholarly essays and critical activities was not yet established. This book, compared to other literary genres, has overcome the limitations of essay literature which is very abbreviated, and is attempting to expand the field, and if it is a researcher’s essay supporting essay theory, All.
In the meantime, our scholarship was not a full-fledged discourse developed by writers who created essays. Instead, it was merely a fragmentary theory that introduced sentence theory, rhetoric, and foreign concepts interpreted from the edge of literary theory. Most of the criticism of the writers that I wrote here is. Therefore, in order for the essay to develop, it is necessary for essay writers to seek favorable critiques of their work based on criteria or theory. Likewise, discussions among researchers should lead to establishing theories. These are the important tasks that Korean essayists should pay attention to, in addition to new essay theories and the excavation of earlier critics. In this context, it is encouraging to explore the quest for enthusiasm. In particular, Chung’s essay theory is autonomous; it grappled early with the problem of modern Korean essay and attempted to describe the essay’s frame and meaning through the activity of writing. The breadth of Chung’s experimental spirit is demonstrated by the system and direction of his essay literature. If the characteristics of the essay restrict the creativity of essay writers, they should be reconsidered. Furthermore, as boundaries between literary categories break down and myths about genres are dismantled, the essay is beginning to fuse, unite, associate, and ally with other genres. Growing flexibility regarding the most prominent characteristics of the essay indicates the possibilities for the essay’s literary future. The literary essay of the future is associated with the necessity of a new literary form, destruction of traditional grammar, evangelism, and the fresh literary sensitivity that results from moving beyond stereotypes. In this respect, the creation of experimental essays is a valid enterprise. Now is the time for writers to innovate through differentiation, and changes in essay writing should look to the future of the genre and its identity. Experiments that threaten this future are worthless. When experimental works are created utilizing this principle of essay literature, then these works will be able to secure themselves a solid position in Korean essay literature. If there is another theorist and expert essayist like Chung Jin-Kyon who will seek out creative strategies and new techniques, we may still have hope for this genre.
