초록

이 글은 김남천 창작방법론의 의미를 재조명한 글이다. 김남천의 창작방법론에 대한 연구는 상당한 편이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 창작방법론은 전향의 논리, 혹은 실패의 서사로 귀결되어 왔다. 여기에는 고발문학론에서 주장한 주체 정립의 문제가 관찰문학론에 이르러 ‘관찰’(묘사)로 수렴되면서 결국 주체 정립에 실패했다고 보는 관점이 자리한다. 또한 비평에 대응한 창작이 일제 말기에는 주춤해지게 된 것도 창작방법론의 전개가 실패했다고 보는 관점의 한 축을 차지한다.
하지만 창작방법론의 기획 의도와 전개 과정에서 드러나는 양상을 살펴보면 창작방법론은 주체 정립에 실패한 논의가 아님을 알 수 있다. 김남천은 창작방법론 전개 이전부터 ‘관찰’(묘사)을 염두에 두고, 객관현실의 묘사와 작가적 실천의 변증법적 통일을 이뤄내기 위한 방법을 모색해 나간다. 먼저 마르크스주의에 기초한 사회주의 세계관을 유지한 채, 사회주의 리얼리즘을 조선의 현실에 맞게 변용하고자 했다. 이에 리얼리즘의 역사를 소급해 18～19세기 발자크, 고리끼 등이 펼친 리얼리즘을 바탕으로 주체 정립의 근거를 마련함과 동시에 이데올로기에 갇혀 있던 리얼리즘에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓히고자 했다. 또한 창작방법론을 단지 창작을 위한 방법론 마련으로만 활용한 것이 아니었다. 창작방법론 전개에 있어 비평과 창작의 병행이라는 형식 실험 안에서 김남천은 ‘비평’에 무게중심을 둔다. 그는 ‘비평’ 우위의 관점을 통해 작가의 창작과정을 파헤치며 주체 정립의 방법을 모색해 나간다. 이는 창작방법론이라는 기표를 통해 조선적 현실에 맞는 리얼리즘론을 정립하기 위한 방법론으로 활용되었다는 점에서 창작방법론의 수사적 성격을 엿볼 수 있다.
이렇듯 비평을 우위에 둔 창작방법론 전개의 기저에는 ‘생활’ 반영의 문제가 자리한다. 카프 해산 이후 사회주의 이데올로기의 자리에 ‘생활’이 놓이게 되면서 작가의 세계관(주체)과 이를 반영한 객관세계는 ‘생활’의 문제로 수렴된다. 김남천에게 있어 ‘생활’의 반영이 곧 리얼리즘으로 치환될 수 있는 상황에서 ‘장르’에 대한 인식은 ‘체험’과 ‘관찰’을 매개하는 역할을 한다. 장르를 형성하는 형식은 장르의 외피만을 담당하는 것이 아니라 작가의 세계관 바탕으로 형성되는 것이었다. 시공간에 따라 유동하는 장르의 성격, 작가의 세계관이 창작방법으로 형상화된다는 로젠탈의 이론 등은 결과적으로 장르에 대한 인식이 ‘생활’의 인식과 다르지 않음을 보여준다. ‘체험’=‘관찰’의 관계를 증명해 나가는 과정을 통해 김남천의 리얼리즘론은 창작방법론이라는 기표를 수사적(修辭的)으로 활용하여 ‘조선적 리얼리즘’을 성취하고자 했던 응전(應戰)의 서사였음을 보여준다.

영어초록

This paper sheds new light on the meanings of Kim Nam-cheon’s creation methodology. Kim Nam-cheon’s study on creation methodology is considerable. Nevertheless, it has come down to the logic of conversion or the narration of failure. Here lies the viewpoint that the matter of the establishment of a subject claimed by the literary theory of accusation was converged to ‘observation’ (description) claimed by the literary theory of observation, and ended up failing in the establishment of a subject. In addition, it holds one axis of the viewpoint of regarding the development of creation methodology as a failure that creation corresponding to criticism slowed down at theory in the late colonial era.
However, when the intention of the planning of creation methodology and its aspects in the developmental process were examined, it has been found out that the creation methodology is not the discussion that has failed in the establishment of a subject. Kim Nam-cheon sought for the way to achieve of an objective-reality description and writer's practical dialectic unification, keeping ‘observation’ (description) in view before development. He tried to transform socialist realism appropriately for the reality of Joseon while maintaining a socialist world view based on Marxism. Accordingly, he intended to broaden the understanding of realism which had been restricted by ideologies of finding simultaneously the grounds for the establishment of a subject based on the realism developed by Balzac, Gorky and others in the 18th and the 19th century. The creation methodology is also that it was not prepared just for the methodology of creation. Kim Nam-cheon highlighted the role of 'criticism' in a formal experiment combined of criticism and creation in the development of creation methodology. He found out to establish a subject with investigating writer's process of creation through an omniscient viewpoint. At this point the signifier of creation methodology ultimately has rhetorical characteristics in that making use of methodology to set up realism fitting for the reality of Joseon.
Like this, the matter of ‘saenghwal’ reflections given priority to criticism is positioned the groundwork of creation methodology development. As ‘saenghwal’ was put in the place of a socialist ideology after dissolving KAPF, the writer's world view(subject) and the objective world reflecting this converged a matter of ‘saenghwal’. The recognition of 'genre' mediates 'experience' and 'observation' under the situations where ‘saenghwal’ reflections shifts into realism to him. The form that forms the genre is not a role of the crust of the genre but is formed from basing on writer’s world. The nature of the genre that flows according to time and space, Rosenthal's theory that the world view of the writer's is shaped by the creative method shows that the perception of genre is not different from the perception of 'saenghwal'. Through the process of proving the relationship between ‘Experience’=‘Observation’ the realism theory of Kim Nam-cheon shows that it was the signified of accepting a challenge that wanted to accomplish 'Joseon realism' by rhetorically using the signifier of creation methodology.
