초록

Transnational Paradigm in Literature: Issues in Discourses of National Literature and World Literature Jung-A Hwang(Hanyang University)‘Transnationalism’ has emerged as one of the most frequently discussed concept in the study of humanities, but there seems to be yet no academic consensus concerning its definition or proper approaches to it. This paper is an attempt to examine the problematics of transnational paradigm in literature, focusing on relevant issues presented by discourses of national literature and world literature. Discourses of Korean national literature, especially the one that is expounded by Paik Nak-chung,have tried to historicize the concept of nation or national literature. Paik Nak-chung argues that, in this age of globalization, ‘national literature’ is taking on new significance as a base to resist the crisis of local cultures and the decline of literature in general, whereas ‘nation-state’ is simply managing to persist even after it disproved its own claim to be an ideal political community. Thus, a certain tension develops between the ‘national’ in ‘national literature’ and the ‘national’ in ‘nation-state.’ On the other hand, when one gets into the space of ‘world literature’, one inevitably encounters the problem of dominance or inequality in the form of the hierarchical relation between the universal and the local. It is true that the inequality and hierarchy in the space of world literature are closely linked with the hierarchy among nation-states, but, as long as they are ‘literary’ matters, they never exactly correspond to the national boundaries. Here, again, comes in some inner distance between the ‘national’ in the space of world literature and the ‘national’ in the inter-state world system. This ‘tension’ or ‘inner distance’ between different meanings of the ‘national,’with all the important questions that it poses, has never been sufficiently addressed by discourses of national literature and world literature and, as such, it should be the proper location of transnational paradigm.
