초기 중국불교 법신론(法身論)에 나타나는 실체론적 사유경향의 원인 고찰 (Substantial Way of Thinking found in the Theory of Dharmakāya in Early Chinese Buddhism)

초록

중국불교의 법신론의 특성을 이해하기 위해서는 중국에 불교가 전래된 초기 상황에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 초기 중국불교 형성기에 가장 큰 영향을 준 국가는 중앙아시아의 쿠샨제국이었다. 쿠샨제국은 유목민이었던 아리안 민족이 중심이 되어 세워진 국가로 그들이 발전시킨 불교에는 그들 본래의 종교였던 조로아스터교의 특성이 크게 반영되어 있다.
조로아스터교는 마후라 마즈다를 절대선신으로 믿는 유일신적 종교이다. 현세의 질곡으로부터 인간을 구원하는 구제신적 성격이 강한 조로아스터교는 불교의 교조 붓다를 유사한 구제신적 성격을 지닌 미륵불 혹은 아미타불과 같은 존재로 이해하도록 하였다. 이러한 절대신적 요소를 지닌 미륵불과 아미타불에 대한 광범위한 대중적 믿음은 법신론과 같은 불교이론 정립에도 크게 영향을 미치게 된다. 이 글이 절대신 개념은 어떻게 성립되는 가에 대한 뇌과학적, 종교철학적, 불교철학적 이해방식을 요약한 까닭은 절대신적인 붓다에 대한 믿음의 특성을 보다 더 분석적으로 이해할 필요가 있었기 때문이다.
이 글은 이와 같은 요약을 통해 개념적으로 정위된 신(神)이 실체적으로 닫힌 존재로 이해될 때 생기는 문제가 초기 중국불교의 법신론에도 재현되고 있음을 혜원의 『대승대의장(大乘大義章)』을 중심으로 분석해 보았다. 특히 같은 시대의 많은 불교학자들이 형이상학적 위진현학의 사고방식으로 불교를 이해하듯이, 혜원은 무형적인 순수기 개념을 원용하여 법신 개념을 중국적인 실체론의 틀에 의해 이해하고 있음을 보이고 있다.

영어초록

In order to understand properly the characteristics of theory of dharmakāya in early Chinese Buddhism, it is essential to examine the historical background, of which the Buddhism was transmitted in earlier time in China. The Buddhism in the Kushan empire is the most influential factor on the formation of early Chinese Buddhist Society. Kushan empire had been built by the Central Asia Aryan who were originally nomadic people. Their main religion was Zoroastrianism and it gave a great influence on the formation of central Asian Buddhism.
The Zoroastrianism is a kind of monotheistic religion which people believe Ahura Mazda as one absolute God having the goodwill. Ahura Mazda is a salvational god who saves people from the distress of this world. The salvational characteristics of this God is thought to be the most influential factor to form the concepts of Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha in Central Asia. The strong belief in these Buddhist gods and the commercial success of the Kushan empire through the international trade of silk road enhanced to build giant Buddha statues in their territory. The popular belief in Maitreya and Amitabha Buddha as an absolute being is thought to be an important factor to develop the theory of Buddhadkāya or Dharmakāya. The reason that this paper summarize the explanations of brain science, mordern philosophy of religion, and modern Buddhist philosophy regarding the concept of god is that those explanation is necessary to understand more analytically the concept of an absolute Buddha.
The concept of an absolute god is thought to be formed by the process of ‘Agenticity’ in extreme in terms of brain scientist like Shermer, to be formed by the substantial understanding of the overwhelming power of nature surrounding us in terms of philosopher like van Peursen, and to be formed even in Buddhist theories by the permeation of the Vedic concept of absolute god into Buddhism in terms of Buddhist philosopher like Kalupahana. This paper analysed the text 『Dachengdayizhang 大乘大義章』 of Huiyuan(慧遠), one of the representative Chinese Buddhist monks in Wei-Jin(魏晉) period of China. The arguments of dharmakāya based on the substantial understanding of Buddha are frequently shown in this text. This tells us that the phenomena which are occurred when the god is understood as a closed being are also appeared in the early Chinese Buddhist dharmakāya theory. In addition, this text shows that Huiyuan(慧遠) understood the substantiality of dharmakāya by the concept of an immaterial pure Chi(純粹氣) as most of Buddhist scholars in Wei-Jin period utilizing the metaphysics of Xuanxue(玄學).
