帝國과 植民地의 近代詩學: 김억(金億)과 우에다 빈(上田敏)의 文學論을 중심으로 (Modern Poetics of the Empire and the Colony: focusing on the literary theories of Kim Uk and Ueda Bin)

초록

本研究は、日本の上田敏と韓国の金億の比較を目的とする。両者は近代 文学の確立期に西欧象徴主義による詩と詩論を紹介し、また、翻訳論の執筆を通じて近代叙情詩の基礎を築いた主要な文人であり、翻訳家かつ理論 家であった。本研究は、明治日本において近代文学の確立に寄与した上田 敏の文学史的業績を金億と比較・考察することで、以下の問題意識に分析 を試みる。第一に、西欧の受容と翻訳を通じて形成された東アジアの近代 文学は、その発展過程においてどのような類似性をもっていたのか、第二 に、帝国と植民地という特殊な状況が、普遍性を遮断するかたちで、両国 の近代文学のアイデンティティにいかなる差異をもたらしたのか、最後 に、日本と朝鮮、あるいは帝国と植民地の近代文学の差異にはどのような 政治的意味が含まれていたのか、である。 金億と上田敏は、各々『懊惱の舞蹈』(1921)と『海潮音』(1905)を通じ て西欧象徴主義の詩を受け入れ、結果、近代詩発展の礎となった。両者は いずれも「意訳」の方法論を掲げたが、詩語の不足と伝統の不在を認識し 「創意的意訳」を掲げた金億に対し、上田は自国の古典を挿入するために 「文芸的意訳」を掲げた。このような違いは芸術に対する観点に起因する もので、両者はいずれもマシュー·アーノルドの影響から芸術を中心に詩 を思惟していたが、外国詩の翻訳を通じて芸術の独創性と作家の個性を認 識した金億に対し、上田は古典と伝統の受容こそが芸術性を担保するもの と捉えていた。こうした差異が表れる理由は、上田の場合、文学を通じて 日本の近代国家としての発展に寄与していきたいという欲望を持っていた のに対し、金億の場合、むしろ作家と芸術の独創性を中心に近代文学を体 系化したいという欲望を持っていたためである。こうした金億の態度を通 じて、帝国とは異なる立場にあった植民地知識人の政治学を読みとること ができる。

영어초록

This study is a comparative study of Japanese Ueda Bin and Kim Uk, major literary men, translators, and theorists, who provided the foundation for modern lyric poetry through translating and introducing Western symbolism poetry, and writing on translation theory in the establishment period of Korean and Japanese modern literature. By examining the literary historical achievements of Ueda Bin who contributed to the establishment of modern Japanese literature during the Meiji era with that of Kim Uk, this study explores how modern literature in East Asia has similarly developed through universally accepting and translating Western literature, what are the differences that the special circumstance of the empire and colony brought to the identity of each nation’s modern literature to transcend this universality, and what are the political implications of the differences between the modern literature of Japan and Joseon, of the empire and the colony.
Kim Uk and Ueda Bin embraced Western symbolism poetry through publishing The Dance of Agonies (1921) and The Sound of the Tide (1905) respectively and as a result, they became the cornerstone of modern poetry’s development.
Both put forward the liberal translation methodology of literary and creative translation, but while Kim Uk advocated creative liberal translation, recognizing the lack of poetical terms and nonexistence of tradition, Ueda Bin advocated literary translation for the method of inserting Japanese classics while translating.
Such difference is related to Kim Uk and Ueda Bin’s view on art. While both Kim and Ueda believed that poetry was the center of art as claimed by Matthew Arnold, Kim recognized the originality of art and the personality of the artist when translating foreign poetry, while Ueda perceived that accepting the classics and tradition guaranteed artistry. The reason for such difference is that Ueda Bin desired to contribute to Japan’s development into a modern nation through literature while Kim Uk, as a colonial intellectual, desired to systemize modern literature centering on the originality of the writer and art. Through Kim Uk's attitude, we can read the politics of the colonial literary man who was situated in a different position from the empire.
