초록

이 본문은 소식의 중용사상을 책론(策論) 50편을 중심으로 규명하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다.
책론 50편은 소식이 26세 때 전시에 응시하기 위해 제출한 50편의 논문이다. 정치와 역사에 대한생각이라고 할 수 있는 이 글들의 중심부에 「중용론(中庸論)」 3편이 언급되고 있다. 논자는 정치론과 역사론에 바탕하여 그의 중용이 어떤 의미를 지니고 어떤 특징을 지니는지 규명하고자 한다.
이 글에서 소식은 중용의 근거인 성(誠)을 본성론이 아니라 인정(人情)의 측면에서 해석한다. 북송당시 성명론(性命論)이 체계를 잡아가는 상황에서 인정론(人情論)에 기반한 성의 해석은 중용을 형이상학적 담론보다는 실천적인 특성을 가지게 했다. 실천이 전제된 성의 해석은 대신이 갖추어야 할 덕목으로 발전하고 도덕적인 세계보다 훨씬 활발(活潑)한 세계로 열어놓았다고 할 수 있다.
소식은 또 성인의 도를 실천하는 데 있어 성만으로는 부족하다고 여기고 중용도 필요하다고보았다. 중용을 성인의 도를 이루는 일종의 방법으로 간주했다. 다시 말하면 과불급이 없는 상태뿐만 아니라 권도(權道)도 필요하다고 주장한 것이다. 따라서 소식은 끊임없는 상황의 변화 속에서 중을 찾아가는 주관적인 기준을 중시한다. 이러한 주관적인 기준 때문에 군자의 중용과 소인의중용이 있게 되는데, 공자와 맹자는 이것을 향원(鄕愿)이라고 불렀다. 이런 향원을 식별하는 능력도 성인의 도에 나아가는 하나의 과정으로 설정했다.
책론 50편은 소식의 초기 경학사상과 정치론을 밝히는데 중용한 텍스트이면서, 소식의 문학의이론적 근거가 되는 인정에 대한 생각이 드러나기 때문에 앞으로 깊이 있는 연구를 진행할 필요가있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to elucidate Su Shi(蘇軾)'s concept of the Zhongyong (中庸, Doctrine of the Mean) thought, focusing on fifty political essays(策論). These fifty politicalessays were written by Su Shi at the age of 26(1061) as part of his submission for the imperial examination. At the core of these writings, which can be considered reflections on politics and history, are three essays on the Zhongyong. This author aims to elucidate the meaning and characteristics of his concept of Zhongyong, based on political theory and historical theory. In this paper, this author interprets the core concept of cheng(誠), a key category in the Zhongyong, not from the perspective of human nature(性), but from the perspective of human emotions(人情). During the Northern Song period, when Neo~Confucianism, based on human nature, was being systematized, Su Shi's interpretation of cheng(誠) based on the theory of emotions can be seen as expanding the meaning of the Zhongyong into the realm of practical application.
The interpretation of cheng(誠) as something grounded in practice is expressed as a virtue that ministers must possess. Furthermore, cheng(誠) leads people not through the difficult moral world that is hard to practice, but along a path that is much easier to practice in everyday life.
Su Shi believed that cheng(誠) alone was not enough to practice the way of the sage; the zhongyong(中庸) was also necessary. He regarded the Doctrine of the Mean as a kind of method for achieving the way of the sage. In other words, Su Shi argued that not only is a state free from excess and deficiency(過 不及) necessary, but the principle of balance and appropriateness(權道) is also required. Therefore, Su Shi emphasized the importance of a subjective standard that seeks the “mid dle way”(中道) amidst the constant changes of circumstances.
Due to this subjective standard, there exists a distinction between the “middle way” of a gentleman(君子) and that of a petty person(小人). Confucius(孔子) and Mencius(孟子) referred to this as xiangyuan(鄕原). Su Shi also regarded the ability to discern xiangyuan(鄕原) as part of the process toward achieving the way of the sage.
The fifty political essays are key texts for understanding Su Shi's early Confucian thought and political theory. They also reveal his ideas on human emotions, which serve as an important theoretical foundation for understanding his literature. Therefore, further research is needed.
