일본 유학생 잡지 『대한학회월보』의 <몽유록계 서사>의 특징과 서사 장치의 실험 (A Study on the Narrative Characteristics and the Experiment of Narrative Equipment in the Journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo, the Magazine of Korean Students Society in Japan in Modern Enlightenment Era)

초록

이 글은 근대계몽기 일본 유학생 잡지였던 『대한학회월보』에 실린 몽유록계 서사의 특징을 살펴보고, 이러한 몽유록계 서사가 어떤 변주와 실험을 하고 있는지 밝히고자 하였다. 이전까지 선행연구에서 거의 다루어지지 못한 『대한학회월보』만의 특징을 살펴보고, 이러한 학회지의 성격이 몽유록계 서사물에 미친 영향력과 결과에 대해서 논의하였다.
몽유록계 서사물은 국내외 학회지에서 모두 보이는 양식이기는 하지만, 특히 일본 유학생 학회지에서 압도적으로 많이 등장했다. 당대 지식인들이 다양한 고전 양식 중 <몽유록계 서사물>을 선택했다는 것은 시대적 상황과 출판 매체의 적합성을 고려했을 때 알맞았기 때문일 것이다. 이 가운데 『대한학회월보』는 일본 유학생회의 통합을 목적으로 성립한 대한학회의 학회지로서, 통합 학회답게 다른 일본 유학생 학회지의 특성도 고스란히 담겨 있었다. 대한학회가 비록 태극학회나 공수학회까지 포함하여 통합을 이룬 것은 아니지만, 태극학회와 공수학회의 임원진이나 회원들이 대한학회의 임원진을 역임하고, 회원으로 다수 입회한 이상, 대한학회는 이미 일본 유학생회의 통합적 구심의 역할을 하기 시작한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 가운데 일본의 입장에서도 대한학회가 일본 유학생회의 통합 학회의 기능을 담당한다고 보였을 것이다. 따라서 『대한학회월보』는 통합 학회의 역할과 더불어 집단적 목소리를 내는 소통구로서의 역할을 담당했다고 보는 것이 타당할 것이다.
이러한 가운데 『대한학회월보』의 2기 편집진은 직접적인 정치 내용을 피하고, 간접적이고 비유적인 글, 소설적인 글로 기재해달라는 요구를 하게 된다. 이미 그 이전부터 압박과 검열을 받아오고 있는 상황에서, 몽유록계 서사물은 간접적, 비유적, 소설적인 장치로 비판과 의도를 우회할 수 있는 장치가 될 수 있었다. 이렇게 『대한학회월보』의 몽유록계 서사물은 통합 학회지로서의 특징을 담지한 채로, 새로운 문예의 실험과 활용을 통해 근대 초기 문학을 형성해나가는 발판이 되어주었다.

영어초록

This article aims to examine the characteristics of Mongyurok narratives in the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo, a magazine for Japanese students during the modern enlightenment period, and to clarify what variations and experiments these Mongyurok narratives are conducting.
The characteristics of the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo, which has not been dealt with alone in previous studies, are examined in this article, and the influence and results of the characteristics of this academic journal on the narratives of Mongyurok are discussed.
Monglyurok narratives have a style that can be seen in both domestic and foreign academic journals, but they have appeared overwhelmingly in academic journals for Japanese students' academic journals. The reason why intellectuals of the time chose the narratives based on Mongyurok among various classical styles may be because it was appropriate considering the circumstances of the times and the suitability of the publishing media. Among them, the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo was established for the purpose of integrating the Korean Student Association in Japan, and the characteristics of other journals for overseas students were intact as an integrated society.
Although the Korean Society did not integrate with the Taegeuk Society or the Gongsu Society, it can be seen that the Korean Society had already begun to serve as an integrated center for the Korean Student Association in Japan, as executives and members of the Taegeuk Society and the Gongsu Society had served as executives of the Korean Society. In the midst of this, it would have been seen that Japan also played the role of an integrated academic society of the Korean Student Association in Japan. Therefore, it would be reasonable to assume that the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo played a role as a communication channel for collective voices along with the role of the integrated academic society.
In the midst of this, the second-term editors of the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo avoided direct political content and demanded that it be written in indirect, figurative, and novel writing. With pressure and censorship already under pressure and censorship before that, the Mongyurok-based narratives could be an indirect, figurative, and fictional device that could bypass criticism and intentions. In this way, the Mongyurok-based epics of the journal Daehanhakhoiweolbo served as a stepping stone for forming early modern literature through experiments and utilization of new literature and arts while supporting the characteristics of an integrated academic journal.
