조선후기 연행록에 반영된 심양(瀋陽) 견문의 형성배경과 그 양상 (The Formation Background and Patterns of “the Observations of Shenyang(瀋陽)” as reflected in the Yeonhaengrok of the late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

이 연구는 조선후기 연행록에 반영된 심양에 대한 견문의 형성배경과 그 양상을 밝힌 것이다.
먼저, 조선후기 연행사의 심양 견문 형성 배경을 살폈다. 심양은 청나라 황실의 발상지이자 정신적 고향이었고, 병자호란의 패배로 조선인들이 인질이나 포로로 끌려와 생활했던 역사적 공간이기도 했다. 1679년부터 심양이 연행사의 정식 노정에 포함되고, 심양에 순행 온 청나라 황제를 문안하기 위한 심양문안사도 파견되면서 연행사의 심양 견문은 축적되었다. 사행원들은 자신의 소중한 체험을 보존하는 한편 널리 공유하려는 욕구도 강하게 작용했다. 그 결과 연행록에는 이른바 ‘심양 견문’이라 일컬을 수 있을 정도로, 심양에 대한 다양한 견문이 수록될 수 있었다.
둘째, 연행록에 반영된 심양 견문의 구체적 양상을 살폈다. 사행원들은 심양을 병자호란의 결과 수많은 조선 포로들이 끌려 와 비참하게 생활해야 했던 패전국의 수치와 능욕이 깃든 비극의 공간으로 파악하였다. 또한 화려하고 웅장한 사찰과 단정하게 정비된 민간 祠廟와 달리 방치된 太學을 보면서 불교와 민간신앙 등 이단을 숭앙하고 유교를 천시하는데 대한 비판의식을 드러내었다. 한편 활발한 시장경제와 발달한 선진문화에 대해서는 감탄하고, 풍속에 대해서는 대체로 부정적인 비판을 하되, 실용성을 중시하는 풍속에 대해서는 긍정적인 시선을 보이는 등 양면적인 시각을 노출하였다.
이처럼 연행록에 반영된 심양에 대한 연구는 조선후기 연행사의 중국에 대한 인식을 엿볼 수 있게 할 뿐 아니라, 오늘날 청나라 시대 중국 동북지방의 역사 문헌이 부족한 상황을 보충할 수 있는 소중한 자료로서 그 가치가 있다.

영어초록

The objective of this study was to elucidate the formation background and patterns of “the Observations of Shenyang” as reflected in the Yeonhaengrok of the late Joseon Dynasty.
Firstly, the study investigates the formation background of the “the Observations of Shenyang” in the Yeonhaengrok. Shenyang, the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty and the hometown of the Manchu people, was taken hostage or captured by many Koreans after the defeat of Byeongja Hulan (Manzhou invasion) in 1636. From 1679 onwards, Shenyang was incorporated into the diplomatic route to Yeonhaeng. To greet the emperor visiting Shenyang, Joseon dispatched special envoys. With the increasing frequency of these missions, the records of what the envoys heard and saw in Shenyang have gradually increased. The envoys documented their experiences not only to preserve their personal accounts but also to transmit these experiences to others. Consequently, “the Observations of Shenyang” section within the Yeonhaengrok emerged, containing a diverse range of content.
Secondly, the study analyzes the specific aspects of “the Observations of Shenyang” as reflected in the Yeonhaengrok. The envoys regarded Shenyang as a tragic and humiliating space for Joseon, as the city symbolized the aftermath of the Manchu Invasion of 1636, during which tens of thousands of Koreans were forcibly taken as captives and endured a life of hardship. In contrast to the grand and magnificent temples, as well as the well-maintained local shrines, the dilapidated state of Taehak(Confucian Academy) prompted the envoys to criticize the prominence of Buddhism and local folk beliefs, which they perceived as heretical, because of their strong adherence to Confucianism. Nonetheless, they expressed admiration for the city’s thriving market economy and advanced cultural development. While the envoys generally held a critical view of local customs, they acknowledged and appreciated the practical aspects of certain customs, demonstrating a two-sided perspective.
In this way, the records of “the Observations of Shenyang” in the Yeonhaengrok not only provide insight into how late Joseon envoys perceived China, but also address the current lack of research in China on historical documents related to Northeast China during the Qing Dynasty, making these records highly valuable.
