몽유록의 비평적 기능과 그 저변의 확대 (The critical function and the enlargement of base of Mongyurok)

초록

몽유록은 역사적 사건이나 인물에 대한 논평을 통해 작가의 정치․사회에 대한 비판 의식을 우의적으로 그려낸 작품이며, 현실 비판적 성향이 몽유록 양식의 일반적 특징으로 이해되기도 하였다. 그러나 오랜 시간 창작되고 향유된 몽유록의 양식적 특징을 일률적으로 말하기는 어렵다. 이에 본고에서는 작품의 창작 동인에 따른 ‘몽유록의 기능’을 유형화하여 살펴봄으로써 몽유록의 비평적 기능과 그 양상을 확인해 보고자 하였다.
작품의 창작 동인에 따라 몽유록의 기능은 (1) 사적 기억의 공론화를 통한 지배 담론에 대한 대항, (2) 지식의 수용을 통한 새로운 담론의 생산, (3) 비평 영역의 확대에 따른 개인적 관점 표출 등으로 나눌 수 있다. 이러한 기능이 반드시 통시적 양상을 띠는 것은 아니지만 특정 시기별로 주도적인 경향은 확인되며, 비평 대상과 영역은 후대로 갈수록 그 저변이 확대되었다고 볼 수 있다. 조선 중기 몽유록은 정치․사회 현실의 모순을 비평 대상으로 삼고 있고, 지배 담론에 대한 대항의 성격을 지니고 있기에 이 시기 몽유록의 정치적 기능은 특기할 만하다. 조선 후기 몽유록의 경우는 비평 대상이 중국의 역사와 인물, 이계(異界)의 인물, 소설 속 인물 등으로 확대되면서 지식의 수용을 통한 다양한 담론이 생산되고 유통되었다. 특히 19세기 몽유록의 경우는 특정 인물이나 사건에 한정되었던 비평 영역이 확대되면서 개인의 취향과 관심이 반영된 문화 비평적 양상을 보이기도 하였다. 조선 중기에 창작된 몽유록이 정치비평의 성격을 뚜렷이 지니고 있는 데 비해, 조선 후기의 몽유록은 정치비평 외에도 역사비평, 문예비평, 문화비평 등으로 다양한 비평의 양상을 보였다.
본고는 특정 시기에 산출된 몽유록 작품의 성향이 몽유록 전체의 작품 지향으로 이해되고, 또 현실 비판적 성향을 보이지 않는 일군의 작품은 주제의식이 빈약한 희필(戲筆)로 오해되어온 그간의 연구에 대한 문제제기에서 출발한 것이다. 본고를 통해 몽유록이 오랜 기간 비평 영역과 대상을 확대하면서 다양한 비평적 기능을 담당해온 역사적 장르임을 재확인할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Mongyurok is the genre of the works which allegorically expressed the criticism for politics and society through commenting historical events or figures, and the tendency of criticism to social reality is understood as the general property of Mongyurok style. However, It’s hard to make mention of stylistic characteristic uniformly about Mongyurok that had been created and enjoyed for a long time. Therefore, This paper want to make certain the critical functions and the phases of Mongyurok by categorizing ‘the function of Mongyurok’ in the perspective of creative motivation.
Depending on the creative motivation of the works, the functions of Monyurok are divided into three.:(1) the function of the resistance against dominant discourses through publicizing private memories (2) the function of the new discourse production through accepting the knowledge (3) the function of the personal viewpoints expression by extending critical domain. Though these functions do not necessarily appear the diachronic aspect, the leading function is identified by specific periods, and targets of criticism and domain of criticism is likely to enlarged as time passes. As in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty, Mongyurok made the contradiction of political․social reality the criticism target and had its own resistant characteristic against dominant discourses, the political function of Mongyurok at this time deserved special mention. As in the late of Joseon Dynasty the critical targets of Mongyurok were extended to china’s history and figures, the figures in out of world, and the characters in novels, various discourses were created and distributed through accepting knowledge. Especially Mongyurok in the 19th century showed the characteristics of the cultural criticism aspects reflected individual tastes and interests, extending the critical domain which had been limited to special figures or events. While the Mongyurok created in the middle of Joseon had the political criticism characteristic, Mongyurok created in the late of Joseon was varied the critical domain and targets as history criticism, literary criticism, and culture criticism and so on, apart from politics criticism.
This study has been set on the presentation of a problem for the previous studies that the tendency of Mongyurok works being produced at certain times was understood as the direction of all the Mongyurok works, or a group of works not showing the tendency of realistic criticism was misunderstood as the humble writings that was poor in thematic consciousness. Through this study, I expect to reconfirm Mongyurok as the historical genre that Mongyurok was in charge of the various critical functions, extending the critical domains and targets for a long time.
