초록

지금까지 많은 학자들은 『필록테테스』의 데우스 엑스 마키나에 대해 회의적인 입장을 취해왔다. 그들은 이를 작가의 즉흥적인 구성의 일환으로, 혹은 단순히 이야기를 마무리 짓는 수단 정도로 여겨왔으며, 에우리피데스의 드라마에 자주 등장하는 여타의 데우스 엑스 마키나와 큰 차별을 두지 않았다. 그러나 이 논문은 이 드라마의 플롯과 데우스 엑스 마키나 간의 긴밀한 결합에 주목하여, 이 장치의 치명적인 결점으로 여겨져 왔던 플롯과의 괴리를 훌륭하게 극복하였다는 점을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 데우스 엑스 마키나의 등장과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있는 극중의 요소들이 중점적으로 다루어진다. 그것은 곧 필록테테스의 초자연적인 상처와 신비로운 활, 네오프톨레모스라는 캐릭터의 창조, 그리고 극의 구조 자체이다. 첫째, 필록테테스의 상처는 신적인 운명에 의한 것으로서, 상처의 치유 역시 또 다른 신적인 힘의 개입에 의해서만 가능하다. 이러한 구조는 『콜로노스의 오이디푸스』에서 오이디푸스가 오랜 고통 끝에 신들에 의해 마침내 안식을 얻게 되는 것과 매우 유사하다. 둘째, 필록테테스의 활은 헤라클레스의 선물로서, 우정과 신뢰의 상징이며 깊은 경외심을 가지고 취급해야 할 신성한 물건으로 간주된다. 필록테테스가 이 신성한 활의 주인이라는 사실은, 신들이, 특히 헤라클레스가 그를 버리지 않을 것임을 암시한다. 이 활이 매개하는 그들의 오랜 인연은 극중에서 필록테테스에 의해 4차례 언급되고 있다. 셋째, 고귀한 자기희생에까지 이르게 되는 네오프톨레모스의 헌신적 우정은 신탁의 실현을 위협할 정도로 강력하게 드러나 마침내 신의 개입을 촉발하는 직접적인 원인이 되고 있다. 신탁의 정신에 응답한 그의 행동이 결국에는 신탁의 실현을 불가능하게 하는 상황을 초래하며, 이 역설적인 상황에 등장하게 되는 신의 개입에 필연성을 부여하고 있다. 소포클레스는 당시 에우리피데스의 전유물로 여겨지던 데우스 엑스 마키나를 자신의 드라마로 완벽하게 흡수하여 이 장치의 장점인 화려한 극적 효과와 환상적인 종결은 그대로 살리되, 태생적인 결함으로 여겨지던 플롯과의 괴리를 훌륭히 극복함으로써 드라마 작법의 신기원을 이룩하고 있다.

영어초록

Many scholars have approached the deus ex machina of the drama Philoctetes from a skeptical perspective: they have hitherto regarded the deus ex machina either as a mere improvisation or a simple story ending. There was no distinct difference between the deus ex machina of Philoctetes and the deus ex machina frequently appearing in Euripidean tragedies in their perception.
Yet, in this thesis, special attention will be paid to the combination of the whole plot and the deus ex machina of the drama. And it will be also demonstrated that the estrangement between the plot and the deus ex machina of the drama has been neatly overcome. This demonstration required this thesis to thoroughly explore the elements of the drama that are closely related with the appearance of the deus ex machina: namely, Philoctetes’ supernatural wound, his sacred bow, the invention of the new character Neoptolemus, departure, and the structure itself.
Firstly, Philoctetes’ wound which was given to him as his own moira by gods was to be cured by gods, as well. Eventually, Heracles, the deus ex machina, convinces Philoctetes of this and promises that Philoctetes will be healed. This structure is very similar to that of Oedipus at Colonus in which Oedipus finds an eternal repose by the will of gods after his long suffering.
Secondly, Philoctetes’ bow which was given to him as a token of their friendship and trust in each other by Heracles is regarded as sacred. The fact that Philoctetes owns this sacred weapon alludes to it that he will never be abandoned by gods, especially Heracles. The long relationship between Philoctetes and Heracles which the sacred bow intermediates is mentioned four times in the drama by Philoctetes.
Above all, Neoptolemus’ friendship so devoted as to lead him to sacrifice himself is strongly revealed. It is distinct enough to threat the completion of the oracle, thus directly cause the divine intervention. However, Neoptolemus’ action in accordance with the very spirit of the oracle, brings the situation where the completion of the oracle becomes impossible, paradoxically providing the drama with the inevitability of the divine intervention.
These elements that prepare the divine intervention are closely connected with the two important axes of the drama. One is the process of trial and frustration of the three plans of taking Philoctetes to Troy: artifice, violence, and persuasion. The other is the process of change of Neoptolemus’ character. When the tension of these axes gains the summit, the physis of Neoptolemus also manifests itself noblestly, and the author succeed in combinating the will of gods and nobility of men by permitting the divine intervention at the very moment.
Sophocles perfectly assimilated the device of deus ex machina that had been regarded as a monopoly of Euripides and made a most of the merits; a splendid dramatic effect and a fantastic ending. Moreover, by overcoming neatly the fatal defect that we’ve seen above, he made a new epoch of dramaturgy.
