요한묵시록과 그 해석 (The Revelation of John and Its Interpretation)

초록

요한묵시록은 다양한 상징을 사용하고 우리에게 익숙하지 않은 환시를 통해 계시의 내용을 전해 주는 책이기에 이해하기에 쉽지 않다. 이 글에서는 주로 기본적인 상징들의 의미를 살펴보고 그 상징들이 역사 안에서 어떻게 해석되었는지 개괄하는 것을 통해 요한묵시록 해석의 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
우선 요한묵시록은 다양한 본문 유형(Genre)을 갖는다. 신약성경에서 유일한 묵시문학 작품이지만 그 안에는 서간, 전례서 그리고 예언서로서의 특징도 포함된다. 본문 유형에 대한 다양한 견해들은 요한묵시록의 해석의 가장 기본적인 방향을 제시한다. 저자의 이해처럼 요한묵시록은 묵시문학의 한 유형으로 “예수 그리스도의 계시”(1,1)를 전하기 위한 책이다. 환시를 통한 신적인 계시는 여러 상징들을 통해 표현된다. 요한묵시록은 천체 또는 자연과 관련된 상징들, 동물과 관련된 상징들, 그리고 인간이나 색과 관련된 상징들을 대거 사용한다. 특별히 숫자에 대한 상징들은 기본적인 책의 구성(7)뿐 아니라 구원의 완전함(12)을 나타내는 데 사용되며 요한묵시록을 특징짓는다.
상징은 다양한 해석의 가능성을 준다. 그렇기에 역사 안에서 이 상징들을 그릇된 방식으로 해석한 예들을 찾을 수 있다. 하나는 천문학(astrology) 또는 점성술(zodiac)에 따른 해석이다. 이 경우 요한묵시록의 상징들은 황도대(zodiac circle)를 구성하는 열두 별자리와 그 관계로 해석될 수 있다. 다른 하나는 역사에 대한 예언으로 해석하는 것이다. 이미 초세기부터 요한묵시록에서 사용된 ‘천년의 통치’는 킬리아즘(chiliasm)으로 발전되었고, 이는 라틴어 밀레니엄(Millennium)으로 옮겨져 지금까지도 사용된다. 이러한 해석 방식은 상징들을 구체적인 세상과 교회 역사에 대한 예언으로 이해하게 하였고, 따라서 요한묵시록은 역사를 예언하는 책으로 인지하게 되었다.
하지만 이런 해석의 경향들은 요한묵시록의 메시지와는 관련이 없어 보인다. 요한묵시록은 구체적인 역사적 배경을 바탕으로 박해에 놓여 있는 신앙인들에게 희망과 위로를 주기 위한 책이다. 전쟁과 심판의 표상 안에서 저자가 전하고자 하는 것은 하느님의 절대적인 주권과 약속된 구원의 완성이다. 그렇기에 요한묵시록은 구원에 대한 약속이 반드시 성취될 것임을 환시를 통해 전하는 책이다.
요한묵시록은 종말에 대한 계시이지 다가올 종말에 대한 구체적인 예언이 아니다. 오히려 저자는 독자들에게 종말을 대하는 신앙인들의 자세와 윤리에 대해 말한다. 요한묵시록의 내용을 올바로 이해하기 위해서는 저자의 목적과 당대 독자들이 처한 정치·역사적 배경을 함께 고려하여야만 올바른 이해를 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The Revelation of John the book that is not easy to understand, because it uses various symbols and conveys the details of the revelation through the unfamiliar visions. This article will be dedicated to present the direction for elucidation of the Revelation of John by observing the significance of basic symbols and the interpretations of them throughout the history.
At the first, the Revelation of John has various text-types(Genre). Although, it is the sole apocalyptic literature in the New Testament, it also connotes characteristics of the other genres such as an epistle, liturgical use and prophecy. The various suggestions on genre of this book involves baseline of the interpretation for the Revelation of John.
As the author’s understanding, the Revelation of John is one of apocalyptic literature to deliver the “Revelation of Jesus Christ”(1:1). The divine Revelation through the vision is expressed with various symbols. This book uses numerous symbols includes cosmic or natural symbols, theriomorphic and anthropologic symbols. The numerical symbols especially reveal not only the structure of Book(seven), but also perfection of salvation(twelve), which characterize the Revelation of John.
The symbol provides possibility for the polyvalent interpretations. Thus, two examples of improper interpretations could be found from the history. One is the interpretation according to the astrology or to the zodiac. In this case, the symbols of the Revelation of John are elucidated with the twelve constellations of the zodiac circle. The other one interprets the Revelation of John as a prophecy of the history.
The “thousand-years-reign” in this book was developed to the chiliasm from the early centuries, and the latin translation of this term, “Millennium”, is still in use up to now. In this perspective, the symbols have been understood as the concrete prophecy for the world and the history of the Church, and the Revelation of John has been considered as the book for the prophecy of the history.
However, this tendency seems to have no relationship with the message of the Revelation of John. Based on the definite historical background, it is the book to provide hope and consolation to the faithfuls, who had been under the oppression. It is the absolute sovereignty of God and accomplishment of the promised salvation that the author intended to convey through the images of the judgement and the war. Therefore, the Revelation of John is the book that delivers the fulfillment of the promise for the salvation through the visions.
The Revelation of John is not a prophecy for the up-coming eschaton, but the revelation about that eschaton. In this book, the author refers to the attitude and ethic of the faithful, who are facing the eschaton. The adequate understanding of the book has to concern with the purpose of the author and the politico-historical situation of the original readers.
