초록

여기서는 오희문이 작성한 『쇄미록』을 통하여 임진 왜란기 해주 오씨 집안이 어떠한 방식으로 생계를 유지했는 지에 주목해 보았다. 오희문 일가는 충청도 임천과 강원도 평강에서 관둔전을 경작하고 타인의 토지를 병작함으로써 상당한 수익을 올릴 수 있었다. 이것이 오희문 일가가 생계를 유지하는 방편의 하나였다. 이 과정에서 16세기 관둔전 운영의 실상이 밝혀지게 되었다. 관둔전 경작은 병작의 방식으로 경작되었으나, 그 지급 대상은 일반민이 아니라 양반층이었다. 양반들은 관둔전 경작권을 이권으로 인식하였으며, 경작권 확보를 위해 상당한 노력을 기울였다.
전쟁이 길어짐으로 인해 민간의 폐해가 적지 않았다. 상하층 구별 없이 상당수가 근거지를 떠나 유리걸식하였다. 여기에서 해주 오씨 집안도 예외는 아니었다. 이들의 경제 형편은 넉넉하지 못하였는데 전황이 겹쳐짐으로써 상황이 더욱 악화되었다. 오희문과 그의 10여 명이 넘는 식솔은 굶주림에 시달렸다.
오희문은 전란 기간 동안 안정적으로 의탁할 만한 곳을 찾아 나섰는데, 그곳이 충청도 임천과 강원도 평강이었다. 이주를 결정한 직접적인 계기는 사위와 아들 때문이었다. 오희문 일가는 기본적으로 이들이 정기적으로 지원하는 물품을 받아 생활하였다. 그러나 이것만으로는 한계가 있었다. 오희문은 체면 불고하고 주변의 지방관 및 지인에게 물품 지원을 요청하였으며, 몇 푼의 이윤이라도 얻기 위해 자신의 노비를 상행위에 동원하였다.
오희문은 경제적인 문제의 해결을 위해 상당한 노력을 기울였다. 그는 피난 기간에 관둔전과 차경지 경작에 집중하였다. 관둔전 경작은 임천과 평강 두 지역에서 진행했는데, 경작권 확보 과정에는 인적 연망이 활용되었다. 아들 윤겸의 과거 동방 및 관직 동료들은 오희문의 피난길을 후원하였다. 오희문이 피난길을 이끌었지만 실질적인 책임은 윤겸에게 있었다. 그가 문과를 통해 관직에 나간 전도 유망한 관료라는 점이 직접적인 후원의 배경이 되었다. 평강에서 상당한 차경지를 확보하였던 것도 상당 부분 윤겸의 영향력 때문이었다.
오희문이 관둔전과 타인의 토지를 경작해서 상당한 수익을 올릴 수 있었다. 그러나 이에 필요한 노동력을 확보하지 못한 상황이었다. 庸人을 사용할 경우 품삯과 먹는 양식에 대한 부담이 컸다. 그리하여 오희문은 자신의 노비들에게 노동을 강요할 수밖에 없었다. 오희문은 지속적으로 노비들을 채근하였으며, 그마저 못 믿어 직접 나가 살피기도 하였다. 노비들은 주인의 노동 압박으로 인하여 항상적인 피로와 질병에 시달렸다. 결국 이들 중의 일부는 주인의 뜻을 저버리고 태업을 일삼기도 하고 도망이라는 방식으로 살아갈 방도를 찾아 나섰다.

영어초록

Through “Charmirok” written by Oh Hee-moon, he noted the question of how the family of Haeju Oh made a living during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The Oh Hee-moon family was able to earn considerable profits by securing the right to cultivate Gwandunjeon and Yeokjeon in Imcheon, Chungcheong-do, and Pyeonggang, Gangwon-do, and working together with other people’s land. This was one of the main ways for the Oh Hee-moon family to make a living. Through this study, it was possible to grasp the reality of the operation of the government office. In the 16th century, Gwandunjeon Hall of local government offices was operated in the form of a military operation, and the target of payment was mainly the aristocrats. The noblemen recognized the right to cultivate Gwandunjeon as an advantage and made considerable efforts to secure it.
The Imjin War was a long war, and there were many evils of the private sector. The people left the base area without class distinction and lived in glass. The Haeju Oh family was no exception. Oh Hee-moon was originally not generous, and the economic situation worsened due to the overlapping situation of the war. Thus, Oh Hee-moon suffered from the compulsion to be responsible for the livelihood of more than 10 upper and lower families.
During the evacuation period, Oh Hee-moon went out to find a stable place to trust, which was Imcheon in Chungcheong-do and Pyeonggang in Gangwon-do. This is because the son-in-law and son were local officials. Oh Hee-moon was living by receiving regularly supported items here. However, this was limited, and it was inevitable to suffer from constant hunger. Despite his face, Oh Hee-moon asked local officials and acquaintances around him to provide goods, and mobilized slaves for commercial activities to gain even a few pennies.
The Oh Hee-moon family used beekeeping every year, which is said to be a person, and the honey collected from here was carried to the local government office and sold it. Oh Hee-moon raised chickens in the house and built them in Seoul to sell them. The women of the Oh Hee-moon family focused on raising silkworms in April and May every year, making alcohol and making clothes and selling them to the market through women’s slaves.
Oh Hee-moon makes considerable efforts to solve economic problems. As part of that, during the evacuation period, the cultivation of Gwandunjeon Hall and Chagyeongji was concentrated. The cultivation of Gwandunjeon Hall was conducted in two areas, Imcheon and Pyeonggang, and human connections were used to secure cultivation rights. His son, Yoon Gyeom, and his seniors and juniors and colleagues actively sponsored Oh Hee-moon’s evacuation path. Oh Hee-moon was leading the evacuation route, but the actual head was no different from his son Yoon-gyeom.
An acquaintance of Yoon Gyeom, who is promising to become Jeong Cheol’s employee and Pyeonggang Hyeongam, actively sponsored Oh Hee-moon. It was also due to Yoon Gyeom’s influence that he was able to secure cultivation rights for a considerable number of other people’s land in Pyeonggang.
Oh Hee-moon was able to earn considerable profits by cultivating Gwandunjeon Hall and other people’s land. The problem, however, is that Oh Hee-moon has not secured the labor force to mobilize here. When buying a worker, the wages and capacity were not burdensome. Thus, Oh Hee-moon had no choice but to force his slaves to work. Slaves were mobilized for farming almost every day. Oh Hee-moon continued to recruit and urge slaves, and he did not believe in it, so he went out and killed them himself. The slaves were under pressure due to excessive intensity of labor, and eventually, they went against the will of their owners and tried to find a way to live in a way called escape.
