초록

이 글은 초기여성영웅소설로서 <이현경전>의 성격을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 나아가 여성영웅소설의 사적 맥락 속에서 이 작품이 지닌 의미를 파악하는 데 목적을 두었다.
<이현경전>은 크게 세 부분으로 나뉘어져 있는데, 군담을 포함한 입신양명담, 다양한 각도에서의 신분노출담, 혼사갈등으로 인한 남녀이합담이 유기적으로 연결되어 있다. <이현경전>에서 주인공 현경이 남장을 통해 과거급제 - 출정입공 - 지위극대화의 과정을 이루고 있다. 이 때 군담은 후대의 작품과 달리 하나의 흥미요소로 부각되지 않고 담백하게 그려지고 있다. 후대의 여성영웅소설의 경우 신분노출은 하나의 사건을 통해 단선적으로 제시되지만, <이현경전>에서는 지루할 정도로 복잡하게 제시되어 있으며 작품 전체에 있어서 상당한 비중을 차지한다. 이는 현경이 왜 여성으로 복귀해야 하는가에 대한 작가의 고민이 드러난 부분이라 할 수 있다. 한편, 여타의 여성영웅소설이 입공서사와 남녀이합서사가 유기적으로 연결되는데 비해 <이현경전>에서는 남녀이합이 작품 후반에 처음 등장하며, 혼사갈등을 중심으로 한 부부대립담으로 치환되어 나타난다. 이러한 과정을 통해서 현경의 영웅성은 온전하게 부각되는데 반해 남자주인공인 장연은 졸렬하게 그려지고 있다.
<이현경전>의 여성영웅소설사적 의미는 몇 가지 점에서 확인할 수 있다. 첫째, 여성영웅소설에 있어서 핵심요소인 입신양명구조가 <이현경전>에서 본격적으로 완성되었다. <이현경전>은 ‘권신에 의한 겁탈 문제’가 등장하고 있다는 점에서 앞 시대의 작품인 <설저전>의 영향을 받았다고 볼 수 있다. <설저전>에서 나타나지 않던 군담을 포함한 완벽한 형태의 입신양명구조가 <이현경전>에 이르러 비로소 나타나게 된 것이다. 둘째, 초기 여성영웅소설에서 오히려 진전된 여성의식을 보이고 있다는 점을 <이현경전>을 통해 확인 할 수 있다. 아무런 고민 없이 여성의 삶으로 복귀한 <설저전>의 주인공에 비해 <이현경전>의 주인공은 자신의 영웅성을 쉽게 포기하지 않는다. 이는 곧 여성 자의식에 대한 진지한 탐구가 이루어졌음을 의미한다. 셋째, ‘남녀불균형의 미학’을 온전히 그려내고 있는 소설이라는 점에서 주목할 만하다. <이현경전>의 남주인공 장연은 모든 면에서 현경에 비해 모자라고 용렬한 성품이다. 심지어 남녀 주인공 사이의 직접적인 대결에서도 현경은 우위에 자리한다. 이는 초기여성영웅소설이 오히려 후대의 작품에 비해 남녀불균형의 미학을 충실히 따르고 있음을 시사한다.

The purpose of this research is to concretely examine the characteristics of <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>, an early heroine novel, and the significance of a heroine novel in the context of history.
<LeeHyeonGyeongJeon> is divided into three parts consisting of the story for establishing oneself in life containing military story, the story for disclosing one's identity from diverse aspects, and the story for meeting and parting between men and women due to marital conflict, which are intimately connected to one another. <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon> comprises the main character, HyeonGyeong's process of disguising herself as a man, passing the state examination, going to war and distinguishing herself at a battle, and maximizing her social status. Unlike the works of the later generations, the military story part is not magnified as an interesting factor but is treated lightly. In case of the heroine novels of the later generations, disclosing one's identity is presented in a unilinear mode through an event. However, in case of <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>, it is complicated enough to be boring and forms a significant part in the whole work. This part reveals how great pains the author took about the reason for HyeonGyeong to return to a woman. While other heroine novels, meanwhile, closely connect the description of making a contribution and the description of meeting and parting between men and women, <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>describes the meeting and parting between men and women in the latter part of the novel, substituting the story of fight between husband and wife focusing on marital conflict. Though the heroine nature of HyeonGyeong is clearly expressed through such a process, the male main character, JangYeon is described as a childish and shameful person.
The historical significance of <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon> as a heroine novel can be found in several aspects. First, the structure of establishing oneself in life, which is a core factor in a heroine novel, was completed earnestly in <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>. <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>can be said to be influenced by <SeolJeoJeon>, the work of the previous times, in that the issue of committing a rape on a woman by a powerful courtier. The perfect structure of establishing oneself in life containing military story, which <SeolJeoJeon> did not have, had not shown up until <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>was written. Second, advanced female consciousness was discovered in the early heroine novel like <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>. Compared to the main character of <SeolJeoJeon>, who returned to the life of woman without hesitation, the main character of <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon> would not easily give up her heroine nature. This means that an earnest study was conducted on the women's sense of identity. Third, the work is noteworthy in that it is an early novel which fully describes 'the aesthetics of the imbalance between men and women'. Jang-Yeon, who is a male main character of <LeeHyeonGyeongJeon>, is dull and inferior to Hyeon-Gyeong in all respects. Even in a face-to-face confrontation between the two characters, Hyeon-Gyeong defeats him. This suggests that the early heroine novel follow the aesthetics of the imbalance between men and women more faithfully than the works of the later generations do.
