국악기로 활용 전래된 불전의 악기 연구 (A Study on the Musical Instruments Used as Traditional Musical Instruments in the Buddhist Scriptures)

초록

현재 연주되고 있는 우리의 국악기는 대부분 중국의 고대악기가 유입된 것이다. 국악기 중에 가야금, 거문고, 대금 등의 소수악기를 제외하고는 모두 중국으로부터 전래된 악기이다.
중국은 기원전 6천년 전부터 악기가 존재했던 것으로 역사가 전한다. 그중에는 인도로부터 불교가 전래되면서 함께 유입된 인도의 악기가 포함되어있는데 이러한 악기들은 불전이 한역되면서 중국악기 명으로 바뀌었다. 따라서 불전에는 인도의 악기가 중국악기의 이름으로 바뀌어 전하고 있다. 그 대표적인 예로 남인도의 고대악기 빈나(Vinna)와 북인도의 시달(Sidal)을 들 수있다. 이 악기는 불교와 함께 중국에 전해진 인도악기인데 불전이 한역 되는과정에서 중국의 공후(箜篌), 유리금(琉璃琴), 비파(琵琶) 등으로 악기명이 바뀌었다.
한역 불전에는 많은 악기 명이 전하고 있다. 중국의 고대악기 중에 대표적인 악기는 대부분 기록되어 있다. 불교음악을 연주한 악기로 소개되어 있는데, 이러한 악기 중에 현재 우리나라에서 연주되고 있는 국악기와 동인한 악기들이 있어 관심을 끌고 있다.
중국으로부터 우리나라에 유입된 악기의 역사는 A.D 1114년 송나라의 대성아악과 함께 들어온 것으로 전한다. 그러나 그보다 일찍 372년에 우리나라에 불교가 들어오면서 경전을 통하여 악기의 이름이 전해진 것으로 보여서 관심을 끌고 있다. 아직까지 어떤 경전이 최초로 들어왔는지 확인되지 않고있지만 중국으로부터 악기가 들어오기 이전에 불교경전이 존재하고 있던 것은 확실한 사실이기에 우리나라에 중국악기이름이 소개된 것은 불교경전이 최초라고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 악기들이 현재 국악기로 연주되고 있음을 보면 우리의 국악기가 불교경전을 통해 그 이름이 최초로 알려졌다는 결론에 이르게 된다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 불전에 악기의 명이 기록되어 전한다는 사실과 악기의 종류를 확인하고 불전의 부처님의 탄생, 출가, 열반에 어떤 악기가 등장했는지 살펴보겠다, 또한 그 악기들이 어떻게 전래되어 활용되었는지를 살펴보겠다. 이와 함께 불전에 기록된 악기 중에 현재 우리나라 국악기로서 연주에 활용되고 있는 악기를 밝혀보고자 한다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 불교음악에 연주되었던 고대 인도와 중국의 악기가 우리나라에 전래되어 현재 국악기로 활용되고 있다는 사실을 밝혀서 널리 알리고자 하는 것이다.

영어초록

Most Korean traditional musical instruments currently being played are introduced from Chinese ancient musical instruments. Except for a few musical instruments such as gayageum, geomungo, and daegeum, all of the Korean traditional musical instruments were imported from China.
In history, there have been musical instruments in China since 6,000 B.C. Among them are the Indian musical instruments brought with the introduction of Buddhism from India. The names of Indian musical instruments are replaced by the names of Chinese musical instruments as the Buddhist Scriptures have been translated into Chinese. The representative examples are the ancient musical instrument Vinna of South India and Sidal of North India. These musical instruments are Indian musical instruments passed to China along with Buddhism. In the process of being translated into Chinese, the musical instruments’ names were changed to gonghu, yurigeum, and bipa in Chinese.
There are many musical instrument names in the Chinese version of Buddhist Scriptures. Most of the ancient musical instruments in China are recorded there. They are introduced as musical instruments for playing Buddhist music. Among these instruments, there are musical instruments that are compatible with Korean traditional musical instruments currently being played in Korea.
The history of the musical instruments that have come to Korea from China is sometimes said to begin with the introduction of Daesung Aak (大晟雅樂) of the Song Dynasty in AD 1114. However, earlier in the year of AD 372, Buddhism was introduced to Korea, and the names of musical instruments were probably transmitted through the Buddhist Scriptures.
It is not certain yet which Buddhist Scriptures came first, but it is certain that the Buddhist scriptures existed before the instruments came in from China. Therefore, the names of Chinese musical instruments in Korea began to be introduced by the Buddhist scriptures. Given that these instruments are currently being played as traditional Korean instruments, this study comes to the conclusion that the names of Korean musical instruments were first known through the Buddhist scriptures.
This study firstly aims to identify the fact that the names of the musical instruments have been recorded in the Buddhist Scriptures and handed down. Next, it aims to identify the kinds of musical instruments used in the performance as the national musical instruments in Korea among the instruments recorded in the Buddhist Scriptures. Through this study, it aims to reveal the fact that ancient Indian and Chinese musical instruments, which were played in Buddhist music, were introduced to Korea and are now being used as Korean traditional musical instruments.
