‘유배’를 제재로 한 현대시의 양상 연구 (A study on the Aspect of Modern Poetry with ‘Exile’ Material)

초록

유배의 역사는 동서양을 막론하고 유구하다. 서양에서는 바빌론왕의 유태인 유배에서 볼 수 있듯이 기원 전까지 거슬러 올라가며, 우리의 경우에도 한 연구에 따르면 삼국 시대부터 유배는 존재해 왔다. 유배 당한 이들이 자신의 감정을 토로한 유배시 역시 그 역사는 마찬가지다. 그러나 그 중에서도 우리에게 많이 알려진 유배시는 주로 조선 시대에 쓰여진 것들로서, 정약용․김정희․김만중을 비롯한 여러 인물들이 유배시를 통해 자신이 유배 당한 억울한 처지를 호소하거나, 그에 따른 해배를 소망하기도 하였으며, 적소에서의 감회를 술회하기도 하였다.
유배시가 유배 당한 당사자들 자신의 작품이라면, 유배 제재시는 제3자가 유배 인물이나 그들의 정신, 그들이 남긴 문화적 유산 등을 제재로 하여 쓴 시를 말한다. 현대시인들은 억울하게 유배 당한 인물이나 그의 인품, 그들이 남겨 놓은 글 등을 제재로 하여 그들의 입장에서 시를 쓰기도 했고, 유배나 다름 없는 자신의 현재의 처지를 과거 역사적인 인물의 유배 상황과 견주기도 했다. 특히 우리나라의 경우 역사적 상황이 일제의 강점, 좌우 이데올로기의 대립, 군부 독재 등으로 점철되었기에 후자에 속하는 유배 제재시가 많은 편이다.
유배된 인물을 화자로 설정한 시의 대표적인 작품으로는 정일근의「유배지에서 보내는 정약용의 편지」나 고두현의「유배시첩」연작시를 손꼽게 된다. 이 유형의 시들이 지닌 특징은 시인이 자신의 마음으로 유배 당한 자를 대변하면서 그를 통해 독자들에게 메시지를 전달하고 있다는 것이다. 유배 인물을 통한 자아 성찰의 시에서는 유배된 인물의 인품이나 그가 남긴 문화적 유산 등을 통해 시인이 그를 본받고자 하는 태도가 주가 된다. 그런가 하면 이성부의「유배시집5․나」에서 보듯이 유배 당한 자를 ‘나’로 설정해 자아 성찰을 하기도 한다.
유배를 제재로 하는 시에서 빠뜨릴 수 없는 것은 디아스포라로서의 유배 제재시이다. 디아스포라 현상은 민족의 수난이 잦은 우리 민족이기에 세계적으로 유포되어 있는 실정이다. 그 중에서도 일제 강점기 때 연해주 고려인들의 중앙아시아 강제 이주나, 조선 이농민의 일본으로의 강제 연행은 그들의 의사에 따른 것이 아니었기에 유배에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 유배 제재시가 지니는 의의는 자아의 위치를 점검하고, 수난의 역사를 모르는 세대들에게 과거 우리 민족이 겪은 역사적 아픔을 환기함으로써 민족의 정체성을 찾는 작업의 일환이 될 수 있다는 데 있다.

영어초록

Both the Western and Eastern civilization have long history of banishment. In the West, the history of banishment trace back to the remote antiquity when the King of Babylon banished the Jews. According to a research, the history of banishment in Korea started from the Three Kingdoms Period. The history of Korean poem of exile which contains the emotions of exiles started along with that period. Nonetheless, widely known poems of exile are the ones mostly written during the Joseon Dynasty. Various people including prominent figures like Jung, Yak-yong, Kim, Jung-hui, and Kim Man-joong complained the unjust situation through the poems of exile. Through their poems, exiles also showed their wishes to rescind their banishment and expressed their sentiment from the place of exile.
As the poems of exile are the pieces written by exiles themselves, poems of exile material are the ones written by the third person about the exiles, their spirits and their cultural heritage. Some of modern poets wrote poems from the historical figures’ view that the topics were mostly about unjustly banished exiles, their characters, and their pieces. Furthermore, some other poets reflected their own lives which were no less than banishment to the exile of historical figures. The latter case was more common as Korea underwent Japanese Colonialism, the confrontation of ideologies and military dictatorship.
Jung, Il-keun’s Jung, Yak-yong’s Letter from the Place of Exile and Ko, Doo-hyun’s serial poems Anthology of Exile Poetry are the representative works which set an exile figure as a narrator. The special features of this type of poems are the fact that poets themselves speak for the exiles and at the same time they try to deliver the message to the readers. In the poems from which the poets represent the exiles, the main theme is their will to emulate the characteristics and cultural heritage of the historical figures. On the other hand, some poets set themselves as an exile for introspection like in the Collection of Exile Poetry 5. I of Lee, Sung-boo.
Among the poems of exile material, another significant category is a poem of Diaspora. The phenomenon of Diaspora dispersed all over the world due to frequent national ordeals. Especially the deportation of Korean Diaspora in Yunhaju of Russia to the Central Asia and the deportation of Joseon migrating farmers to Japan can be considered as banishment because it did not reflect their will. The significance of the poems of exile material is to do the introspection and establish the national identity by reminding the historical agony to the late generations who did not experience the historical ordeal.
