초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 도서관의 공간구성은 도서관의 목적을 달성하기 위한 도서관 건축의 출발점이다. 도서관은 다양한 이용자에게 지식과 문화를 제공하고, 도서관이 지향하는 목적에 맞는 공간을 조성하여 이용자에게 다양한 경험을 제공해야 한다. 초기 국내 공공도서관은 다양한 목적과 경험을 제공하기보다는 공부방 중심의 폐쇄적인 공간구조로 건립되었다. 그러나 최근 국내 많은 공공도서관이 해외 공공도서관과 유사한 개방형 공간 구조로 변화하고 있다. 개방형 공간구조는 사용자에게 자료 접근의 자유로움과 친밀도를 높여주며, 확장된 공간에서 다양한 경험을 제공한다. 따라서 국내 공공도서관의 공간적 변화는 도서관이 사용자 관점으로 변화하고 있음을 의미한다. 이에 해외 공공도서관의 개방형 공간 구조의 특성을 통해 변화된 도서관의 역할을 이해하고, 국내 공공도서관의 향후 건립 및 리모델링 계획을 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것에 의의를 둔다. (연구방법) 2014년부터 시작된 국제도서관협회연맹(IFLA)의 ‘올해의 도서관’ 수상작과 건축 우수 작품을 소개하는 해외 웹사이트에서는 2018년 이후에 개관된 도서관 중 연면적이 2,500㎡～5,500㎡ 사이인 도서관을 선정하고, 이들 도서관의 평면 등의 자료를 분석하여 공간구조를 코어, 오픈 플랜, 레이아웃으로 분류하여 그 특성을 파악한다. (결과) 최근 해외 공공도서관은 개방형 공간구성에서 더욱 변화된 다원적인 개방성을 추구하고 있으며, 이런 경향을 좀 더 명확하게 파악하기 위해 IFLA에서 올해의 도서관으로 선정된 3개의 도서관과 해외 웹사이트에 소개된 2018년 이후 개관한 2개의 도서관을 조사하였다. 이를 통해 최근 해외 도서관에서 공간구조의 다양성이 뚜렷하게 나타나는 것으로 파악되었다. (결론) 현대 사회는 다양한 영역에서 점점 경계가 모호해지고, 융합을 통해 새로운 공간이 창조되는 시대이다. 최근 국내 공공도서관 건립의 방향은 개방형 공간을 통해 모두에게 열린 도서관을 만들고, 지역 내 커뮤니티를 위한 공간으로 발전시키는 것을 목표로 삼고 있다. 이러한 개방성은 사회적 상호 작용과 경험의 확장을 가능하게 하며 도서관을 보다 많은 사람들이 이용할 수 있는 공공의 장소로 만드는 데 도움을 준다. 따라서 공공재로서 도서관은 기본 개념과 시대 흐름에 맞춰진 핵심 가치를 바탕으로, 사회적 허브로서의 역할 다양성을 도서관 공간에서 구현하여야 할 것이다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) The spatial composition of the library is the starting point of library construction to achieve the library’s purpose. Libraries must provide knowledge and culture to a variety of users and provide them with various experiences by creating spaces that fit the intended purpose of the library. Initially, many public libraries in Korea were constructed with a closed spatial structure centered around study rooms, rather than providing diverse purposes and experiences. However, many public libraries in Korea have recently been transformed into open-space structures, similar to public libraries overseas. Open-space structures enhance users’ freedom and familiarity in accessing materials, and provide diverse experiences in expanded spaces. Therefore, the spatial changes in domestic public libraries signify that libraries have evolved from the perspective of users. In this regard, it is valuable to understand the role of transformed libraries through the characteristics of open-space structures in overseas public libraries and to provide foundational data for the future construction and remodeling plans of domestic public libraries. (Method) An overseas website that showcases the winners of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)’s “Library of the Year” award and outstanding architectural works introduces libraries opened since 2018 with a floor area between 2,500㎡ and 5,500㎡. They analyzed the floor plans and other materials of these libraries to classify their spatial structures into core, open plans, and layouts in order to understand their characteristics. (Results) Recently, overseas public libraries have pursued more diverse openness in their open space designs. In order to better understand this trend, a study was conducted on three libraries selected as the “Library of the Year” by IFLA and two libraries that have opened since 2018, as introduced on overseas websites. This research found that the diversity of spatial structures is evident in recent overseas libraries. (Conclusion) In modern society, boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred in various fields and new spaces are created through convergence. Recently, the goal of establishing public libraries in Korea has been to create an open library for everyone and develop it as a space for the local community. This openness facilitates social interactions and the expansion of experiences, making the library a public place accessible to more people. Therefore, as a public good, the library should be based on the fundamental concepts and trends of the times and should implement diverse roles by creating a social hub within the library space.
