Chinese Costume Drama(中國古裝劇) refers to a sub-genre of Chinese TV dramas as a kind of costume drama that focuses on recreating the costumes, architecture, and behavior of the time in detail and displaying “traditional” recreated through visual realism, using ancient times as a backdrop. Although the categories match traditional and fusion historical dramas, there is a strong tendency to take a variety of storytelling from various old stories, such as classical novels, myths, legends, and folktales, to newly deploy and present them in ancient time and space backgrounds rather than focusing on the truth or historical considerations of history like traditional historical dramas. In Chinese pop culture since the 2000s, this drama is an important genre that occupies a very large position.
In Chinese Costume Drama, especially dramas that use the court as a spatial background, rite is a very important element. Court rituals are a magnificent spectacle that not only captures the public’s audio-visual, but also visually reproduces the social order, affecting the values ​​accepted by the public, and contributing to the reorganization of the order of Chinese society, which is rapidly changing after the reform and opening up. In Chinese society, where the old order before the socialist revolution and the order after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China collide, the storytelling of the local drama reflects and reveals the crack by suggesting the value that can attempt to suture the anomie public.
Therefore, in this paper, I tried to grasp the court ritual and the order of the empire that the storytelling reproduced by focusing on two dramas based on Internet novels among Chinese traditional dramas. Furthermore, I tried to find out what role these rituals and order play in making the whole storytelling and spreading the consciousness of the important theme of the drama. Through this analysis, I hope to understand the correlation between the rituals represented by TV drama and its storytelling, and to understand the effect of such storytelling on the public in a society in more depth.
