‘카르멘’의 조선적 수용과 역사적 상상력－염상섭의 『광분』론－ (Carmen’s Korean Adaptation andHistorical Imagination)

초록

본 논문은 염상섭의 『광분』을 발표된 시기를 전후하여 이루어진 다양한 매체의 수용 및 변용 양상과 관련하여 논의했다. 1930년대를 전후하여 <카르멘>은 소설, 오페라, 영화, 연극, 라디오극 등 다양한 매체를 통해 전세계적인 관심을 받고 다양한 방식으로 수용되었다. 염상섭의 『광분』은 이런 당시 ‘문화적 전회’(Cultural turns) 양상을 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 이런 맥락에서 이 글은 염상섭의 『광분』에 미친 <카르멘>의 영향 관계를 다각도로 살폈다. 특히 여성 인물 ‘카르멘’과 내용의 변용, ‘카르멘’과 ‘호세’의 관계를 통해 드러나는 식민지적 전유 양상과 당시 역사적 현실에 기반한 작가의 역사적 상상력이 어떻게 드러나는지를 논의하고자 했다.
『광분』에서 민경옥은 카르멘을 연기하는 것뿐만 아니라 실제로 카르멘이 되기를 욕망하는 여성 인물이다. 그녀가 부르는 아리아와 카르멘 공연에서도 조선적 변용 양상이 발견된다. 그렇지만 이 작품은 카르멘의 주요 모티브를 차용한 것뿐만 아니라, 식민지 조선에서 카르멘이 되고자 한 여성인물이 과연 존립가능한가의 문제를 제기하고 있다. 결국 민경옥이 서사에서 살해됨으로써, 서사는 파국을 향해가고 조선에서 카르멘은 존재할 수 없다는 주제의식을 드러낸다.
이 작품에서 또한 주목할 점은 전반부와 후반부의 서사가 이질적으로 나뉘어 있다는 점이다. 특히 일본인 피아니스트 나카무라(中村)가 경옥을 호기심의 대상으로 바라보고, 이에 경옥이 불쾌함을 느끼는 장면이 기점이 된다. 경옥에 대한 나카무라(中村)의 ‘엑쏘틱(exotic)’한 호기심은 소설 및 오페라 원작 <카르멘>을 관통하는 중요한 특징이다. 원작에서 호세와 카르멘의 관계는 ‘이국적’, ‘배타적’인 특징이 지적되었다. 염상섭은 이런 원작의 특징에 식민지적 관계의 ‘민족성’을 기입하여 적극적인 변용 및 창작을 시도한 것으로 보인다. 그리고 당시 역사적, 사회적 현실의 주요 사건들을 연결하며 민족적 응분과 저항의 주제의식을 전달한다. 그럼으로써 현실세계의 모순에 대한 저항과 욕망을 역사적 상상력을 통해 서사적 차원에서 대리 충족하고자 하는 구성을 취했다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper discusses the reception and transformation of various media around the time when Yum Sang-seop’s Gwangbun was created. Around the 1930s, Carmen was received and adapted in various ways around the world through various media, including novels, operas, films, plays, and radio plays. Yum Sang-seop’s Gwangbun is a work that well illustrates the cultural turns of the time. Therefore, this article examined the relationship between Carmen and Gwangbun from various angles. In particular, it discussed how the colonial appropriation and the author’s historical imagination based on the historical reality of the time are revealed through the transformation of the female character Carmen and the content, and the relationship between Carmen and Jose.
In Gwangbun, Min Kyung-ok is a female character who not only plays Carmen but also desires to become Carmen in reality. The aria Carmen she sings and the performance of Carmen also undergo the cultural transformation. However, this work not only borrows the main motif of Carmen, but also raises the question of whether a female character who wants to become Carmen in colonial Korea is even possible. Ultimately, Min Kyung-ok’s death in the narrative leads the narrative to a catastrophe and reveals the realistic problem that Carmen is impossible in colonial Korea.
What is particularly noteworthy in this work is that the narratives in the first half and the second half are divided into two different parts. In particular, the scene in which the Japanese pianist Nakamura looks at Kyung-ok with “exotic” curiosity and Kyung-ok feels uncomfortable with this is the starting point. This ethnic boundary between Koreans and Japanese becomes an important criterion for understanding Gwangbun. In Gwangbun, Nakamura’s “exotic” curiosity about Gyeongok is an important feature that runs through the novel and the opera Carmen. In the original work, the relationship between Jose and Carmen was noted as being “exotic” and “exclusive.” Yum Sang-seop attempted active transformation and creation by filling in the ethnicity of colonial relations to these original characteristics. And by connecting the major historical and social events of the time, he conveys the theme of national justice and resistance. Therefore, it can be seen that the work takes on a composition that seeks to satisfy the desire for resistance and desire against the contradictions of the real world through historical imagination.
