John A. Broadus’ Homiletical Method and Its Influence

John Albert Broadus(1827-1895) profoundly influenced American preachers in the last half of the nineteenth century. His book A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons has been used as a homiletic textbook for more than a hundred years, regardless of denomination. Yale University invited Broadus to give the Lyman Beecher Lecture on Preaching and applauded him not just as an admirable preacher but also a distinguished New Testament scholar. In the early 1870s, he was already known abroad as a prominent homiletician.
Throughout his books and sermons, one can recognize certain elements which ranked him as the most outstanding preacher. From the preparation of the sermons to their delivery, several factors—strong conviction of biblical truths, a process of sermon preparation called homiletical garden, clear language style, faithful exposition, sympathy with his audience—created unusual pulpit effectiveness.
Broadus built his own homiletical methods on diverse foundations. Broadus adopted rhetorical tools from classical rhetoricains (Aristotle, Quintilian, and Cicero) and Enlightenment rhetoricians (Whately and Campbell). He applied his rhetorical insights to the arrangement and argument of his preaching. Numerous homileticians such as Vinet, Alexander, Shedd were another main influence of his homiletical idea on expository preaching and its practical tools. He put various theories, fused them in his homiletical melting pot, and cast his own preaching methods to proclaim God’s message. Thus, Broadus delivered biblical truths with new homiletical ways.
