‘여리고 헤렘 제노사이드’의 폭력 메커니즘 연구 (A Study on the Mechanisms of Violence in “Jericho Herem Genocide”)

초록

폭력이란 인간 상호 간 비대칭적 힘의 관계 혹은 불균형적 권력 관계 속에서 발생하는 ‘타자에 대한 일방적이고 파괴적인 힘의 작동’이다. 따라서 폭력은 기본적으로 비윤리적 현상이다. 비윤리로서의 폭력은 개인과 개인, 집단과 집단, 집단과 개인 간 권력 관계의 견제와 균형이 무너진 상태로서 폭력 행위의 실체적 판단의 근거는 일방성, 파괴성, 의도성의 여부에 달려있다.
구약성서 혹은 히브리성서는 폭력에 대한 광범위한 내러티브의 기록이다. 신약성서와 달리 구약성서는 폭력에 대한 신학적, 윤리적 가치 판단보다는 현상적 실재를 그대로 보여주는 탈가치론적 텍스트에 가깝다.
본 연구는 구약성서에 나타난 폭력의 이야기들에 대하여 윤리적 정당성의 판단보다는 실체적 본질 탐색에 주목하였다. 이를 위하여 필자는 구약성서의 폭력 사건들에 대한 역사적 사실 여부를 묻는 실증주의적, 역사 비평적 방법론을 지양하고, 신화성과 역사성을 함께 담고 있는 성서 텍스트를 내러티브 신학의 독법을 통해 읽어내고자 했다. 즉 내러티브로서 성서의 기록 자체만을 놓고 ‘여리고 헤렘 제노사이드’에 나타난 폭력의 메커니즘을 밝혀내고자 했다.
여호수아서 1-12장 내러티브에 등장하는 ‘여리고 헤렘 제노사이드’ 현상은 폭력의 5가지 단계적 메커니즘이 작동하는 것을 밝혀냈다. 제노사이드 메커니즘 관점에서 여리고의 헤렘 사건은 단 하루의 물리적 폭력사건이 아니라, 40년간 이루어진 폭력임을 보여주고 있다. 이른바 ① 유일신론과 선민주의, 그리고 유토피아적 환상으로 무장된 ‘이데올로기 메커니즘’, ② 노예의 전사화, 12지파의 군사 조직화, 그리고 실전의 경험을 통한 철저한 ‘조직화 메커니즘’, ③ 이방 민족에 대한 분리와 배제와 제거의 윤리와 함께 철저하게 비인간적 존재로 인식하는 ‘타자화 및 비인간화 메커니즘’, ④ 남자와 여자, 어린이와 노인, 나아가 가축 등 살아있는 모든 생물학적 존재를 총체적으로 제거하는 ‘절멸화 메커니즘’, 그리고 ⑤ 절멸 이후 희생자를 역사에서 지우고 승리를 기념하고 희생자를 제물로 바치는 ‘정당화와 제의화 메커니즘’이 그것이다.
본 연구는 구약성서의 하나님에 대한 비판이나 변호도, 사건이 실제로 일어났는지에 대한 역사적 사실성의 여부도, 그리고 폭력의 정당성과 부당성에 대한 윤리적 논쟁도 시도하지 않았다. 다만 구약성서의 제노사이드 내러티브가 보여주는 폭력의 유형과 메커니즘이 오늘날의 제노사이드와 동일한 보편적이라는 것, 폭력의 메커니즘 자체가 이미 다양한 폭력의 또 다른 측면이라는 것을 드러냄으로써 오늘날 폭력에 대한 정확한 개념인식 및 폭력의 인지 감수성을 확장하는 데 그 목표를 두었다.

영어초록

Violence is an “action of one-sided and destructive power inflicted on others” taking place in asymmetric power relations or unbalanced authority relations between human beings. Violence is thus an unethical phenomenon basically. Violence as an unethical act reflects a fall in the check and balance of power relations between individuals, between groups, and between a group and an individual. The tangible grounds for the judgment of an act of violence depend on one-sidedness, destructiveness, and intentionality.
The Old Testament or the Hebrew Bible records broad narratives about violence. Unlike the New Testament, the Old Testament is closer to a post-value text that shows a phenomenal reality as it is than the theological and ethical value judgment of violence. This study focused on an inquiry into the tangible nature of violence stories in the Old Testament rather than the judgment of their ethical legitimacy. For this, the investigator abstained from empirical and historical criticism methodologies to ask whether violent events in the Old Testament were historical facts or not and tried to read Bible texts containing mythology and historicity as a narrative theology reading. That is, the intention was to investigate the concepts, operational mechanisms and types of violence based on the records of the Bible themselves as narratives.
In the study, a focus was put on genocide that was the essential and original form of violence and showed the totality of all violence mechanisms in the narratives of the Old Testament. After extracting 12 violent events that could be considered as genocide today from many violence narratives in the Old Testament, the investigator focusses on the case of the “Jericho Herem Genocide,” which is found in the narratives of the Book of Joshua 1-12 and considered a genocide that was planned and prepared thoroughly over a long period of time and committed in the most extensive and cruel way. These factors set it apart among the other 12 genocide stories found in the Bible. The five-stage mechanism of violence based on the mechanism theory of violence served as a theorical foundation for our analysis. From the perspective of the genocide mechanism, the Jericho Herem slaughter was not an accident of physical violence that happened just one day, but a 40-year story of violence.
The five mechanisms include ① “mechanism of ideology” armed with so-called monotheism, the idea of chosen people, and a Utopian fantasy, ② “mechanism of thorough organization” based on slave-turned warriors, military organization of 12 sects, and combat experience, ③ “mechanism of otherization and dehumanization” that considers alien people as completely inhuman beings based on the ethics of separation, exclusion, and elimination, ④ “mechanism of extermination” to eliminate all biological living things altogether including men, women, children, the elderly, and even livestock, and ⑤ “mechanism of justification and ritualization” to erase victims from history after their extinction, commemorate victory, and offer victims as sacrifices.
The present study is free of any criticism or advocacy where God is concerned, any investigation into the historical truth of events, and any ethical debate over the legitimacy and injustice of violence. The study simply demonstrates what types and mechanisms of violence are found in the genocide narratives of the Old Testament and shows that they are universal and the same as the mechanisms in today’s genocides. It further shows that the mechanism of violence itself was one of its various aspects, thus expanding the concept and cognitive sensitivity of violence today.
