초록

The theme of ‘city in film’ is continuously to be found in the film-history. The look of the city in film creates an interrelation between the multi-layered constructions in regard to the narrative structure, the perspective of characters, and the participation of spectators. ‘City’ or ‘urbanity’ in this case is not only a temporal-spatial definition which offers the artificial background for the story in various films, but also a social term which regulates the particular actions and the causal relationship of the characters in film.
This paper studies, how the city or urbanity is configurated in film, and would find out the interrelationship between ‘film and city’. The perspective of “filmic city” by Guntram Vogt (26) provides the analytical basement for this study. And the film <Run Rola Run>(Rola rennt, 1998) by Tom Tykwer would be referred as an example for this analysis.
The temporal fragmentation and its variated forms in the narrative structure of this film show an interactive playing of accident and faith. In particular, the three fragmented texts which quote repeatedly each other, and their structure of artificiality and scrappiness expose in itself urban construction. And this process of filmic presentation of the urban principle also reflects the irrational communicative distortion and the alienation in modern capitalistic society which could be summarized as postmodern intertextuality.
The analysis of the form aesthetic of this film is focused on the intro-scene and it’s creating of the urban space as city-principle. The dynamic intro-scene is functioning as a metaphor for the interactive playing of accident and faith and unravels the urban structure in the perspective of the temporal-spatial of film. Specially the camera in this scene that transcends time and space presents the quintessence of the urban imagination. And the urban space as city-principle in this film is hiding the geographical character of the metropolis Berlin and exposing only the atmosphere of the synthesized stage of modernity and ruin. This presentation of urban space is revealing the urban structure which is situated in our consciousness.
