초록

This paper is to mainly examine the problems between two generations, mothers and daughters in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club. The conflict of mother-daughter relationships in the US context remains the most central theme in diverse discussions of the novel. Their conflicts are based on different societal, cultural and historical backgrounds. Because of such differences, characters in The Joy Luck Club possibly have conflicts with each other. Moreover, social expectations of female roles divide mothers and daughters who are also members of a racial or ethnic minority. The daughters refuse to be treated as extensions of their mothers. They rebel against their seemingly demanding mothers to claim their individuality. However, this novel suggests that mother-daughter relationships can be an empowering force for both of mothers and daughters to establish their identities as Chinese-Americans. Finally, The Joy Luck Club ends with the reconciliation which, in a sense, reflects the compromise between two generations and cultures.
