『燕行記略』의 작자 고증과 자료적 가치 (A study on the Author and Material value of YeonhaengGiryak)

초록

이 논문은 숭실대 한국기독교박물관 소장 『燕行記略』의 작자를 비정하고 그 내용상 특징을 살핀 것이다. 『연행기략』은 1826년 동지사행의 연행록으로, 연행록 총서류에 수록되지 않은 자료이다. 소장기관의 목록·해제집에는 작자가 미상인 채 저록되어 있으나 같은 사행의 기록인 申泰羲의 『北京錄』을 함께 검토한 결과, 작자를 李鳳寧(1793~1871)으로 특정할 수 있게 되었다. 이봉녕은 부사 申在植의 수행원으로 사행에 참여했으며, 사행 내내 洪良厚와 동행하여 중국의 여러 명소를 탐방하고 청 문사들과 적극적으로 교제하였다. 『연행기략』은 내용이 다소 소략한 편인데, 원본 ‘燕行記’가 별도로 있었고 간편하게 열람할 용도로 해당 일자의 주요 일과만을 抄略한 버전일 가능성이 있다.
『연행기략』은 일기 형식으로 기록하되 책 말미에 왕복 노정과 도착 일자 등 사행의 경위를 간략하게 제시한 ‘雜錄’을 첨부하였다. 18~19세기 여타의 연행록과 달리 전대 연행록을 대량으로 인용 또는 전재하지 않았으며 지리나 역사 고증에도 그다지 관심을 두지 않았다. 일행과의 수창시, 청 문사와 주고받은 필담이나 서신의 내용도 본문에 전혀 수록하지 않았다. 그러나 작자가 직접 견문하고 체험한 사실을 바탕으로 기술하면서 異國의 풍물을 세심하게 관찰하였다. 특히 국내 및 왕복 여정의 서술을 대폭 축소한 대신에 북경 체류 시 일정을 비중 있게 다루었다. 청 문사들과의 교제가 성사되고 심화되는 과정을 담아내고, 중국의 주요 명승고적, 물산이나 화폐, 문물 제도에 관심을 드러냈으며, 중국인을 비롯하여 유구 사신과 러시아인에 대해서도 상세한 기록을 남겼다. 같은 사행의 기록인 洪錫謨의 『游燕藁』는 ‘시+세주’ 형식으로 이루어져 있고, 『북경록』은 12월 29일 이후의 일기가 남아 있지 않아 당시 사절단의 활동 양상을 구체적으로 파악하는 데 한계가 있다는 점에서 『연행기략』은 1826년 동지사행의 성과 및 의의를 온전히 재구하고 보완하기 위해 반드시 검토해야 할 자료이다.

영어초록

This paper determines the author of YeonhaengGiryak(燕行記略), owned by the Korean Christian Museum at Soongsil University, and examines the characteristics of its content. YeonhaengGiryak is a record of the Yeonhaengnok during the Dongjisahaeng(冬至使行) in 1826, and is data that is not included in the comprehensive records of the Yeonhaengnok. In the list and release collection of the holding institution, the author is recorded as unknown, but as a result of reviewing Shin Tae-hee's Bukgyeongrok(北京錄), a record of the same envoy trip, the author can be identified as I Bong-nyeong(李鳳寧). I Bong-nyeong participated in the envoy trip as an attendant of Vice Minister Shin Jae-sik, and accompanied Hong Yang-hu throughout the envoy, visited various famous places in China and actively interacted with Qing literati. The contents of YeonhaengGiryak are somewhat brief, but there was a separate original ‘Yeonhaenggi(燕行記)’ and it is possible that it is a version that briefly summarizes only the main routines of the relevant date for easy viewing.
YeonhaengGiryak was recorded in the form of a diary, but a ‘miscellaneous record’ was attached at the end of the book that briefly presented the details of the trip, including the round trip itinerary and arrival date. Unlike other Yeonhaengnok from the 18th and 19th centuries, it did not cite or reprint large quantities of Yeonhaengnok from the previous era and did not pay much attention to geography or historical research. The text did not include any of the written conversations or letters exchanged with the Qing literati or the exchanging poems with the companions. However, the author carefully observed the customs of other countries while writing based on what he personally observed and experienced. In particular, it is noteworthy that the description of domestic and round-trip itineraries was greatly reduced, but instead the itinerary during the stay in Beijing was given more weight, capturing the process of establishing and deepening interactions with Qing literati. In addition, the interest in Beijing's major scenic sites, products, currency, and cultural institutions were shown, and detailed records were left on Chinese people, Ryukyu envoys, and Russians. Since Hong Seok-mo's YooYeongo(游燕藁), a record of the same envoy, is composed of a ‘poetry and commentary’ format, and Bukgyeongrok contains no diaries left after December 29, there are limitations in understanding the aspects of envoy’s activities in detail, From the above In this regard, YeonhaengGiryak is a material that must be reviewed in order to fully reconstruct and supplement the results and significance of the Dongjisahaeng in 1826.
