이상 시에 나타난 ‘근대성의 파놉티콘’과 아이러니, 멜랑콜리 (‘Panopticon of Modernity’, Irony and Melancholy in the Poetry of Yi Sang)

초록

본고는 이상의 시에 나타난 아이러니를 통해 근대성 담론에 대한 그의반발과, 시적 어조와 시적 화자의 태도에 드러난 멜랑콜리의 문제를살펴보고자 한다. ‘이상 시의 아이러니’에 대해서는 이미 수사학적인측면에서의 아이러니, 상황적 아이러니, 운명적 아이러니, 우주적 아이러니등이 연구되어왔다. 슐레겔에 따르면 아이러니는 의견과 자기반론, 사고와반사고, 자기창조와 자기파괴의 이중성을 지닌 ‘무한히 부정적인 에너지’라고 한다. 필자는 이상 시의 아이러니를 직선적 발전과 전진을 완성하고자하는근대성에대한반발과당대의문화를지배하고있었던중심이데올로기의억압을 해체하려는 ‘탈중심화’의 전략으로 보면서 그 아이러니의 해체성과이중성이 시적 화자의 멜랑콜리한 어조와 텍스트의 멜랑콜리한 무드를생성한다는 것을 살핀다.
유명한 시 「오감도(시제1호」는 구조적 아이러니를 보여준다. “13인의아해가도로를질주하오”라는 명제는 “13인의아해가도로를질주하지아니하여도좋소”와 같은 반대명제와 등가적인 것이 되고 “(길은막다른골목이적당하오)”라는 명제는 “(길은뚫린골목이라도적당하오)”라는 반대명제와 등가적인 것이 된다. 질주와 질서를 강조하는 근대성과 의미의 투명성을요구하는 근대적 코기토에 대한 부정적 전략으로서의 구조적 아이러니,언어 유희가 사용되고 있다. ‘오감도(烏瞰圖)’라는 제목 자체가 혼자서는설명될 수 없고, 조감도(鳥瞰圖)라는 근대적 건축 용어에 기대고 있는 말로서의미를 지연(遲延)시키는 차연(differance)의 성질을 지닌 것이다. 또한 까마귀 ‘오(烏)’는 아해들을 감시하는 근대적 파놉티콘의 상징으로 읽힌다.
이상은 그렇게 근대성 담론과 근대적 코기토의 투명함을 해체하는 여러전략들을 사용한다.
이상은 매우 근대적인 사람이면서도 또한 그러한 근대성을 부정하는근대성의 환자이기도 했다. 「오감도시제2호」에서는 가부장적인 유교문화를,「오감도시제4호」에서는 숫자로 상징되는 근대적 합리성에 대한 부정과,「위독-금제」시편에서는 의사와 의학체계로 상징되는 근대성을 부정하면서아이러니한 어조로 중심담론의 권력을 비웃고 전복시킨다. 「각혈의 아침」에서는 죽음의 기호인 각혈을 가브리엘 천사의 수태고지로, 폐병에 걸린자신을 부활의 그리스도로 반어적으로 표현한다. 그러나 그러한 아이러니의유희는 대부분 니체식의 유쾌한 긍정을 보여주지 못하고 깊은 절망과멜랑콜리에 빠지게 된다. 이상 시의 어조와 시적 화자의 태도는 그러한멜랑콜리를 보여준다. 아이러니가 의견과 자기반론, 사고와 반사고, 자기창조와 자기파괴의 이중성을 지닌 ‘무한히 부정적인 에너지’라면 이상시가 보여주는 것이 바로 그러한 이중적인 것들의 공존이다. 이상은최고의 모더니스트이면서도 아이러니하게도 스스로 근대성을 부정하는근대성의 환자였고 그의 시는 아이러니를 통해 근대성 담론을 해체하려는탈중심화의 전략을 보여주는 해체주의적 텍스트라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper examines the question of irony revealed by Yi Sang's resistance to the discourse of modernity manifested through the melancholy in his poems, his poetic tone, and the attitude of his poetic personae. Others have already explored the irony in Yi Sang's poetry from a rhetorical perspective,his verbal irony, situational irony, irony of fate, cosmic irony,etc. According to Schlegel, irony is an "infinitely negative energy" containing dualities of opinion and self-contradiction,thought and anti-thought, self-creation and self-destruction.
This paper views Yi Sang's irony as a postmodern strategy of decentering, intended to overcome the oppression of the central ideology that had hitherto governed the culture of the times and to resist a modernity that was determined to carry out straightforward development and progress. It also examines the ways in which the destructiveness and ambivalence of irony produces a melancholy tone in Yi's poetic persona and a melancholy mood in his text.
This essay considers the irony contained in the first section of Yi Sang's poem "Ogamdo 1" where opposites are also seen as equivalents. Using a negative strategy aimed at the modern 'Cogito' that demands a modernity stressing speed and order with clarity of meaning, Yi Sang employs structural irony and word-play. The very title of the work, Ogamdo, cannot be explained on its own as it is a word inspired by the term "jogamdo" (birds-eye view) employed in modern building;hence, it has the property of différance or postponing meaning. The use of 'O' (crow) is read as a symbol of the modern Panopticon keeping watch over colonial children. Yi Sang thus employs various strategies to attack modern discourse and the clarity of the modern Cogito.
Yi Sang was an extremely modern person, and at the same time, he was an invalid of modernity who rejected that very modernity; for instance, as he rejects patriarchal Confucian culture in "Ogamdo Sije 2," the modern logic symbolized by figures in "Ogamdo Sije 4," or the modernity represented by doctors and the medical system in "Widok-geumje"(Prohibition of Serious Illness), Yi Sang mocks and subverts the power of the dominant discourse by irony. In "Gakhyeorui achim" (Blood-spitting morning) he ironically expresses blood-spitting by the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel, a lung-diseased patient by the risen Christ. Such ironical games are mostly incapable of displaying Nietzschean playfulness but rather, they encourage one to fall into deep despair and melancholy. The tone and attitude of the poetic persona in Yi Sang's poems show such melancholy. If irony is an "infinitely negative energy" containing dualities of opinion and self -contradiction, thought and anti-thought, self-creation and self-destruction, what we see in Yi Sang's poetry is precisely a coexistence of those features. Yi Sang was a supreme Modernist and ironically he was at the same time an invalid of modernity who rejected modernity, and through irony, his poems can be considered as deconstructive texts that reveal a decentering strategy intended to break down the discourse of modernity by means of irony.
