우리 사회의 멜랑콜리: 자본주의적 멜랑콜리와 좌파 멜랑콜리 (The Melancholy in our Society: the capitalistic melancholy and the left-wing melancholy)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 우리 사회의 병리현상인 ‘사회적 멜랑콜리’를 두 가지 측면에서 분석하는 데 있다. 하나는 자본주의 경제체제 내에서 자본에 대한 물신숭배가 낳은 ‘자본주의적 멜랑콜리’이고, 다른 하나는 일찌감치 그 멜랑콜리의 원인을 간파하고 체제변혁을 갈망했던 좌파 진영이 빠져든 ‘좌파 멜랑콜리’이다. 추가적으로 나는 이런 멜랑콜리의 지성사적 배경으로서 그리스 신화를 도입하고 분석할 것이다.
먼저 피츠제랄드의 작품 『위대한 개츠비』에서 데이지의 목소리에 대한 기술방식에 주목하고, “돈으로 충만한 목소리”라는 표현에 초점을 맞출 것이다. 이것은 돈에 대한 물신숭배를 가리킨다. 사실 이런 물신숭배는 피그말리온 신화에까지 소급된다. 여성혐오증자인 피그말리온은 자신의 조각품을 사랑하는데, 이것은 자기의 분신(조각상)을 사랑하는 것을 뜻한다. 자기사랑이라는 점에서 피그말리온은 나르키소스와 일치한다. 피그말리온의 후예들은 수학적이고 합리적인 질서로 표상되는 세계의 설계도면을 집요하게 추구했고 그것을 현실화할 수 있는 기술을 개발했다. 현대의 과학기술과 자본주의 경제체제의 바탕에는 이런 나르시시즘이 놓여있다. 이것을 바탕으로 이 시대의 멜랑콜리가 성장할 수 있었던 것이다. 벤야민과 짐멜, 맑스와 르 고프 등의 논의를 원용하면서, 나는 자본주의적 멜랑콜리를 정밀하게 규정할 것이다.
그런데 흥미롭게도 이런 멜랑콜리를 극복하고자 한 좌파도 멜랑콜리에서 자유롭지 않다. 좌파에는 고유의 멜랑콜리가 존재한다. 나는 좌파 멜랑콜리를 두 가지로 구분한다. 한편으로 기존 사회질서에 만족하지 못하고 마치 예술가처럼 새롭게 사회를 변혁하려는 창조적 멜랑콜리가 있다. 다른 한편으로 벤야민이 말한 바 있는 무기력한 좌파 멜랑콜리가 있다. 전자가 예술가적 천재의 멜랑콜리에서 유래한 것인 반면, 후자는 중세 아케디아에서 유래한 멜랑콜리다. 벤야민이 보기에, 무기력한 좌파 멜랑콜리는 절망과 허무로 귀착된다. 사회적 멜랑콜리를 치유하는 근본 해법은 차치하고라도, 나는 이 글을 통해 사회적 멜랑콜리를 치유하는 해법 찾기가 지식인들의 어께에 얹힌 엄중한 과제라는 사실만큼만은 입증하려 했다.

영어초록

The aim of this paper is to analyse pathological symtoms in our society, especially ‘the social melancholy’ in two aspects. The one is the capitalistic melancholy which the capitalistic economy system have brought about, the other is the ‘left-wing melancholy’, into which the left-wing have sunk, who had seen through a few causes of this capitalistic melancholy and had longed for the revolutions. Additionally I will treat two Greek myths, narcissus and pygmalion as the intellectual historical background of this melancholy.
First of all I am going to focus on the mode of description of the Daisy’s voice in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s work, The Great Gatsby. This passage, “her voice is full of money” is a expression among many descriptions and indicate that Daisy is a sort of money fetishist. In fact this fetishim extends back over the pygmalion’s myth. Pygmalion loved his own sculpture, because he could not love the other, but only the thing that was seen as his alter ego. In the aspect of Self-loving, pygmalion is very similar to narcissus. The decendants of pygmalion tried to seek the blueprint of the world, which represents the mathematical and reasonable order and developed the technology which could actualize it. This narcissism lies on the ground of modern technology and capital economy system. Based on this narcissism, the melancholy could be rampant in our society. I will define exactly the capitalistic melancholy, referring to the discourses of Benjamin, Simmel, Marx, and Le Goff etc.
Interestingly the left-wing also were not free from the melancholy, even if they tried to overcome the capitalistic system. I divided the left-wing melancholy into 2 parts. On the one hand there is the creative melancholic that are not satisfied with ready-made social order and want to change it as if they were artists. On the other hand there is the powerless melancholy that Benjamin said about. The former is derived from the melancholy of genius artists and the latter is derived from the acedia in Middle Ages. According to Benjamin, the helpless left-wing melancholy is resulted in the nihilism. Putting aside a foundamental solution to heal the social melancholy, this paper is proving that it is the heavy responsibility of intellectuals to seek for the solution.
