초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspect of narrative enlightenment in the field of rural enlightenment shown through NongchonCheongnyeon, which occurred during the 1930's between peasants or peasants and intellectuals. The YMCA was already publishing the bulletin, Cheongnyeon when they started issuing NongchonCheongnyeon to support rural business. The difference between NongchonCheongnyeon and Cheongnyeon was their target audiences. Cheongnyeon was made for intellectuals and urbanites but NongchonCheongnyeon was specifically intended for peasants and the people responsible for rural businesses. Therefore, an effective way to understand how peasants were enlightened through text during the 1930's is to examine periodicals like NongchonCheongnyeon.


Young intellectuals in YMCA, including Byeongsun Hong, focused on spiritual reform for peasants and the establishment of a cooperative association. Their message was delivered to peasants through special articles in NongchonCheongnyeon. These articles which targeted peasants were easy to read in comparison to other periodicals. YMCA also serialized one to three novels per each issue as they gave high credit towards novels' popularity and educational value. For instance, 「Three Ants」 was an ant fable for historical enlightenment and 「The Success of a Couple」 was a popular novel that evoked peasants' sympathy.


At first glimpse, those serialized novels in NongchonCheongnyeon seem more like short descriptions than novels in modern ages. However, they were intentionally chosen by editors of NongchonCheongnyeon to enlighten peasants. Novels certainly played an important role in terms of rural enlightenment in the 1930's. They appeared in many different forms of written media, in many different types, according to the authors' intention or readers' demand. An awareness of these 'rural' novels is required to understand novels in media like NongchonCheongnyeon. People without this awareness may have a limited understanding of these novels.
