One of the main purposes of the study of relation between religion andemotion is to understand the function of emotion in religion. Bhakti inHinduism is one of main subjects which such studies deal with. The aimof this paper is to understand what emotion means and how it functionsin Hinduism by analyzing bhakti. For this reason, this article overviews atfirst several aspects of bhakti, especially meaning and nature(essence),origin and historical change, types and stages, and practices of bhakti.
Then it concentrates on Vaishnava bhakti which belongs to saguna bhaktiand has more emotional characteristics and finally analyzes the meaningand function of emotion in bhakti through Bhagavata Purana which is oneof main texts in bhakti and Hinduism.
This study draws conclusion like below. Bhakti in Hinduism is thethought and way to reach the highest religious goal to become one withGod through the relation of love with God in emotional dimension. Anessential meaning of bhakti is the devotional love to God only for thepleasure of God or service for God without expecting any reward from God. The most important thing in bhakti is to concentrate one's mind andheart entirely on God (his favouring God whom he chooses among mainHindu gods) with emotions such as devotional or erotic love, friendship, fear, even hatred to God. Bhagavata Purna shows that this kind ofemotional concentration removes devotee's egoism which causes bandageand suffering of man and leads devotee to the God. The renunciation ofegoism leading to Moksha is a common concern and goal of threeyogas(karma, jnana, bhakti) in Hinduism. But this study finds twoimportant differences among them.
The first one is that bhakti yoga through emotional concentration is arelatively easier way to Moksha than jnana yoga through knowledge andkarma yoga through action which has not desire. The second one is theviewpoint and attitude about desire. There are two traditions in Hinduism, ascetic tradition to which jnana and karma are related and devotionaltradition to which bhakti belongs. The former has kept a very negativeviewpoint or attitude on desire, so it has preached to renounce all kindsof desire completely. But the viewpoint of the latter on desire is notnegative. Because it tries to reach God through concentrating emotionalfeeling on God extremely and emotion is closely related to desire. Desirehere is not a secular but a purified desire. By this analyzation, this articleconcludes that bhakti has the goal of removing egoism in common withjnana and karma yoga but each yoga approaches differently. Bhakti is theway to make a devotee’s emotion, in which his strong desire toward Godis involved, concentrate on God as a meditating point, forget his ego andultimately experience God. Therefore we can say that emotion in bhaktiis the means to reach the highest level of religious goal.
