동화 『강아지똥』의 그림책으로의 변용에 따른 의미 변화 고찰 (A Study on Modification into Animation of the Children’s Story, Doggy Poo)

초록

이 논문은 한국 아동문학의 정전(正典)으로서의 위상을 갖고 있는 「강아지똥」에 대해, 그동안의 평가가 원작동화와 그림책에 구분 없이 적용되어 온 것에 문제점을 느끼고, 각 텍스트를 ‘서사구조’, ‘인물’, ‘주제’의 측면에서 면밀히 분석해봄으로써 그 차이를 탐색하고, 이로 인해 원작의 의미와 가치가 그림책에서 어떻게 달라졌는가를 확인하기 위해 쓰였다.
‘서사구조’의 경우, 그림책에서는 도입부의 중심 상황이 달라지고, 암시적 의미의 ‘겨울’이 작품의 중반까지 표현되지 않았으며, 작품의 주제와 직결된 ‘별밤’의 장면이 삭제되고, 이야기의 중요한 분기점이 되는 강아지똥의 ‘겨울잠’도 생략되었고, 등장인물들이 강아지똥의 성격 변화에 별다른 영향을 주지 못하는 등 작품의 입체적이고 극적인 요소들이 약화되거나 사라진 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
‘인물’의 경우는 원작에서 활달하고 적극적이며 성격의 발전을 보여준 강아지똥이 그림책에서는 시종일관 감상적이고 침체된 성격에서 나아가지 못하였고, 강아지똥과 가장 동일시되고 강아지똥에게 삶의 지표를 남긴 ‘흙덩이’가 원작과 달리 특별한 존재로서의 위상을 갖지 못하였으며, ‘참새’와 ‘엄마’ 닭의 공격적이고 부정적인 성향이 약화됨으로써 극적인 효과가 반감된 것으로 파악하였다. 또한, 원작에서 ‘꽃’은 강아지똥에게 ‘별’과 동일한 것으로 민들레와의 결합이 서로의 간절한 요구에 의한 것인 반면, 그림책에서는 ‘별’의 의미도 상실되고 민들레가 일방적으로 강아지똥에게 거름이 되어줄 것을 요구함으로써 원작에서 강아지똥의 꿈의 실현을 돕는 조력자로서의 민들레의 성격이 그림책에서는 전혀 다르게 변형된 것을 확인하였다.
‘주제’의 경우, 원작에서는 세상에서 가장 하찮은 존재인 강아지똥이 성숙의 과정을 거쳐 역시 ‘낮은’ 존재인 민들레와 결합함으로써 ‘별’이 되는 꿈을 실현한다는 것이 이야기의 핵심이라면, 그림책에서는 ‘꽃’과 ‘별’이 무관한 관계가 되고 꽃을 피우는 주체가 강아지똥이 아닌 ‘민들레’가 됨으로써 거름이 되는 강아지똥의 행위가 ‘자기희생’ 정도의 의미에 머문 것으로 파악하였다.
선행 연구와 비교할 때, 부족하나마 이 글이 연구대상을 원작동화와 그림책으로 한정하여 두 텍스트를 집중적으로 비교 분석한 최초의 논문이며, 분석 결과를 근거로 원작의 본래의 의미가 그림책에서 어떻게 달라졌으며 무엇이 문제인가를 짚어냈다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This paper is to written to explore each difference through analyzing text from various angles like as ‘epic structure’, ‘character’, ‘theme’ and to confirm how the meaning and value of the original work by its difference are changed, after finding the problem that the evaluation about Doggy Poo as the core of the Korean children culture until now is applied without distinction of the original children’s story and the picture book.
In case of ‘epic structure’, this paper confirms that the stereoscopic and dramatic factors of the original work are mostly disappeared in the picture book. That is, the main situation of the introduction is changed, ‘winter’ of a suggestive meaning is not expressed until the middle of the book and the scene ‘a starlit night’ is edited out. Also the crucial junction of the story, the ‘hibernation’ of Doggy Poo is omitted and characters do not affect the personality changes of Doggy Poo.
In terms of ‘character’, this paper examines some factors; Doggy Poo continues to maintain the emotional and depressed personality in the picture book, while Doggy Poo in the original work shows the development of outgoing and active personality. ‘Clod’, which is closely identified with Doggy Poo and leaves the life index for it, does not have the status as the special being unlike the original work. The dramatic effect is diminishing by attenuating negative personalities of ‘sparrow’ and ‘mommy hen’. Moreover, while the ‘flower’ for Doggy Poo in the original work is the same with ‘star’ and the combination with dandelion is made by the earnest demand each other, the personality of dandelion as the helper of accomplishing the dream of Doggy Poo in the original work is completely transformed in the picture book because the meaning of the star in the picture book disappears and the dandelion asks for being manure to Doggy Poo unilaterally.
In case of ‘theme’, in the original work, the key point of the story is that the Doggy Poo, the trivial existence in the world, accomplishes the dream of being a ‘star’ through the progress of maturity by combination with dandelion, the ‘low’ existence, as well. On the other hand, this paper, in the picture book, grasped that the act of Doggy Poo to be the manure has only the meaning of ‘self-sacrifice’ because ‘flower’ becomes irrelevant to ‘star’ and the dandelion, not Doggy Poo, becomes the subject to bloom.
Compared with the previous studies, the significant meaning of this paper is the first one which confines the object of study to the original children’s story and the picture book, and then compares and analyses each text intensively. Another meaning is that it pinpoints how the primary meaning of the original work is changed in the picture book and what is the problem, through the detailed comparison.
