Our inner life is not free from trauma. Psychosis is a desperate pursuit for the stifled truth and for the shattered sense of self. The psychotherapist participates in this tense and distorted process through contacting the client's signal of pain and dread (and so becoming the pain and dread), with his own elements of potential madness. Otherwise, he cannot find the way to communicate with the client or the spot to meet the truth. This journey requires a deep understanding and cogitation on the psychotic dynamic and process. This study explores the psychotic process, not from the diagnostic and statistical view that classifies psychosis by its symptoms, but from the Modern Psychoanalytic perspective, which has strived to 'understand' the process behind the symptoms. With a brief history of the Modern Psychoanalytic search for the dynamics of psychosis, a question is probed whether this quest for the psychosis will ever allow us to understand the deep nature of our own as well as the psychotic mind. Searching and confronting our innermost area is not only a spiritual pilgrimage but also a process that releases us from the prejudice and fear of the psychosis and leads us to help clients better. Major psychotic processes are investigated as well: the psychotic self as experienced as a disaster and its feeling of annihilation reflected by dreams and screams; the psychotic self split by projective identification and failure of containing; the psychotic self denuded through emptying experiences and their meanings, and the fragmented self through destructive attacks on the linking; rebirth of the delusional self through omnipotence fantasy and the paranoid process. Clinical vignettes are given to illustrate the underlying dynamics. Some more ideas on therapeutic implications and pastoral care are discussed to deepen the thoughts on this issue.
