여성-민중, 선언 - 『또하나의문화』와 고정희 (Female-the people, Declaration)

초록

한국문학사의 1980년대를 현재적 관점에서 다시 읽는 일은 당대의 여성주의 운동과 여성문학의 의미를 재해석하는 작업과 긴밀히 연결되어 있다. 한국사회에서 80년대가 차지하는 위상을 생각할 때, 당대의 문학사에서 배제되거나 생략되었던 ‘여성’이라는 렌즈를 겹쳐 읽는 것이야말로 기록된 역사를 재평가하고 재구성할 수 있는 가장 급진적이고도 근본적인 방식일 것이기 때문이다. 중국의 천안문 사건, 동유럽 사회주의권의 붕괴, 소련 해체 등 일련의 세계사적 사태의 발생과 그 사태를 예비하는 시대로서의 80년대는 정치적 역동의 시대이다. 이와 동시에 ‘광주’, ‘민중’, ‘민주’ 등과 밀접하게 연결되는 국내 민주화운동의 맥락은 80년대를 향한 재해석을 곧 우리 사회의 ‘시민’과 ‘인간’의 의미를 되묻는 일과 등치시키는 중요한 쟁점이다.
역사의 주체로 호명되었던 ‘민중’과 그들이 서 있던 ‘광장’의 얼굴이 공공연히 남성의 얼굴을 하고 있었다는 선행 연구들의 기본적인 문제의식은 이러한 맥락에서 더욱 적극적으로 지속될 필요가 있다. 이 논문이 ‘광장의 여성’을 대표하는 한 여성 시인을 소환하는 이유 역시 그와 무관하지 않다. 80년대의 전범이었던 민중시 문법을 전유하여 ‘민중’이 아닌 ‘여성-민중’을 사유하려 했던 고정희의 삶과 작업은 당대 한국사회의 문학적·학술적 계보와 지형도를 제시한다. 또한 민중과 노동자 중심의 민주화 운동 속 모순과 역설 그 자체를 동력 삼아 앞으로 나아갔던 여성주의 운동의 복잡한 측면을 암시하는 중요한 텍스트이기도 하다.
특히 고정희는 창간호부터 함께 했던 『또 하나의 문화』 동인들과 무크 운동을 지속했던 이력이 있다. 그는 『또 하나의 문화』를 통해 여성주의적 문제의식을 ‘활자 운동’으로 본격 활용한 시인 중 한 명이다. 이 논문은 동인들에게 『또 하나의 문화』가 일종의 언어 운동의 장(場)으로서 기능했다는 사실에 주안점을 두고, 출간된 시집이나 산문집과는 별개의 맥락에서 『또 하나의 문화』 기획에 실린 고정희의 텍스트만을 변별해내어 주목한다. 시인 고정희가 여성주의적 ‘선언’이라는 맥락에서 여성 기호를 활용한 바를 살피고, 기호와 지시 대상 간의 근본적인 ‘불일치’를 하위주체들의 혁명적 동력으로 이해한 에티엔 발리바르의 통찰에 이를 대입하여, 시인의 발화를 독해한다. 이러한 작업은 언표와 실천 간의 괴리를 근거지 삼는 여성주의 운동의 언어적 역량과 가능성을 탐색하는 일이 될 수 있다.

영어초록

Reading the 1980s of Korean literary history again from the current point of view, is closely related to the work of re-interpreting the meaning of feminist movement and the female literature of the time. In the literary history of 80s, the viewpoint that considers 'female' was either excluded or left out. Thus, considering the status that the 80s holds within the Korean society, reading it from the viewpoint that takes 'female' into consideration is the most radical and fundamental way to re-evaluate and re-organize the documented history. The 80s is the era of political dynamics, as it either went through or prepared the series of world-historical events such as China's Tiananmen Incident, the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe or the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Simultaneously, the context of domestic democracy movement which was closely linked to "Kwangju," "the people," and "democracy," is an important discussion point that equals re-evaluation of 80s to questioning the meaning of 'citizen' and 'human being' in our society.
In the same context, it is important to actively keep raising the fundamental awareness of the fact that 'the people' who were indicated as a main body of history and 'the square' that 'the people' stood, were openly considered as male. This was also raised in the previous studies as an issue. This article deals with one female poet whose name is 'Ko Jeong-hee' who represents 'a woman who stands in 'the square'' in the same sense. Life itself and the work of Ko Jeong-hee represents her effort to speculate 'Female-the people' instead of mere 'the people' by possessing exclusively, the grammar of the people poem, which was a war criminal in the 80's. In doing so, her life and work became an important text of feminist movement which presents literary/academic genealogy and topographic map of Korean society of that time, and moved forward with the irony and paradox within the democracy movement that was centered around the people and the laborer.
Specifically, Ko Jeong-hee proceeded the Mook movement with members of coterie magazine named 'Another Culture' from the first issue. She was also one of the poets that utilized feminist issue officially as 'typography movement' by participating in 'Another Culture'. This article focuses on the fact that the coterie magazine 'Another Culture' functioned as a venue of linguistic movement among members of the magazine, and also pays attention to her work which was featured in 'Another Culture special' in a separate context from her other books of poetry or essays. This article evaluates how Ko Jeong-hee, as a poet, utilized female signifier in the context of feminist 'declaration', and applies it to the insight of Étienne Balibar who considered fundamental 'inconsistency' between the signifier and the signified as revolutionary motivation of subordinate subjects. By doing so, the report reads the poet's poetical experiment thoroughly. Ultimately, it could lead to exploration of linguistic capabilities and possibilities of feminist movement which is based on the gap between the statement and the action.
