초록

In 1588, the third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatsho (bsod nams rgya mtsho, 1543-1588), who was the highest monk of the Drepung('bras spungs) Monastery, the most important monastery of the Gelukpa sect, died in Inner Mongolia. At the invitation of Altan Khan (1507-1582) of the Tümed of Mongolia, Sonam Gyatsho had left Lhasa and went to Chabchiyal in the Kökönor in 1578. Altan Khan invited the Dalai Lama and offered lots of gifts, just as Khublai had previously done to Phagpa. the third Dalai Lama died in Inner Mongolia. After a while, the Gelukpa sect declared that he was reincarnated in Mongolia, not in Tibet. The new Dalai Lama was the great-grandson of Altan Khan, born in 1589, the year after the death of Sonam Gyatsho. The ascension of the Mongolian Dalai Lama is significant not only in the history of the Gelukpa but also in the history of entire Tibet. However, there are not many historical records left about him, so it is difficult to determine the nature of his period. Therefore, this paper examines the aspect of his reign through the records in diverse languages especially on the offerings he gave to Tibetan people and suggests that he was both “Qubilai” and “Phagpa” in Tibet.
