‘재난의 재현’이 ‘재현의 재난’이 될 때: 재현불가능성의 문화정치학 (When ‘the Representation of disaster’ becomes ‘a Disaster of Representation’: The Cultural Politics of the Unrepresentation)

초록

본 논문은 지난 세기 예술의 윤리학을 규정해 왔던 ‘재현불가능성(unrepresentability)’이라는 개념의 이론적 배경을 돌아보고, 이 개념이 9/11과 같은 동시대의 재난에 적용되어질 때 필연적으로 발생하는 문화정치적 문제들을 살펴본다. ‘재현불가능성’이란 유태인 학살과 같이 인간의 상상력을 능가하는 재난의 도래 앞에 재현의 주체가 선택하는 윤리적 태도로서의 재현의 포기, 혹은 그것의 환원을 의미하는 데, 이것은 ‘아우슈비츠 이후 시의 불가능성’을 한탄한 아도르노의 경구 등을 통해 요약되어질 수 있다.
이 재현불가능성은, 예를 들어, 클로드 랑즈만이 장편 다큐멘터리 <쇼아 Shoah>(1985)에서 보여준 비재현의 전략, 수잔 손탁이 사진에 대한 그녀의 유명한 고찰에서 타인의 고통에 대한 사진적 재현을 “양심의 사각(a dead zone of conscience)”에서 자행된 윤리적 범죄라 지칭한 점, 혹은 9/11 사태 이후 자국의 재난스러운 정치적 현실과 그 희생자들에 대한 시각적 재현을 반대하는 미국의 문화적 태도들 속에서 다시금 확인할 수 있다. 다시 말해 이제 유태인 학살이나 9/11사태와 같이 상상력과 이성의 임계치를 넘어서는 재난의 도래 앞에서 시각예술의 감각성과 형식성은 금기(taboo)의 조건이 되며, 따라서 윤리라는 보다 상위의 개념 아래 귀속되고 관리되어야 한다는 것이 오늘날 시각예술의 윤리학을 규정하는 하나의 커다란 강박이 된 것이다.
본 논문은 이러한 문화적 강박을 야기하는 재현불가능성의 이론적, 철학적 근거를 되짚어 보고, 이러한 강박이 동시대의 문화, 정치적 영역에 끼친 부정적 영향의 구체적 사례들을 분석해 보며, 이를 통해 재현불가능성에 대한 논리적 반론을 모색하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper explores the notion of ‘the unrepresentability’ that had once outlined the ethical role of art in the previous century, and how this unrepresentation has influenced our understanding of contemporary art dealing with disasters of our own time.
As Theodor W. Adorno aptly summarizes in his literary account, “to write a poem after Auschwitz is barbaric and (…) impossible,” the unrepresentation means a renouncement of the representational image or its radical reduction in art as an ethical gesture. It comes into practice when disasters in question appear too monstrous to be comprehended, spoken of, or represented – the sublime events that cannot be understood through any languages or any images. But to an extent, it also creates a dilemma in visual art, given that the unrepresentation complicates the nature of visual art itself anchored in visual communication, the communication through visual means.
A great deal of art, intellectual thought, and cultural phenomenon revolve around this notion of unrepresentation: Claude Lanzmann’s Shoah (1985) - a nine hour long Holocaust documentary that contains no visual spectacle of Jewish victims, Susan Sontag’s moral claim on prohibiting images of others in pain, and the American public’s anxiety of recounting the visual spectacles of 9/11 in media and art are some examples illustrating the double-edged nature of the unrepresentation. As these examples suggest, the proponents of unrepresentation find the visual images of catastrophes and human suffering irresponsible or even abominable, and thus, they are sometimes obsessed with this taboo of the unrepresentation that could eventually bring a decline into contemporary visual culture.
This paper first reviews the theoretical grounds of the unrepresentation, then analyzes the notion with some recent case studies that show the negative sides of this moral request, and finally deconstructs it through the logical questions articulated in recent ethical thoughts on art and culture.
