백석 시의 마을과 노인의 의미 연구 (1) - 정주(定州), 몰락을 견딘 구제의 땅 (A Study on, The Elders and Village in Baekseok’s Poetry - Jeongju of Pyeonganbuk Province, a land of salvation that endured its downfall)

초록

이 연구는 백석의 시에서 공통적으로 나타나는 특징으로, 사라져가는 것에 대한 시인의 관심에 주목하였고, 이러한 그의 관심이 어떤 사유에서 기인했는지를 밝히고자 했다. 이에 백석 시의 마을과 노인의 긴밀한 상관성을 파악하는 것이 최우선의 과제라고 판단했다. 마을은 백석의 시에서 주된 공간적 배경으로 등장하고, 그 마을 공동체의 중심에는 할머니와 할아버지가 자리한다. 이때 마을은 “우리 말로 된 옛 이름”을 간직한 곳이라는 상징성을 지닌다. 할머니와 할아버지는 옛 이름을 간직한 마을에 전해지는 오래된 이야기와 노래를 기억하고 전달해주는 사람들이다. 이들은 마을의 삶에 있어 중요한 버팀목이면서, 마을의 아이와 구성원들이 올곧게 살아가도록 보살피고 돕는 조력자이기도 하다. 그러나 이들은 오래된 이야기와 풍습과 말과 함께 사라질 운명에 처한 존재이고, 이들의 사라짐은 한 종족의 문화 및 언어의 멸절을 의미한다는 점에서 심각하다. 할머니와 할아버지 명칭은 그 어원에 상징적으로 사라져가는 의미를 포함한다. 특히, 평북 사투리에서 할머니와 할아버지를 뜻하는 큰마니와 큰아바지는 할머니와 할아버지의 어원에서 ‘한’에 담긴 ‘크다’, ‘밝다’, ‘높다’ 등과 같은 의미가 남아있다는 흔적을 보여준다.
한편 백석의 초기 단편소설은 노인의 몰락이 곧 마을의 몰락과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있음을 드러내면서, 몰락의 이야기를 비장하게 서사화한다. 이 작품에서 마을과 마을에서 살아가는 존재들이 어떻게 그 회복과 재생을 이룰 수 있는지에 대한 질문을 던져볼 수 있다. 이 동화적 세계에 담긴 몰락의 서사는 세상의 가장 비극적인 울음을 떠메고 가는 노인 인물을 통해서 그 뒤에 남겨진 이야기와 새로운 세상을 열어가는 문제를 고민하게 한다. 옛 이야기와 이름을 간직한 마을과 땅을 배경으로 하는 백석의 시편들은 옛것과 옛사람의 가치를 새롭게 발견하고, 지금 ‘나’의 구제와 ‘옛사람’의 구제가 긴밀하게 맞물려 있는 장면들을 보여준다. 백석의 시 세계는 ‘옛’에 담긴 정신과 창조적 힘을 탐색하게 한다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다.

영어초록

This study is a common feature in Baekseok's poetry, and focused on his interest in disappearing, and tried to reveal why his interest was caused. Accordingly, it was judged that the top priority was to understand the close correlation between the village and the elderly in Baekseok’s poetry. The village appears as the main spatial background in Baekseok's poem, and grandmother and grandfather are located in the center of the village community. At this time, the village has the symbolism of being a place that retains the "old name in our language." Grandmothers and grandfathers are people who remember and deliver old stories and songs told in villages with old names. They are important supports in the life of the village and are also assistants who take care of and help the children and members of the village live upright. However, they are doomed to disappear with old stories, customs and words, and their disappearance is serious in that it means the destruction of a tribe's culture and language. The names of grandmothers and grandfathers include the symbolic disappearance of the etymology. In particular, in the Pyeongbuk dialect, "big mother" and "big father", show traces of meaning such as "big," "bright," and "high" contained in "Han한-(할)" in the etymology of ‘할머니’ and ‘할아버지’ referring to the Korean vocabulary meaning grandmother and grandfather.
Meanwhile, Baekseok's early short stories reveal that the fall of the old man is closely connected to the fall of the village, and narrates the story of the fall in a solemn manner. In this work, we can ask the question of how the village and its existence can achieve its recovery and regeneration. The narrative of the downfall contained in this fairy tale world makes us think about the story left behind and the problem of opening a new world through the elderly character who is carrying the most tragic crying in the world. Baekseok's poetry, set in villages and lands with old stories and names, newly discover the values of the old and the old, and now show scenes in which the salvation of "I" and the salvation of "the old" are closely linked. Baekseok's poetry world is important in that it allows him to explore the spirit and creative power contained in the "old."
