초록

인도에서 금강승(Vajrayāna)이라는 후기밀교의 정체성이 확고하게 자리 잡은 이후, 밀교의 교리적 체계화가 정점에 이르는 10세기 전후로 많은 밀교사상가들은 인도불교 내의 여타 전통들과 비교해 만뜨라의 교리(Mantranaya, 진언이취)가 지니는 우월성을 주석이나 독립된 저작을 통해서 기술하고 있다. 본고는 인도는 물론 티베트에도 큰 영향을 미친 대성취자(mahāsiddha) 계보 중의 중요인물 중 한명인 아드바야바즈라(Advayavajra)가 전하는 밀교의 위상과 교의 해석을 그의 저작을 통해서 살펴보고자 한다.
그의 후대 영향력을 증명하듯, 인도찬술문헌과 티베트역 혹은 티베트 사료에서 그는 마이뜨레야나타(Maitreyanātha), 마이뜨리빠(Maitrīpa), 마이뜨레야굽따(Maitreyagupta), 아바두따(Avadhūta) 등의 수많은 이명으로 불린다. 그는 브라민 가문에서 태어나 정통 브라만교의 교리에 따라 교육을 받았고, 다양한 인도의 사상을 수학한다. 그러는 가운데 불교의 다양한 교리를 공부한그는 불교 승려로서 출가하게 되고, 결국 밀교 전통 안에서 대성취자의한 명으로서 수많은 저술을 남겼다. 이렇게 다양한 인도 종교의 교리를두루 섭렵했던 그의 성장 배경은 저작 안에서도 그대로 드러나는데, 특히, 밀교의 교리를 설명할 때 불교뿐만이 아니라 힌두 전통의 다양한 경전과논서들을 자유롭게 인용하는 특징을 보인다. 그렇기 때문에 그의 저작들은 그가 활동하던 시기의 사상가들이 바라본 불교와 비불교의 교의적 차별성에 대한 평가를 엿볼 수 있는 것은 물론, 그러한 평가를 바탕으로 밀교의 특별함을 어떻게 해설해 내는지를 보여준다. 이를 위해 본고는 『땃뜨바라뜨나발리(Tattvaratnāvalī)』라고 불리는 그의 저서를 통해 그가 어떤 방식으로 인도불교에 속한 제학파의 특징을 정리하고 그 속에서 진언이취 혹은 금강승이 지니는 위상을 천명하는 지를 살펴보고자 한다. 더불어 저작 속에서 인용되는 다양한 문헌적 전거를 탐색하고자 하는데, 이는 우리에게 밀교 전통 내에서 특정한 해석 전통이 전승되어 오는 자취를 더듬어 갈 수 있는 기회를 마련해 줄 것이다.

영어초록

Once the later period of Tantric Buddhism solidified its identity as Vajrayāna in India, around the 10th century, when the systematization of esoteric doctrines reached its peak, many esoteric scholars described the superiority of the doctrine of mantras(Mantranaya) compared to other traditions within Indian Buddhism through commentaries or independent works.
This paper examines the characteristics of the mantranaya system, as presented by Advayavajra in his doxography, which aimed to highlight the unique and superior position of Mantranaya/Vajrayāna within the broader Buddhist landscape of his time. Since he had a significant influence not only in India but also in Tibet, he is mentioned under numerous aliases in Indian hagiographical texts, Tibetan translations, and Tibetan historical records, such as Maitreyanatha, Maitrīpa, Maitreyagupta, and Avadhūta.
Born into a Brahmin family, Advayavajra received education in orthodox Brahmanic doctrines but later converted to Buddhism and left behind numerous writings as an adept in the Tantric tradition. This diverse religious background is reflected in his works, as he freely cites various Hindu scriptures and treatises in addition to Buddhist texts when explaining esoteric doctrines. Therefore, his works offer insights into how Tantric commentators and thinkers evaluated the doctrinal differences between Buddhism and non-Buddhist traditions, and how they used those evaluations to explain the distinctiveness of Tantric Buddhism.
To achieve this objective, this paper delves into Advayavajra´s seminal work, the Tattvaratnāvalī, to examine the characteristics of the philosophical schools he defines and organizes within Indian Buddhism. It specifically analyzes the doctrines of mantra(Mantranaya) within these schools. By meticulously examining the diverse textual references cited in this work, the paper unveils the trajectory of this interpretive tradition and its transmission across generations. This in-depth analysis sheds light on Advayavajra´s unique contribution to the understanding of Mantranaya and its significance within the broader Buddhist landscape.
