초록

Nihon-Syokokumin-Bunko (A Series of Japanese Children’s Literature) edited by YAMAMOTO Yuzo is a 16 volumes series, the first of which - Kokoro-ni-Taiyo-wo-Mote (Have Sun in Your Mind) written by Yamamoto - was published in November 1935 and was completed in August 1937 with Kimitachi-wa-Dou-Ikiruka (How Do You Live?) written by YOSHINO Genzaburo.
This series was organized by Yamamoto Yuzo, a playwright, and was published with the help of SATO Giryo at Shinchosha. It was Shinchosha’s first attempt at publishing children’s books. It is said that Yamamoto put a lot of thoughtful preparation into publishing the series, getting advice from KIKUCHI Kan, among others, and making Yoshino Genzaburo and YOSHIDA Kinetaro its editors. Although its main readers were supposed to range from the higher grades in primary school to junior high school children, its significance and unique identity was due to the fact that the series was neither a purely literary series nor a set of encyclopaedias as had been previously published but a self contained and comprehensive series with its own ethics and philosophical identity aimed at cultivating young people’s personalities and building their thinking processes.
Generally the series has been lauded as “a symbol of resistance spirit in the period” (*1), “the embodiment of conscientious publication during the war” (*2) and “It should be highly valued for successfully conveying humanism from an international point of view”(*3), there are still some gaps in our knowledge concerning the background to the birth of the plan and the editing process, which will need to be looked into further. This is particularly true when one considers Yamamoto Yuzo, the organizer, whose involvement and subsequently profound participation in children’s literature and culture of the period - from “An Instructive outline concerning the improvement of children’s reading materials” in 1938 to the foundation and inception of Nihon- Syokokumin-Bunka-Kyokai (Japan children (=shokokumin) culture association) in 1941 - was triggered by the series. He had been a school friend of the Prime Minister KONOE Fumimaro, and they had maintained a close friendship ever since, so he was arrested during this period for offering funds to the Communist Party. So the question remains as to what role he actually played in the control and organization of children’s culture groups under the political dynamics of that unstable period.
This study considers the role played by Yamamoto Yuzo in the formation of policy on children’s culture after 1938. As an the introduction to the study, this thesis examines Nihon-Syokokumin-Bunko and other related series in which Yamamoto began to be concerned with children’s literature.
