밀양 영남루 현판들의 서예미와 문화적 특성 (A Study on the Calligraphic Beauty and Cultural Characteristics of the Hanging Boards of Yeongnamnu Pavilion in Miryang)

초록

현재 보물 제147호로 지정되어 있는 밀양 영남루는 조선시대 密陽都護府의 객사에 속한 관영 누각으로 사신과 빈객을 접대하며, 주변 경치를 조망하면서 공적 연회를 하던 건물이다. 신라와 고려를 거쳐, 조선시대에서 오늘날까지 보존되어 온 영남루는 다른 동급 누각에서 찾아볼 수 없는 현판들이 많이 걸려 있다. 그 현판들의 서예미와 누정의 문화적 특성을 고찰하는 본 연구는 서예와 현판의 인문학적·학술적·문화예술사적 연구가 된다. 첫째, 영남루 외부(외변) 현판의 작가인 전문 서예가 3명, 즉 송하 조윤형, 귤산 이유원, 성파 하동주의 서예심미와 서예미를 고찰한다. 둘째, 영남루 내부 현판의 문구내용과 서체미를 고찰하고 그 문화적 특성을 밝힌다.
밀양의 영남루는 낙동강 수로와 조선통신사가 지나가는 길목으로 교통의 요지였으며, 특히 자연경관이 뛰어나 관료와 명사들이 애호하는 逍遙와 조망의 공간이었다. 영남루의 현판들은 여러 방면의 인사들과 여러 서체들이 공존하는 서예 예술의 현장이 되고 있으며, 그 현판들의 인문학적 가치와 전통 문화적 가치가 공존하고 있다. 사라져가는 전통문화가 살아 숨 쉬는 예술의 현장이요, 서예라는 기예가 뚜렷한 ‘현판예술’의 한 장르로 現示되고 있다.
밀양 영남루는 진주 촉석루와 평양 부벽루에 대하여, 그 규모와 현판 문화를 비교하면 숫자적으로나 내용적으로 볼 때 우수하며, 영남루 현판들의 문화적 특성을 보유하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 또 영남루의 현판들은 서예미에 있어, 기교보다는 자연과 인간이 합일된 심미적 감수와 온유돈후한 유가미의 기상을 담고 있어 영남서예의 기상과 맥을 같이 한다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Miryang Yeongnamnu Pavilion, currently designated as Treasure 147, was one of the inns belonging to the local government of the Miryang region during the Joseon Dynasty. It was mainly used to welcome envoys and valuable guests and to hold public banquets while viewing the surrounding scenery. Yeongnamnu Pavilion has been preserved from Silla through Goryeo and Joseon to the present day, and it has many hanging boards that cannot be found in other pavilions. In this study, I investigated the calligraphic beauty of the hanging boards and the cultural characteristics of the pavilion, and that would be a humanistic, academic, cultural and artistic study of calligraphy and hanging boards. First, I examined the calligraphic beauty and calligraphy aesthetics of the three professional calligraphers who wrote the outside hanging boards of Yeongnamnu Pavilion, namely Songha Jo Yunhyeong, Gyulsan Lee Yuwon, and Seongpa Ha Dongju. Second, I clarified the cultural characteristics of Yeongnamnu Pavilion by investigating the meaning of the phrases and the beauty of calligraphic style of its inside hanging boards.
Yeongnamnu Pavilion in Miryang was a major transportation hub as it was located on the path of the Nakdong River waterway and the Joseon Missions to Japan. In addition, it was a space of rambling and viewing, loved by officials and celebrities because of its excellent natural scenery. The hanging boards of Yeongnamnu Pavilion are written by people from various fields and consist of various calligraphic scripts. Therefore, the humanities and traditional cultural values coexist on the hanging boards, that clearly demonstrates that the art of calligraphy can be a genre of ‘an art of hanging boards’.
Compared to Chokseoknu Pavilion in Jinju and Bubyeoknu Pavilion in Pyeongyang, Yeongnamnu Pavilion in Miryang is not only large, but also excellent in terms of number and contents of the hanging boards. It can be said that the hanging boards of Yeongnamnu Pavilion are in harmony with the spirit of calligraphy in Yeongnam region, as they contain the aesthetic sensation of united nature and humans and the gentle and sincere spirit of Confucian aesthetics rather than craftsmanship.
