高麗末期 儒家 士大夫 知識人들의 佛敎的 內面意識에 관한 硏究 : 李穡과 주변 인물들 및 元天錫의 詩文을 중심으로 (A Study on the Buddhist Inner Consciousness of the Confucian “Sadaebu (Scholar-officials)” Intellectuals of the Late Goryeo Period - Focusing on the Poetry of Lee Saek and His Co-workers and Won Cheon)

초록

본고에서는 고려말기 사대부 층의 관료문인들 중 이색과 그 주변 인사들 그리고 재야 지식인 중 대표적 인물인 원천석을 사례로 하여, 그들의 詩文들을 통해 불교적 내면의식의 세계에 대해 고찰하였다. 주지하듯이 성리학 이념에 투철했던 麗末 儒家들은 당시 불교에 대해 더욱 적극적으로 비판하고 배척하는 모습을 보였다. 그러나 그들의 의식 한편에는 전통 종교인 불교의 인생관이나 세계관의 편린들이 여전히 뿌리깊이 남아 있었다. 그렇듯 불교에 대한 이중적 대응의 조류 속에서, 그들은 儒․佛을 넘나드는 와중에 파생되는 정신적 간극으로 인해 갈등하는 모습을 보이기도 했다. 또한 불교에 대처하는 양상에 있어, 각기의 주관이나 개성에 따라 미묘한 편차를 드러내기도 하였다. 그와 같은 정황에 따른 내면의식의 波動이 詩文 속에 다채롭게 표출되어 있기에, 상호 대비적인 면에 주의를 기울이면서 관련 작품실제의 심층적 면면들에 대해 좀 더 밀도 있게 탐구해보고자 하였다.
儒者들의 불교 관련 작품들이 대개 그렇듯, 이색에 있어서도 승려들과의 활발한 교류 속에 그들에 대한 외경심이나 사찰 풍광에 대한 정서 등을 표출한 경우가 많다. 그러나 역시 사상적 本領이 성리학이었던 까닭에, 불교를 포용하는 자세를 취하면서도 한편으론 양자 간의 차이와 거리를 분명히 하려 하였고, 그러면서도 다른 한편으론 세속적 삶의 고뇌를 불교의 초월적 구원의 방도로써 해소하려는, 복합적이고도 이율배반적인 이중적 의식구조를 지니고 있었다. 본고에서는 이색과 그 주변 인사들 중 이숭인, 김구용, 정몽주 등의 몇몇 작품들을 통해 그러한 다변적인 내면의식이 작품 속에 어떻게 표출되고 있으며, 또한 그들 서로 간에 사상적으로나 정서적으로 어떤 차이점이 있는지에 대해 고찰하였다.
아울러 그들 제도권 인사들과의 대비적인 견지에서, 당시의 대표적 재야인사였던 원천석의 불교에 대한 시각과 자세에 대해 함께 다루어 보았다. 그는 일찍 出仕의 뜻을 접긴 했지만 儒者로서의 정체성을 견지하는 한편으로, 好佛의 성향을 지니고 있었다는 점에서 앞서의 인물들과 상통하는 면이 있다. 그러나 그들에 비해 단순한 好佛이 아닌 돈독한 신앙적 자세를 보였다는 점에서 뚜렷한 변별성을 보인다. 그의 그러한 면모는 禪的 어투나 표현이 빈번하게 사용된 일부 작품들 속에 두드러지게 나타나 있다.

영어초록

This study discussed the world of Buddhist inner consciousness with Lee Saek and people around him, of the bureaucrat literary people in the noble class and Won Cheon-seok, a representative figure of the intellectuals out of office in the late Goryeo Kingdom period, through their poetry and prose. As well known, Confucian school in the late Goryo Kingdom period, who was enthusiastic about the Neo-Confucianist ideology criticized and excluded Buddhism of the times more actively. However, the fragments of the view of life or the world in the traditional religion, Buddhism still remained deep on one side of their consciousness. Like this, in the double trend toward Buddhism, they had conflicts, too, because of the psychological gap derived from their oscillation between Confucianism and Buddhism. In addition, in the aspect of their treatment of Buddhism, they showed subtle deviation according to their subjectivity or personality. Since the wave of their inner consciousness according to such a context are expressed in their poetry and prose in various ways, this study would more faithfully explore the in-depth aspects of the actual works related, paying attention to the aspect of contrast.
Like Confucian scholars’ Buddhism-related works in general, Yi Saek often expressed his awe of monks or emotions about the scenery of Buddhist temples in his vigorous exchanges with them. However, since his ideas were based on Neo-Confucianism, he would clarify the difference and distance between the two on one hand and taking an attitude of embracing Buddhism, he had the complex, antinomic structure of double consciousness, in which he would solve the worldly anguish of life through the transcendental salvation of Buddhism on the other hand. This study discussed the way in which such multilateral inner consciousness was expressed through several works by Yi Saek and the people around him, including Lee Sung-in, Kim Gu-young and Jeong Mong-ju and the ideological and emotional differences among them.
In addition, on a standpoint in contrast to these figures in the established institutions, this study dealt with Won Cheon-seok, the representative opposition personage of the times, concerning his view and attitude toward Buddhism, as well. Although he gave up on his willingness to enter the government services, early, he held fast to the identity as a Confucian scholar, while he tended to protect Buddhism. In this sense, he shares some points in common with the above-mentioned figures. However, in that he showed a strong religious stance, instead of simple protection of Buddhism, when compared to them, he shows a clear distinction. This appears noticeably in several works in which wordings or expressions of Zen Buddhism were frequently used.
