일제말기 문학인들의 대일 협력 유형과 의미 (Forms and Meanings of Writers' Collaboration with Japan during the 1940s)

초록

이 연구는 일제 말기 문학을 협력과 저항이라는 정치적 태도 및 효과의 측면에서 고찰하기 위한 방법론적 원칙을 새롭게 규명하기 위한 것이다. 이 논문은 ‘친일문학’에 대한 개념 문제에서부터 유형 분석 문제, 현상론적 분석과 가치론적 평가를 통합하는 문제 등을 포괄적으로 논의하면서도 논쟁적인 문제들을 예각적으로 다룸으로써 연구의 시각을 명확히 하고자 했다.
‘친일문학’은 한국현대문학의 중요한 연구 분야를 이루지만 아직까지 개념에 대한 성찰을 비롯한 체계적인 연구 방법 및 시각이 마련되어 있지 못한 상태다. 최근에는 오리엔탈리즘론이나 포스트콜로니얼리즘론이 한국현대문학 연구를 위한 방법론으로 활발하게 수용되는 양상을 빚으면서 에드워드 사이드나 호미 바바의 견해들, 일본적으로 재정립된 포스트콜로니얼리즘론들이 일제시대 한국문학을 둘러싼 상황이 충분치 못한 가운데 널리 적용되는 양상을 보이고 있지만 많은 문제점을 노출하고 있다.
이 논문은 이러한 문제의식에서 출발하여 일제말기 대일 협력 문제를 동기, 전개 양상, 이후의 수리 과정으로 나누어 살펴봄으로써 문제를 전체적으로 보면서 또한 분석적으로 볼 것을 제안하고 있다. 또한 이 가운데 가장 큰 주제를 형성하는 전개 양상에 대한 분석은 다른 분야가 아니라 문학 분야에 있어서의 대일협력이라는 점에 비추어 문필행위를 통한 협력 여부, 조선어와 일본어 선택 문제 등을 중시할 것을 제안하고 있다.
특히 일본어 창작 문제는 지금까지는 일본어로 쓴 문학이라고 해도 그 내용이나 주제에 따라 ‘친일’ 여부를 준별할 수 있다고 보는 관행이 있었음에 유의하면서 문학 매체로서 일본어를 선택하는 것 자체가 당시로서는 일종의 체제 협력의 의미를 지니고 있었음을 분명히 하고자 했다. 이러한 시각에 따르면 일제말기의 문학인들의 대일 협력은 단순히 내용상의 문제가 아니라 언어 선택의 문제를 수반하는 것이다.
나아가 이 논문은 1940년을 전후로 한 식민지 파시즘 체제 아래서 현실비판적인 태도를 명시적으로 드러내는 것이 불가능했다는 사실을 중시하면서 작품들, 비평들, 여타 산문들에 나타난 대일 협력적 포즈를 외면적인 태도 이상의, 심층적 수준에서 새롭게 볼 것을 제안하고 있다. 이것은 일제 말기의 작가와 작품을 당시에 주류를 형성하고 있는 것처럼 보이는 국민문학론 및 그 창작적 ‘실천’의 맥락을 넘어선 층위에서 분석할 것을 요구하는 것이다.
이 논문에서 특히 중요시하고자 한 것은 국민문학론을 선도하거나 이에 적극적으로 협력한 사람들이 아니라 협력과 저항의 틈새에서 고민하면서 그 자신의 문학적 가치를 보존하고자 한 작가들이다. 이들은 특히 최근 들어 협력에 귀착한 작가들로 분류되곤 하지만 그러한 협력적인 포즈의 이면에는 만만치 않은 문제의식이 담겨 있는 경우가 많다. 이들은 ‘사소설’의 환유적 기법을 활용하여 식민지 체제에 역설적인 비판을 가하거나, 일본어 소설을 쓰면서도 여러 환유적, 상징적 장치를 통해서 체제에 포섭되지 않는 정신의 가능성을 실험해 나갔다. 채만식, 이태준, 박태원, 이효석 같은 작가들의 이면에 대한 탐구는 한국문학을 정치 적인 것으로 밀어붙이는 분석적 시각에 대하여 ‘문학적’ 가치에 대한 고민과 실험이 일제말기의 야만적인 체제 아래서도 여전히 존재했음을 알 수 있게 해준다.

영어초록

This study aims to redefine a methodological principle in order to look into literature in the late Japanese colonial period through a political attitude represented by collaboration and resistance and its effect. Furthermore, the concept of “Pro-Japanese Literature,” an analysis of its pattern and phenomenology, and the value recognition will be comprehensively discussed, and controversial issues will be raised to clarify the viewpoint of this study.
“Pro-Japanese Literature” accounts for important part of modern Korean literature research, however, systematic research methodology involving the reflection of the concept and viewpoints has yet to come up. Recently, Orientalism or Post-colonialism are positively accepted as a method to examine modern Korean literature; on the other hand, opinions suggested by Edward Said and Homi Bhabha and Japanese Post-colonialism are widely applied due to the insufficient condition for the research of Korean literature in the colonized Korea. But they also contain numerous flaws.
Against this backdrop, this study divides the Pro-Japanese collaboration issue in the late Japanese colonial period into three parts such as the motif, the development and the acceptance in an attempt to look at the issue in a comprehensive and analytic way. Moreover, the analysis of the development, the main subject in this study, focuses on whether there were indications of Pro-Japanese collaboration in literature and whether writers chose Japanese or Korean to write.
In particular, the language choice did not matter so far, instead the contents or themes actually served as a tool to judge Pro-Japanese collaboration. Nevertheless, this study regards the choice of Japanese in literature meant Pro-Japanese collaboration at that time. Therefore, Pro-Japanese collaboration by writers in the late Japanese colonial period entails the issue of language choice not the issue of contents.
Taking a further step, this study pays attention to the fact that it was impossible to remain critical toward the reality under the colonial fascism around 1940 and proposes to take an in-depth look at indications of Pro-Japanese collaboration in novels, essays and proses. It demands to examine the writers and literature in the late period of Japanese rule beyond the Theory of National Literature and its creative “practice.” This study focuses on the writers struggling to retain the value of their works stuck between collaboration and resistance, not those who led the Theory of National Literature or actively participated in. Although they are often seen as Pro-Japanese collaborators recently, for the most part, their works have a critical mind on the other side. They made use of metonymy of “Shishousetsu (or I-novel)” to paradoxically criticize the colonial regime and experimented on the mentality free from the regime through symbolism and metonymy despite choosing Japanese to write. Against the analytic view that regards Korean Literature as political, it is possible to know that struggles and experiments on the value in “literature” existed in the late period of brutal Japanese rule by examining the other side of Chae Man-sik, Lee Tae-jun, Park Tae-won and Lee Hyo-seok.
