무신론적 과학주의의 근간이 되는 과학 이론들은 과연 완벽한가?: 현대 우주론과 진화론의 문제점과 한계들 (Are Scientific Theories as Bases of Atheistic Scientism Perfect?: Problems and Limitations of Contemporary Theories of Cosmology and Evolution)

초록

현대인들은 과학에 대해 맹목적인 신뢰를 두면서 종교를 미신으로 격하하는 분위기 속에서 살아가고 있다. 이러한 분위기는 과학이 모든 것을 설명해 줄 수 있다고 믿는 무신론적 과학주의로부터 발생되었는데, 이 주의는 현대의 주요 과학 이론들, 특히 우주론과 진화론에 기반하고 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 현대 우주론과 진화론의 약점들과 한계들을 살펴보고자 한다.
빅뱅 우주론은 1927년 이론적으로 처음 소개된 이후 현재까지 정설로 확립되었다. 그런데 이렇게 빅뱅을 통해 탄생한 우리의 우주에 생명체, 특히 인류가 생존하기 위해서는 ‘미세 조율된 필연적 생명체 생존 조건’을 갖추어야만 한다는 소위 ‘인류 원리’가 우주론의 핵심 내용으로 자리잡은 상태이다. 그러다 보니 무신론적 과학주의자들은 엄청난 수의 우주들 중에서 인류 원리를 만족하는 ‘하나의 우주가 우연히’ 발생했다는 ‘다중 우주론’을 주장하였다. 하지만 다중 우주의 존재는 관측을 통한 검증이 전혀 불가능하기 때문에, 이 이론은 실재적인 근거가 결여되어 있다는 비판에 직면해 있다.
진화론은 찰스 다윈 이래로 현재까지 생명과학의 근본 원리로서 받아들여져 오고 있다. 하지만 ‘한 종 내에서 다양한 변이가 생겨나는 단기간의 진화 과정’을 설명하는 ‘소진화’는 대단히 잘 설명되고 있는 반면에, ‘과거에 있었던 공통의 조상 종에서 새로운 후손 종들로의 진화 과정’을 설명하는 ‘대진화’는 현재까지도 다양한 이론들이 난립해 있는 상황이다. 그리고 생명체의 모든 진화 과정의 출발점인 첫 번째 생명체의 출현이 어떤 방식을 통해 이루어졌는가에 대해서는 많은 실험과 가설들이 존재해 왔음에도 불구하고 아직까지도 제대로 이해하지 못하고 있는 현실에 있다.
따라서 무신론적 과학주의의 근간이 되고 있는 현대 우주론과 진화론은 과학적으로 많은 약점과 한계를 지니고 있음을 우리는 알 수 있다. 현재 무신론적 과학주의의 근간이 되는 과학 이론들이 지닌 이러한 한계와 불완전성이 앞으로 과학과 종교가 서로 대화하고 상생하는 관계로 나아가는 데에 중요한 동력으로서 작용하게 될 것이라고 필자는 기대하는 바이다.

영어초록

Modern people live in an atmosphere of downgrading religion to superstition while blindly trusting science. This atmosphere arose from atheistic scientism, which believes that science can explain everything. This is based on modern scientific theories, especially cosmology and the theory of evolution. Therefore, in this article, I will try to point out their weaknesses and limitations by looking closely at modern theories of cosmology and evolution.
The Big Bang cosmology was first established theoretically in 1927 and has since been established as orthodox to date through various astronomical observations. However, the so-called ‘anthropic principle’ that we must have the condition of ‘fine-tuned condition for inevitable survival of life’ is necessary for the survival of life, especially human beings, in our universe born through the Big Bang. So, atheistic scientists have argued for ‘multiverse theory’ that ‘a universe happens by chance’, in a huge number of universes, satisfying the anthropic principle. However, because the existence of the multiverse is impossible to do physical verification through experiment/observation, the theory faces criticism that there is a ‘serious’ lack of physical/ realistic grounds.
Evolution has been accepted as the fundamental principle of life sciences since Charles Darwin, consisting of many factors such as population, mutation, and selection. However, ‘microevolution’ which explains the ‘short-term evolutionary process in which a variety of mutations occur within a species’ is very well explained from a molecular biology point of view, while ‘macroevolution’ which explains the ‘long-term evolutionary process by which species from a common ancestor become new descendant species’ is a situation in which various theories to the present time are in a state of confusion. And we still do not understand the mechanism of the emergence of the first life as the first starting point of all the evolutionary processes of life, although many experiments and hypotheses have existed since the Miller-Urey experiment in 1953.
Thus, we can see that contemporary theories of cosmology and evolution, which are two important theories as the basis of atheistic scientism, actually have many scientific weaknesses and limitations. Therefore, when trying to communicate with science, the Church seems to be the most wise attitude to take a proper distance from the details of science, while expressing deep interest in science itself. I expect that the limitations and incompleteness of scientific theories that are the basis of atheistic scientism will serve as an important driving force for science and religion to move forward in mutual dialogue and mutual relationship.
