초록

인간은 이야기를 통해 살아가는 ‘스토리텔링 애니멀(storytelling animal)’이라 할 수 있다. ‘스토리(story)’ 즉, 이야기는 단지 회람되는 무의미한 기표들의 연속이 아니다. 우리가 다양한 삶의 담론 속에서 주고받는 이야기는 사소하고 일상적인 것으로 여겨지기도 하지만, 사실은 이 사소한 이야기들이 우리 민족과 사람들의 문화적, 사회적 무의식을 구성하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 우리 삶의 구체적인 상황들은 매우 다양하고 복잡하다. 그래서 우리의 문화적, 사회적 무의식이 어느 하나의 의미를 갖는다고 말하거나 획일적으로 해석될 수도 없다. 이런 까닭에 우리 시대 사람들은 다양한 이야기들 속에서 가치와 의미를 찾는데 어려움을 겪을 수밖에 없고, 때로는 의미와 가치의 공백을 겪으며 살아가고 있다.
미국 실용주의 철학의 창시자인 찰스 S. 퍼스(Charles S. Peirce)의 기호학은 바로 이 정신적 공백의 시대와 포스트휴먼 시대를 위한 기호론적 함축성을 우리에게 제공한다. 또한 퍼스의 기호학적 개념을 받아들인 로버트 코링턴(Robert S. Corrington)이 제안하는 ‘해석자들의 공동체’는 스토리텔링 애니멀(storytelling animal)로서의 인간이 개인의 치유만으로는 해결되지 않는 정신적 공백을 매우고, 인간에 대한 새로운 이야기를 쓰기 시작한 인간-이후(Post-human)의 시대를 의미있게 살아갈 수 있는 대안을 마련하는데 있어 하나의 단초를 제시한다. 그리고 이러한 통찰은 우리의 이야기에서 시작하여 지구적으로 의미있는 해석과 이야기를 전개할 수 있는 기회 또한 제공할 수 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 실용주의자 퍼스에서 유래한 ‘해석체’와 ‘해석자들의 공동체’ 개념은 개인의 차원이 아니라, 사회적 수준에서 ‘의미’의 중요성과 해석이 시작되는 ‘이야기’의 차원이 무엇인지를 보여주기 때문이다.
이러한 전제 하에 본 논문에서는 먼저 퍼스의 기호학이 지닌 의미를 간략히 살펴보고, 여기서 유래한 해석자들의 공동체가 포스트휴먼시대를 사는 우리에게 주는 통찰과 이후 등장한 관계적, 집합적 공동체에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 마지막으로 대표적인 이야기 공동체이며, 해석자들의 공동체 중 하나인 교회공동체가 포스트휴먼 시대를 사는 우리에게 주는 의미를 탐구해보고자 한다.

영어초록

Human beings can be defined as ‘story-telling’ animals who live through narrative. Story is never a meaningless series or simple repetition. While usually seen as trivial and ordinary, stories, which we as social animals exchange through diverse forms of the discourse of everyday life in reality, constitute the basis of the social and cultural unconsciousness of people and nations. Given that the concrete situations and circumstances of our actual lives are very diverse, complex and multifaceted, one cannot say that this social and cultural unconsciousness can have a simple meaning or an monolithic interpretation. This is part of the reason why people often have difficulty in finding value and meaning among the various stories of life and, even worse, suffer from the vacuum of meaning and value.
The semiology by Charles Sanders Peirce, who is one of the founding fathers of American pragmatism or (in his term) pragmaticism, offers certain semiotic implications for the age of the spiritual vacuum and for the coming posthuman age. In particular, the notion of the community of interpreters, which Peirce introduced and Robert S. Corrington developed in his ecstatic naturalism, provides us with a clue to fill the spiritual vacuum and live meaningfully, that cannot be filled by personal healing programs, in the age of the post-humanity.
The concepts of ‘interpretant’ and ‘the community of interpreters,’ which are derived from the Peircean semiology, explore the importance of meaning not at a personal level but at social level and show that interpretation begins with storytelling. In this context, the insights from the notion of the community of interpreters offer a chance to unfold meaningful stories and interpretations at the global level from our personal stories.
Under such assumptions, this paper will sketch the implications of Peircean semiotics and then explore further implications of the Peircean idea of the community of interpreters, for the posthuman age. Furthermore, this paper will examine the potentiality of the relational community of the multiple. Lastly, this paper will investigate the meaning of the Church, which is the representative organization of a narrative community and one of the communities of interpreters living in the posthuman age.
