초록

필자는 동서 사상의 대화를 목적으로 서양의 20세기 형이상학적 철학인 화이트헤드(Alfred North Whitehead)의 과정철학(또는 유기체 철학)의 인간 영혼에 대한 이해와 유구한 역사를 자랑하는 동양 종교 불교의 영혼 이해를 비교학적인 관점에서 다룬다. 화이트헤드의 철학은 응용 분야에 따라 과학철학, 종교철학, 미학적 철학, 역사철학 등등으로 자기화 될 수 있는 일반성의 차원의 형이상학적 사상이고, 불교 사상은 알다시피 불교적 구원을 지지하기 위한 특수한 종교 철학이다. 그러나 두 사상이 동일한 주제를 다룰 때에는 비교내지는 대화가 충분히 가능할 것이다.
이 양 사상은 기존의 자기 전통의 실체주의(아리스토텔레스 전통과 브라만교 전통) 사상을 철저히 거부하고 새로운 과정 관계적 대안을 제시하여 새로운 역사적 지평을 열었다는 점에서 매우 유사한데, 필자는 이런 맥락에서 영혼에 관한 그들의 이해를 부각시켜 읽어 낸다. 즉 변화와 과정과 관계의 흐름 속에서 순간순간 달라지는 인간의 영혼이나 자아의 형태는 모두 특수한 방식으로 탈실체화를 지향하여 기저적인 자기 동일적 실체로서의 인간 영혼 또는 자아를 극구 부정한다. 이런 유사성은 이 글의 한 축을 이루며 그들 사이의 유사성이라고 할 만한 것을 적절히 표현해준다. 즉 ‘살아 있는 인격’이라는 전문 용어가 지시하는 화이트헤드의 인간 영혼과 ‘무아’(無我)로 일반인들에게까지 익숙하게 알려졌지만 그 문자적 의미로 인해 혼란을 발생시킬 수도 있는 불교의 인간 영혼은 모두 이런 의미로서 탈실체화된 인간 영혼들이다.
그럼에도 불구하고 필자가 더 주목하려는 것은 그것들 사이의 차이라고 할 수 있는데, 필자의 판단에 따르면, 각 사상은 자기 전통의 궤적 위에 서 있음으로서, 완전한 일치나 유사성만을 기대하는 것은 무리이며 우연의 소산물 이상은 기대하기 어렵다는 점에 주목한다. 필자는 이 문제를 (인격적) 동일성의 문제에서 확인하려고 했는데, 필자의 판단에 따르면, 불교 철학적 입장에서는 인격이나 영혼의 동일성을 철저히 거부하는 쪽으로만 일방적으로 나아가는 반면, 화이트헤드의 철학에서는 서양 철학답게 실체적 동일성을 극복하기 위해 상대적이고 관계적인 동일성을 구성할 수 있다는 점을 지적하고 화이트헤드 철학에서는 그 핵심적인 주역이 자연주의적으로 이해되는 신이라는 점을 간략히 제시하였다.
필자가 차이에 더 주목한다고 했던 것은 동양과 서양의 사상적 대화가 자기 전통을 더 보편화하기 위해 상대 전통의 진리들을 진지하게 고려하고 끌어들일 수 있다고 확신하기 때문이었다. 이 글과 관련시킨다면, 화이트헤드 사상가들은 불교가 신을 주장하지 않거나 영혼의 동일성을 부정하는 강력하고 타당한 이유들을 진지하게 고려하고 극복해 내는 방향으로 갈 수 있을 것이고, 불교는 화이트헤드 사상이 신을 주장하고 인격의 동일성을 여전히 추구하는 배후의 이유들을 진지하게 소화하고 극복해내는 방향을 지향하여 자기 전통들을 풍성하게 발전시키는 자극제로 삼을 수 있게 될 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to compare thoughts of the East and the ones of the West. For that, the writer deals with the understanding of Process Philosophy's human soul by Alfred North Whitehead (1886-1947), who is estimated one of the greatest metaphysicians in the 20th century, even in the entire western history, and Buddhist understanding on the same topic, which has been religiously oriented in its longtime history of the East, in a perspective of the comparative analysis. The Whitehead's philosophy can be well applied to natural science, religion, aesthetics, history, etc., as a metaphysical thought in general levels, whereas Buddhism, as well known, is kind of a religious philosophy, which advocates the Buddhist salvation. But it is expected that these two different thoughts can be comparable or corresponding each other when they focus on the same subject.
The writer understands that the two thoughts of human soul are quite similar in a sense, as the both thoroughly renounces their formerly traditional substantialism and explore an process-relational alternative to open new page of philosophy. In this respect, the writer focus on their comprehension on souls. That is, they are in a passage of change, process, and relation and could be diverted into many forms of existence. The self and soul would orient toward desubstantiation by specific way and fully renounce the self or soul in underlying self-identified substance. However, The similarity is a part of what this study intends to present, where it would be presented properly. The human soul of Whitehead to which a technical term of 'living person' refers and human soul of Buddhism, which is generally known as anātman(無我) but could confuse ones due to its literal meaning, are all desubstantiated souls in this respect.
Nevertheless, the more significant point of this study is on some difference between the two thoughts. To the writer's estimation, it might never be reasonable to expect complete accord or simple similarity of the two thoughts. It might never be seen something more than mere chance because each has gone its own historical orbit. The writer would like to verify the estimation in a perspective of personal identity. To the writer's judgement, the Buddhist philosophy heads towards full rejection of person and soul, whereas whitehead points out that relational-qualified personal identity can be possible by overcoming the underlying substantial identity and making clear that the most important element is God.
When the writer takes notice of difference, it is based on the belief that the philosophical dialogue between the East and the West can be implemented in the light of respecting each other truly and then appropriating others' truths. In conclusion, whiteheadian thinkers could seriously consider why Buddhism does not believe in God and renounce personal(or soul) identity. Buddhists, on their part, could understanding experienced reasons why they advocate God and still pursue personal identity. That will be a catalyst for the both to develop their own traditions.
